von Steuben despite being abrubtly discharged from the Prussian army as a Captain and then not being entirely truthful about his past to Washington, is considered one of the fathers of the US army. His contributions to drill and military regulations are still the basis for many US army regulations today.
Notably the modern drilling technique he taught the continental army instilled staying power and a sense of élan when attacking, which was sorely missing in previous battles.
Dude spent a total of 23 years in 2 different militaries, absolute legend. Also was taught directly by Frederick the Great.

Valley Forge currently is a very nice place to visit. Along with its historical background there is a bike trail, a beautiful monument, and green meadows. I even spotted a fox at the field Steuben trained the soldiers.

Charles Lee also talked enough smack about Washington after the battle that two of Washington’s lieutenants, John Laurens and Alexander Hamilton, decided to duel him, at which point Lee was shot but survived.

My 6th great-grandfather endured the winter at Valley Forge and then fought at Monmouth Courthouse. That was the last of the major engagements he was in, after he was at the siege of Boston, the tail end of the Quebec campaign, Trenton, Princeton, and Saratoga. His grear-great-grandson wrote down what little his grandmother told him about her grandfather’s memories of Valley Forge, including his observations of Washington there. He had enlisted in the 2nd New Hampshire Regiment a day after Bunker Hill.

I have an ancestor who I am pretty sure was a Hessian soldier for the British. He was captured by the Americans, and chose to desert rather than return home after the war.
I don’t know the details, except that he is buried in Pennsylvania. He may have been captured at one of the battles in this video, but I don’t know for certain.

This is an absolutely fantastic series. Looking forward to the rest. I'm hoping you'll do a video on the fighting between the French and the English down in the Caribbean so we can see why d'Etang kept jerking Washington around for 2 years before finally showing up at Yorktown. From the American perspective, it's only peripherally related, but from the European perspective, The Islands were the far more important theater.

Will you be doing a video on the Battle of Wyoming aka the Wyoming massacre and its an event in the revolutionary war that I know very little about and the only things I really know is that it triggered false rumors of a widespread massacre of women and children and these rumors helped to start and encourage a mass evacuation known as the big runaway which saw the American evacuation of the West Branch Susquehanna Valley however the Wyoming massacre also led to an event known as the Sullivan expedition.

Von Steuben not only misrepresented himself, he had not been anywhere near a general's rank, but instead he was a mere captain. And he's been drummed out of the Prussian Army.
Why? Well... uh... ya see... well... Dang! Truth is he's been caught in a homosexual affair, damn it! Yeah, I'm talking about the drill master often called "The Father of the American Army.
Now I'm a disabled veteran and I'm proud of my service in the badass USA Army. But the best war machine in history's daddy was gay!🤣
But his contributions were badly needed by the Continentals and he delivered on his word. So how did one man train thousands? First he inspected the ranks and drew from them the best and brightest troops, a small number about platoon size. These men he trained personally until they thoroughly got his lessons. Then they trained the rest of the troops.
