The "arrow on the tilt" is the radiator water temperature gauge which is fitted to the radiator cap. Once the engine is up to normal running temperature the arrow will sit in the middle of the glass housing, pointing directly upwards. If it starts to overheat the arrow will point towards the driver's side of the car. It's easily seen from the driver's seat. :-)
They used to call them calorimeters - nothing new about aftermarket accessories!

No it was a side valve with a single SU carb and electric pump. I had one also.
It came as a two door or a four door with a slightly longer wheelbase. The four door had suicide rear doors.
