"One of them told me i should try youth comps" is sooo out of pocket hahaha this was a great video Toby, good to see there are places with proper stupid hard problems out there
This feels like a training arc where the protagonist hears about a far away land where the average person is stronger than their very strongest opponent and goes to experience life there
"A few locals gave me some beta, demonstrating the problem actually wasn't that hard, it was mainly just me. One of them told me to try youth comps, and based on how I was climbing, it was solid advice" Honestly one of the most entertaining climbing videos I have ever watched
I absolutely love this style of video. It's a digital diary. You can be proud of yourself for trying again and again. Not giving up isn't easy, and I'm sure you learned something that will help you continue to grow.
wow, dont thank me for watching. this was probably the most enjoyable climbing video i have ever watched. seeing the process of one of the best indoor climber transition from strength and power training to training on hard boulders, being included in your thoughts, seeing the progression and trying super hard on crazy hard boulders, that is something very unique i have never seen. i truely appreciate the effort you put into that video on top of your strict training regimen. thank you for letting us be a part of your journey. you seem like a humble and chill guy, which makes it even more relatable. i wish you all the best in life and for the upcoming seasons. this video made me root for you :)
I think the best bit about this video was the pacing, showing and explaining a few attempts, then the send attempt from the ground, with music, works really well
I don’t know if there’s anything more motivating in the world than watching this video of constant diligent trial and error and ample failure _after_ seeing Toby grab the gold medal in the Olympic Games. I don’t think so.
So awesome seeing the growth and progression on Japanese boulders. Also really interesting to have the insightful commentary over all the climbing footage. More of this please!!!
To that local Japanese climber, Toby didn't follow your advice to participate the youth competition, but went straight ahead to the Olympics game. By the way, he took the gold medel home 😂
love the honesty in the tone, not hiding frustrations and talking about the badness of the holds as freely as you wish. super relatable and i really love watching you climb/learn from each attempt (: all the best for this season toby!
Really sick video, the commentary and editing made it really entertaining from front to back -- I felt a bit shocked when I realized that all 30min was up when it ended lol
This style is perfection. This is the first video on your channel ive watched and i was hooked. As many others have pointed out, everything from the pacing to the music and the monologues were done amazingly well. Please make more! I know who im rooting for at the Olympics!
So cool to see that after completing the savage slab with one beta, you were able to immediately do the other beta. Seems counterintuitive but it shows how much climbing is about mental commitment. This video is insanely motivating
Definitely refreshing to see how a elite climber can still grow so much during just a trip! Great documentation of everything and relaxing B-rolls of some views in japan😊
Would've loved to see even more of your trip to Japan outside of bouldering! Love the content! It is also comforting to see someone even at your level struggle from time to time and getting back to form after keeping at it.
Thank you for being so real about not feeling your best and having a not so great mindset. It’s reassuring to know that even the best in the world can have bad days or a bad mentality at some point. We know you’re strong and amazing Toby!
The hole video blew my mind. 13:43 just wild! Tops of the black tape at 20:50 and light green at 24:45 were extra special moments. Your heel hooks are just mad👌. Voice over was top-notch.
I feel like there is some comfort watching Toby, a fu*ing olympian struggling with boulders, but at the same time there is no excuse for me for not trying hard enough 😅😅 Thank you Toby for showing your process, and letting us in to see a bigger picture which involves that you fail and get frustrated sometimes.😅
Honestly one of the best climbing videos ive ever seen. ill definetely be looking out for your content from now i enjoyed it a lot! You can see the progression so nicely!
Awesome video Toby, the format was excellent especially with your commentary overlapping and showing some of the travel on the side. Japan is such a beautiful place, and seeing the best climbers in the world getting humbled by bpump makes us mortals that much more confident! It was a pleasure meeting you at Ogikubo mate, was one of the highlights of my trip. All the best at the world cup this year!
