The Regal Ancestor Spirt is one of my favorite Fromsoft bosses period. It’s breathtaking design, it’s phenomenal soundtrack, beautiful arena, it’s awesome moveset that uses the abilities of other animals like Rabbits and Armadillos make this boss absolutely amazing to me. I know people complain that it’s too easy, but for me a boss doesn’t need to be hard to be awesome (Divine Dragon, Abyss Watchers, etc)
I LOVE it cuz its design reminds me of the movie "the ritual" with that Windigos design in the movie. Something I can easily see the artists behind fromsoft designing too
First time I encountered this boss I was doing a totally-blind playthrough and the whole experience was so surreal I couldn't bring myself to straight-up fight for what felt like forever. I had the exceptional fortune to be wearing a really decent set of headphones and the surround sound effects were something else. This OST instantly shot to the top of my list for the game, though honestly the Elden Beast gives it a hard run for it's money for an actual #1 placement.
From the little the game says in text about this it seems like this is a boss related to the crucible. It even has attacks of different animals. Even the horns of the Ancestral Followers hint at it. So this is the closest to a crucible boss other than the crucible knights (some even use horns similar to this bosses and you can get a crucible horn incantation).
I think its more accurate that the Ancestral Spirit is just that, some kind of missing link/ancestor. It's stated that even humans are simply distant relatives which is why theyre able to draw on that power, so not so much that this creature would be in the Crucible itself, but that it's just an example of the kind of creature that the Crucible Knights base their power from. Maybe something akin to bullfighting could have happened in the Crucible to let them take that power, but it's not stated that Ancestral Spirits were even anywhere near the crucible.
@@Calex55KH Oh I was just going off the budding horn and the descriptions of the Spirits Rememberence items. As the budding horn references the deer and the Crucible. And its the Spirit of the Ancestor of Sheep, Deer, and other Animals. The other 2 aspects of the crucible animals you fight are descendents being dragons, and the basilisk. The basilisk don't breath fire anymore as they have been infected by the deathblight.
The Crucible is basically Ancient Norse Mythology. And when the Greater will eradicated it, its a mirror to how Christianity eradicated the Norse faith. Like how the greater will corrupted the Great tree into the Erdtree.
It's a spirit that represents the primordial world of the Lands Between before the Elden Beast arrived to impose the Greater Will. Along with Demi-Humans and the Bats, it was displaced by the invading force and that's probably why the Followers worship it and are openly hostile to people from above that worship the Erdtree. It's hypothesis of course.
The way this boss fight was designed I almost thought it was going to drop some kind of upgrade to Torrent. The fact that it seems to be a similar deer like creature and the fact it uses the same double jump as Torrent as well.
Or Druidic, which is probably where some of the song's influences come from. The Vikings and Druids often used nut shells tied together as a way to deepen trances during rituals. I wouldn't be too surprised if the Natives of the America's did the same
The aesthetic of Ancestral follower and Ancestral spirit kinda blend Native American theme and Druidic theme together. Ancestral spirit look like wendigo but being a deer it's kinda reminds me of one of the Celtics god (or folktale beast)
It doesn't necessarily look decayed or undead to me. To me it looks specifically like it was gutted. Like something tore out its lower half. Maybe the Regal Ancestor Spirit used to look quite a bit more regal indeed
It's been skinned and gutted, it's been part of the "hunt". But whether that was honorable or profaned isn't entirely clear. It's slaying could have been a great crime against the law of nature or it could be stirring now only because nature has been forgotten, since everyone moved on with their gods and orders long ago and forgot these roots. The battle is the revelation that this is all still here, even if it was left behind and forgotten, it still commands respect. You get that understanding during the fight, even in the music.
This boss was one of the most unique boss fights I have ever experienced. When I walked in, I was cautious but ready, yet when the music started, it completely changed my mood. I didn't feel any dread, any fear, or any hostility towards it. It.... calmed me. Like it just wanted me to simply watch, and take in the atmosphere. It felt genuinely surreal, and no other boss in the souls series has ever achieved that for me. 10/10 my god, what a game.
