  • TurboTax successfully lobbied to keep the IRS from offering free tax prep. Now it’s pretending the government already does it. Read more of our reporting on TurboTax here: propub.li/2VoS013

Why is he so pissed? Like right off the bat? I've actually talked to the people from there in the last few years and they were awesome. This guy diminishes the good agents. Like, he doesn't even meet basic decency or professional requirements. He is either lying or thinks he is right, neither is a good look for the company

This is ridiculous. The IRS should never have entered into any agreements not to develop their own software or online filing system.

The Turbo Tax rep has never heard of ProPublica or that there reporting is essentially "investigative". That's what they do: Digging through the lies to report on the truth is their sole reason for existence.

I am a paid tax preparer registered through the IRS (required by law), have previous TurboTax experience (including the automatic price jumps), and was previously employed by H&R Block. I am certain the IRS is "honest about that stuff." In terms of prep/file costs... the IRS has a full webpage providing approved free prep/file sites and the stipulations for each listed. They have no interest in scamming people through tax preparation.

I've used the free filing option TurboTax offers in the past. This year TurboTax was pushing their paid version so hard and making statements to the effect of, "if you don't pay for this we're not going to search for all your tax money, only the paid version really thoroughly works." So I went with H&R block's free filing website, I got a slightly better return with them.

What do you expect when dealing with two horrendous entities (public and private) that are both there to screw you out of your hard earned money. On one side you get massive bureaucracy, inefficiency, overly-complicated rules and process, and on the other side you get price gouging, bad coding, unscrupulous employees and a philosophy that they will easily take your money but make it very difficult to get it back even if they owe it to you. Neither of them are in your best interest.

You're an absolute tool if you're begging a refund - it was a voluntary transaction; you paid for a service and received it. They "hid the free version? Big deal. Would you sue McDonalds because you didn't look hard enough on the menu for a "value meal" or something? The guy even explained on the phone how to get to the free version.
An ill-informed QA guy who's probably not even an Intuit employee doesn't change that you didn't do your due diligence, and then demanded a refund after paying for and receiving a service you contacted for. Myself and tens of thousands of others didn't have an issue filing free last year.
If you're an adult you've spent YEARS clicking "no" on websites, software installation, app marketplaces, etc which are trying to sell your services. The most embarrassing thing about this in my opinion is that you didn't bother to read the pages in front of your face when doing something as important as filing your taxes.