Pleasure watching such focused and hard training :D Simple yet effective editing with the grade clarification on each boulder, as it can be hard for viewers who aren't accustomed to the grading in Japanese gyms. Also i liked the chill but informative and insightful commentary, very good video, ty :D
Loved the video format, really cool to see your progression throughout your time in Tokyo!! I get the feeling those black tapes are some of the hardest boulders in the world. Must be an awesome feeling to have so many projects right at your limit
Makes me want to go climb in Tokyo so bad! Hope you got ramen too. great to see the progression on each boulder with commentary, really made me feel how ridiculous some of these problems probably are... hope to see more of this style of content from you for sure! Great video! :D
Aww Toby this was such a great watch, so happy to see you get progressively more comfortable with the routes there ❤️ love this style of video, looking forward to more ☺️ take care and happy Easter!
this was amazing to watch! i love doing climbing as a hobby and this makes me wanna visit japan even more now. thank you for sharing this toby and look forward to seeing you in the paris olympics!
Honestly one of the best climbing videos I watched in a while. All the best for your journey towards the olympics! Gave me some good rout setting inspiration
Love the idea of the video, the fails, the determination to pull through and the insight into the process! Gained yourself a supported for Paris mate, best of luck!
Really enjoyed this video Toby! Excellent storytelling and humour, but also relatable in the feeling of going to a new gym and not immediately getting on with it.
I'm so happy for you that you managed to finish the dynamic black problem at the end, because I'm sure the movement sequence will haunt you for a long long time otherwise!
Excellent video and format Toby - more of this please! In the days of the Instagram flash it's inspiring to see someone of your skill also getting challenged by hard problems and working through them. I saw you at the Rock City training camp on Saturday; having seen this video I can see why the problems Katsu and the team set for the kids' session the following day were so hard, but so subtle and incredible!
Thank you! The boulders he sets are incredible and always great to climb on. There should be some content coming out about the training camp in rock city too. Stay tuned 😆
After long power training I also feel the same, that I don’t have friction, endurance and flow, but after a couple sessions it’s better. Thanks a lot for sharing this part of the training as well! Much appreciated 😁😁 keep up the good work, you’re looking very strong👀💪💪
To get training benefits I think you first have to have a small dip in performance. You just have to trust you’re not just getting weaker which can be hard 🤣

I think your brutal honesty coupled with the talent display makes you a unique watch. Hopefully you enjoy creating this content as much as we do viewing it, you're absolutely killing it.
Sick video! Reminds me of getting shut down whenever I go to new gyms, getting used to the new style, and then coming back home and getting shut down again after forgetting the old style lmfao
Fantastic vlog once again. You are cutting yourself a very distinctive place/tone in the pro climber vlogging sphere, and it's a very interesting one. So thanks.
Amazing video! Thank your for sharing your process in Tokyo, seeing you going from the "elephant-style" to achieve some the hardest boulders of the gym was inspiring.
I've only recently started watching your videos but am immediately wishing more top level athletes across other sports did similar format videos to yours. I find the insight into the training process, the mindset, and the perseverance in the face of constant, humbling, failures to be extremely refreshing. It's quite unique to climbing how countries don't hide their methods and even organise comp simulations! Let's hope this community continues with the comradery, despite climbing becoming an Olympic sport...And I with the new ifsc restrictions and some rumours, maybe it will not survive! (Even if I was cheering for Tomoa, since you and Anraku would have more opportunities! 😅)
thanks for the video toby. bpump was such a nice gym to go to and experience when I was in japan. Making me wish I was back there. Japan routesetting is exceptional (if not sandbagged), almost every boulder I tried was 5 out of 5 stars.
Hey, thanks for watching. Please let me know if you like this style of video? 😊
Yes!
I love it
Totally awesome!
I enjoy it.
Yes! Definitely a good vibe, some voiceover over some climbing, and learning the bits of what makes bouldering in japan and in these gyms special!

Savage 😂😂
I was humbled 😂
@@TobyClimbingand the man said “based on how I was climbing it was solid advice”. At least you got that English dry humor! 😜
And now toby has the gold medal, what this guy's face look when he know that? Haha
Funny looking how he won the Olympics now lol
imagine being them guys giving the advice to do a youth comp and then seeing this guy win the olympics lol
