Prince met Sheila around 1978 when she was playing with The George Duke Band. She started collaborating with Prince in 1983 and toured with him from 1984 thru 1989. I suggest you watch Prince’s concert movie from 1987 “Sign O The Times”. Her drum solo in the movie is ridiculous. During this time she release two albums. Prince wrote her two biggest singles Glamorous Life and Love Bizarre. Prince & Sheila were very close. He also proposed to her while on the Lovesexy tour in 88/89.
Prince was a Sheila E fan before the met in the late 70s / early 80s. They started playing together and ended up doing music for Sheila’s solo career. In the late 80s, Sheila played drums for Prince on the Sign O the Times and Lovesexy tours. They were engaged for a brief time but remained friends. He continued to invite her to perform at awards shows and shows during his tours. She is known as the Queen of Percussion.
I went to a Prince concert at Madison Square Garden, and during one of his breaks, Sheila E came out and performed this song and absolutely killed it. She got a bigger ovation from the crowd than Prince himself. I remember her going crazy on the drums; she kept breaking sticks and pulling extras out of the holder, and never missed a beat. To outshine Prince at his own show is a real feat!
I LOVE Prince so much. Sheila is one badass drummer/percussionist. Prince met her in 1977 after a concert that she was performing with her father. They collaborated in music and did end up having a romantic relationship, but later broke up and kept it professional. Sheila comes from a very long line of Latin musicians. Her father, uncle, brother, and some of her cousins are all very talented musicians. This song was written by Prince but they both produced it.
Sheila E played in a band since she was young with her family for years. Prince came later in her life and asked if she would play with his band. You can see her play with her family in the movie KRUSH GROOVE. She was more of a special feature while playing with Prince due to being in a band of her own. Basically when he called she showed up for gigs.
She was one of his many proteges back in the day. For a while, she couldn't play or perform anymore because of some back issues. This isn't the whole song. If you haven't heard the whole thing, I highly recommend listening to it.
Prince is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. One of the greatest, possibly THE greatest artist of all time. I highly recommend "I could never take the place of you man" from the "Sign o' the Times" movie. The greatest performance ever record,.
PS I love your expression when Prince threw his guitar 😂. Prince was throwing guitars alot during a 3 to 4 year stretch (his version of dropping the mic) like he did on "while my guitar gently weeps".
I forgot which time. But one of those times he borrowed someone's guitar to perform and of course he tossed and broke the guitar. A rare expensive one which the guy said Prince didn't tell him or asked if it was ok. He did pay the guy for it but he still was some what annoyed by it.
Sheila E. and Prince have had a long relationship. It has been professional and personal. They were engaged for a while. She has played drums or percussion on several different tours with him. Sheila has played percussion for Carlos Santana, Lionel Ritchie, and many more big names. Sheila recorded The Glamorous Life but Prince wrote it.
Prince writes all the music for Shelia both her records were written by Prince She toured with him and NPG keep playing the Prince reactions I have seen him many times live and it is a party. Please if you could react I Wanna be your lover
They was engaged once upon a time....Prince knew her since 1978,she was in Lionel Ritchie band with her siblings, and a true fact Nicole Ritchie is her niece...her brother Peter Michael is Nicole Ritchie biological father.
After Prince saw her preform with her father he invited her to be a part of his band. He jokingly told her he was arguing with his bassist about which of them were going to marry her
You gotta watch that full performance and the award introduction before it. They show the then senator Barack Obama jamming out to DMSR in the audience too. And Prince’s vocals on Satisfied and bass solo on The Jam are too fire. Oh, and Mr. Takumi Seutsugu caught the guitar. They had that trick down like a football play. He would run through and catch it mid-run and just keep going. It’s funny to see the facial expressions of the people in the front row when they turn the camera towards the audience…and the way they are looking over towards the direction Takumi disappeared into. 😂😂😂🔥🔥🙌🏼
Prince new how to pick 'em. Shiela E is multi-talented and gorgeous. I know Prince wrote most of her stuff, and produced some of it as well. Were they "involved"? I've no idea, and that's wild. Maybe it was just pre-internet.
Prince wrote the lyrics and music 😅for Sheila E. She was a percussionist when they met. Prince convinced her she could be a singer/performer in her own right. He was right.
They were the best of friends for a long time, I think they should've got together in my opinion 😅 watch her in "Sign O the Times" you will love her fashion, Prince's too.
Shelia is singer song from her first albums. Prince wrote their all the songs on her first 3 albums. She was a a drummer with her family before Prince gave her a solo career. Prince and Sheila er once engaged but never got marred. Prince throw his guitar to his guitar tech that tunes it for him.
Prince talked Sheila into singing and wrote most of her songs including her 2 biggest hits and she toured with him playing in his band. Of course they dated but Prince dated everyone, lol. He loved working with women and always gave them opportunities. I'm sure she misses him more than most. They had great musical chemistry. People loved Prince on the guitar but I loved him playing piano. You should react to Prince piano medley 1988.
A few things: 1) This performance is a clip from the medley of songs performed by O(+> himself, Sheila, Morris Day, and others when "His Royal Badness" was accepting his NAACP Award. There's a whole video on that. 2) Sheila's father was a member of legendary group Santana. The last name stands for Escavido (sp?). 3) Along with touring with "His Purple Majesty" during the "Purple Rain" tour and being the opening act (along with playing in his band after the break), she and many Def Jam artists starred in the movie "Krush Groove". You might want to look up that movie. It's loosely based on getting Def Jam off the ground (under the pseudonym "Krush Groove"). I hope you're doing well and I hope you'll enjoy the following Clean Joke. A guy walks into a library and walks up to the desk. The Librarian says "Can I help you?" (and then he whispers) "i'd like a ham on rye with spicy mustard and a large dr. pepper".
Her father and brothers are all drummers. Her uncle Alejandro leads a rock band just to be different. The Escovedo family is a major force in west coast music.
Literally everything you said is correct but did you know that Karen Carpenter was also a drummer, and a very good drummer indeed. There are a couple of videos on TH-cam featuring her drumming.
Her first two hits were featured in the movie, Krush Groove. It's one of my favorite "guilty pleasure" movies. Prince and Sheila did kinda have a personal relationship but after the break up she continued to have a professional relationship. Prince gave a lot of songs to female performers back then as well as mentoring them. Sheila's dad was a world renouned percussionist as well.
If I remember correctly, their dads played together when they were kids. Later, he recruited her because he was letting the Revolution go (except for Dr. Fink) and knew of her amazing ability. This is all from memory, but you can see them play together in the Prince "Sign O' The Times" concert movie. And, yes, at one point, she takes over the mic and sings while Prince plays the drums.
Just watch 'Sign o the times' concert vidro from 1987 then you'll see they collaborated back then. She is a drummer first as her father is a percussionist/drummer too. Prince and Sheila were apparently engaged for a period of time. They collaborated from about 1984 up until his passing.
They was lovers. He discovered her as a soloist and wrote a lot of songs on her first album. She looked up to him a lot even dressed like him. Great chemistry
Prince probably wrote songs for her. He wrote songs for many artists; he was a prolific writer who gave many artists number one hits. I can’t recall them all at the moment but Manic Monday was written by Prince, as one example.
Sheila E is an incredible percussionist. She learned from her father as a young girl. She learned by mirroring him. There's a great documentary:The Essential Sheila E. She tells of her musical roots.
Sheila comes from a huge musical family originally from Mexico. Two of her brothers, Pete and Coke Escovito both had long musical careers. Pete had a Latin Jazz orchestra, and Coke was percussionist in many bands. He was in the original Santana Band. Sheila has a nephew about the same age as her named Alejandro, who began playing in punk bands in the 70's, has had a huge career in rock, country, and Americana. Sheila and Prince were a thing. Almost got married.
Sheila version is the same version that’s on the prince originals release with Prince lead vocals taken out and replace with Sheila’s and backing vocals added and Sheila’s drum solo added . obviously.
Prince did the same for his performance at the rock and roll hall of fame for George Harrison. That should be your next prince video. Even George's son was in aww of prince you can see it on his face
Hey, Britt, l don't know if anyone has told you that there are two Sheilas. Sheila E. Is the drummer. Sheila Easton is a singer. Both had songs written by Prince.

