  • I decided to teach a newbie (my granddaughter) how to apply mesh tape. I think she does a pretty good job, but teaching her could be useful for others.

    Thank you. For the hints. VERY HELPFUL Also, very nice touch having you talk your granddaughter through it. It would have been extra helpful if you would have then talked her through the mudding as well. 👌😀

    I drywalled a 1 and 1/2 story 3 car garage in 2006. I used mesh tape with all purpose pre-mixed mud. It didn't know enough to mix/thin the mud, I just used it straight out of the bucket. I also used finishing mud again straight out of the bucket. I have seen a lot videos saying only use paper tape on new construction. I'm planning on building a house sometime in the future. I'm tempted to do the drywall the same way, I looked over the drywall yesterday and only saw 2 or three small cracks, I probably easily could cover them with a quick coat of paint. Do you think mesh is a good way to do new construction?

      Thanks so much for the question. I have finished a lot of drywall in new construction with mesh tape on all of the flats. But I ALWAYS used quickset mud on the bed coat. Using only all purpose on the bed coat is risky for the long term stability of the joints. After the thin bed coat with quickset is applied then you can use all purpose or a topping to finish up.

    Why do most people, even pros refrain from using mesh tape to do entire taping?? They always say it's not durable enough and will Crack. What are your thoughts? I'm planning on retaping my garage ceiling and I'm not sure which to use. NOTE: This is my first time taping, however, I'm not looking for the easier way. I want this to be done right and hopefully never have to worry about it again for another 30 years.

      Hey Sky Hawk. Thanks so much for the comment. 1. As a pro that has done millions of square feet of drywall I will tell you that we have used Mesh tape to do all the flats on hundreds of projects. We don’t use it for the corners or angles. Also we were very careful to use ONLY quickset mud on the bed coat. If you use regular mud it will crack. Quickset dries extremely hard and solves the cracking issue. Once the mesh is bedded in quickset you can coat it with a coating mud. I do have a video that shows what I did on a ceiling. Look in my playlist for drywall.

    U just have to use fast setting joint compound mud it even says so on manufactures webpage otherwise all purpose mud or other muds that's not fast setting it will cause cracks

    • @homerehabpros9617
      @homerehabpros9617  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely Jacobb. ONLY use quick set mud to bed the mesh tape. Your finish coats can be an All Purpose or Lite Weight mud

      Mesh tape can shed strings off the edge. Cutting minimizes that issue.

      @homerehabpros9617  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment Ron. I would recommend durabond 90 for most homeowners doing there own repairs. It just gives them more time to work with it and still get the advantage of a quickset material. Used to be I would use durabond 300 (yup that was 300) when I had really big jobs.

      Hey Frank, I am sorry that you had that issue. I have used mesh tape with quickset for decades without a problem. With that being said cracks in drywall are a common problem no matter what tape you use. If your mesh tape formed a hairline crack down the middle of the joint it is probably because of the Joint Compound used. This is the most common mistake people make. If you used quickset mud and it did that then I would suspect that there are other issues involved.
