In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about india’s master spy RN Kao and how under his leadership RAW formulated a plan to make Sikkim a part of India. Till 1975 Sikkim was a protectorate of india means India handled the foreign relations and Defence of Sikkim. The Chugyal leader of Sikkim, Palden Thondup Namgyal, was keen to get Sikkim as a separate state similar to Bhutan. In 1972 Indira Gandhi gave RAW the task to formulate a plan to make Sikkim a part of India. The Sikkim National Congress party leader Kazi Lhendup Dorjee shore up a pro India movement in Sikkim. Which resulted in Sikkim becoming the 22nd state of India in 1975 after referendum. Watch complete episode to know more

But those ethnic Nepalese not all but most of them are inclined towards Nepal. Who are themselves fairly recent immigrants in the state of Sikkim.
@Anonymous nope before merged in India 80% population were ethnic Nepalese, they have Sikkim subject certificate issued by King of Sikkim, Sikkim is protected by artical 371F of Indian constitution, no other citizens of India can acquire Sikkim domicile. Sikkim Domicile issued on the basis of Sikkim Subject only.
@@taraneopaney5255 However, these are recent migrations. Sikkim was in a shortage of labour, so a large number of workers were imported from Nepal. Then their numbers grew exponentially. They changed demography of the state within a few years. There's whole data available about their migrations. They tried to do same in Bhutan but king of Bhutan was wise enough to throw them out.

Sikkim's king at that time had firm believe that India would not back stab and held the respected sandhi, but because of indira's clever and cunning plot against small kingdom and was successful to annexed.
I was born in my own country called Sikkim. Proud to be Sikkimese. Can’t do much just watching the history. Will wait till 2027 to de-classify the secret of Mr Kao
Should thank God. Had India not merged Sikkim in the Indian union, China would have gobbled it up.
There was a big big conspiracy in which a pre-assessment was done to find out people's mentality. More than 70% of the people wanted to be a democratic country. These people were never allowed to vote as they would vote against Dorje Lendup because they knew that he would be fooled by India and India would take over Sikkim.
Sikkim National Congress was convinced that India is going to help them to bring democracy.
Palace was attacked and King was safely taken by a helicopter to Indian Embassy from where he was taken to New Delhi. He had only two options - he will be send back to Sikkim or he has to sign papers that he merges his country in India. Same thing was done with Hari Singh.
Another truth is that this conspiracy was framed by RAW as they were of the opinion that Sikkim could be taken over by China as it was once called South Tibet and considered part of Tibet, although Sikkim never agreed upon it and another thing is that it was strategically important to India coz if China takes over then India could be in danger.
IG had no clue about it until she was told that Sikkim is willing to merge in India.
Better to be in India as we share our culture and a lot.

Nehru built India from scratch. To stop famine and flood he built many Dams on rivers that produced hydroelectricity. Fertilizer, steel and cement plants were built. Cement was a rare commodity those days. He built IITs, IIMs, ISRO, AIIMS and public sector to produce Tractors, watches, cloth, thermal power, petrol etc. Upgraded Tank and heavy vehicle manufacturing factory at Avadi.

Books like " SMASH AND GRAB " written by Sunnanda K Dutta and " SIKKIM , REQUIEM FOR A HIMALAYAN KINGDOM " written by Andrew Duff and other local book like History of Sikkim throws enormous light on how a tiny Himalayan kingdom Sikkim acceded to Bharat .
The imprisonment of former CM Narbahadur Bhandari , Captain Yongda , B. Subba by CRPF and sending them to distant jail in Bengal also throws light on this subject.

@Thelallantop wanted to add that those Sikkim Guards soldiers were given the option to remain in Sikkim or join Indian forces with better prospects. Many of them joined BSF and other para forces and retired. This fact becomes important when trying to understand why people in Sikkim today have strong Indian nationalist feelings.