Sheila also sings (uncredited) with Prince on the classic and infamous "Erotic City". But in the song, she isn't saying the word it sounds like she's saying. She agreed to do it only if she could say "funk" instead of the _other_ word, cause she's a classy Lady. [But yeah, Prince is saying exactly what it sounds like.]
She is a legendary PERCUSSIONIST! Legendary.
"The Glamorous Life" is a song written by Prince, recorded by Sheila E. and produced by both.
Prince and Sheila E go together like peanut butter and jelly. Amazing.
Please look for "The Glamorous Life" sung by Prince solo. It's pretty awesome!
You should listen to the entire song.

You should check their performance for the alma awards in 2007
Sheila played for him for decades, including tours. That is a Prince song. He essentially wrote all here records, but she is a powerhiyse by herself.
Her dad Pete was a famous Latin jazz percussionist as well.
He still is… the Escevedo family just celebrated Pops birthday (88)& Sheila has a new single out & at 66 she’s still going strong 🙌🏾❤️🎶

Yes! She should react to the tribute that Sheila E did to Prince (after his death) on I believe the BET awards? It was fantastic!
The finale is a hommage to Carlos Santana, one ofthe influences of Prince
They also had a personal relationship in the early 80’s. Yes she is amazing! I was her drum tech.

I saw her perform this song live at the Dell in Philadelphia in 2016 and it made me so happy I cried.