I don't know if we're getting DLC anytime soon, but I certainly would love to see one of these in their prime - even half-rotten and falling apart, they're so majestic...
There's so many open ways for DLCs and sequels : between all the outer gods, the dragons, the crucible, the three fingers, the divine will, ranni, miquella... And even extend the underground, there's still plenty of room for it.
This is one of the few fights in the game where I was conflicted after beating it, on the one hand it's clearly a creature that once had a more dignified past with it all being withered and decayed a bit so maybe we ended some of it's suffering but on the other it's clearly something that wasn't hostile by nature, we intruded on it's sacred grounds and killed it and with it the spirit animals that lived alongside it also died. I wonder if it's current state has something to do with the theory that the Erdtree is a parasitic being and it's slowly sapped the life and nature that once existed before it came along.
Never heard of that theory but it seems to me like the most straightforward interpretation is quite literally the opposite, the erd tree is decaying and since it's the incarnation of life, life perishes.
This is 10/10 the type of Boss with the most different feel to it for sure. We are clearly the one who does not belong here and the invader and the villain. *_"Holyhorn Land"_* felt like breaking into a sacred dimension and messing it up just for greed like a damn poacher would. Well... _" For the loot !!"_ I guess.
Something I hadn't caught before was that while it's obviously a corpse, the fact that it looks like it's been cleaned really ties it all together with the themes of life, death, and rebirth. Obviously the Ancestral Followers revere this thing, but likely ritualistically hunt and harvest it too. I can draw a lot of parallels to pre-Christian Finnic, Siberian, and Ainu practices (which is where I think a lot of the Ancestral Followers motifs came from)
The coolest boss in the game. Some fights don’t have to be super difficult to be enjoyable. The atmosphere, the music, the process to find the ancestor spirit was perfect
Does anyone know why most of giant enemies (troll, dragonkin, drmi human queen, and ancestral spirit) have no innards, and feels like they've been gutted?
I thought it was something to do with their God. I think they call it the fell God or something. The Golden Order fought it and ripped its existence out from everyone. Except the fire giant boss. You can see it wake up half way through the fight.

The trolls never worshipped it, and actually fought against it during the war, the Dragonkin Soldiers and Ancestral Spirit are objects of faith in and of themselves, and the Demihuman queens are associated with glintstone more than anything. Fromsoft just really likes making enemies that have had their guts removed, even if there isn't a clear reason why.
Maybe it is because the vessel is immortal. But the innards have corroded and fallen out over time- Reflecting the idea that immortality is not as pleasing as we might think.

It's like a mix between a bloodborne and sekiro boss, it's got a sort of folklore and magical style to it like the beast bosses you find in fountainhead palace from sekiro but it's also bloody and seems to have been gutted and it's skin is sagging, similair to that of a cleric beast.
I noticed a different form of themes in Elden ring with the ancestor Spirit the worshipers and overall a world more in tune with nature then any of the other fromsoftware games
Well it mostly the denizens of the underground cities that practice ancestors/nature worship. The erdtree isn’t exactly a natural phenomenon and represents order as opposed to nature.
This song alone made me regret not purchasing the deluxe edition on Steam for the soundtrack. It's just enthralling, haunting and so sad, adding so much to an already spectacularly beautiful and entertaining boss.
When I first found the weaker version of this boss 2 days after release, I immediately left out of fear of thinking it was way out of my level and second that seeing it from a distance was terrifying
It’s crazy how this creature design feels so villainous on its own but with the framing of the fight and the music it recontextualizes it as a duel with a long-dead creature of great religious and cultural significance to a whole group of people. It might not be the most mechanically challenging fight in the game, but it’s one of the most stunning fights from has ever made.
Elden Ring has a lot of enemies with open/hollow abdomens and torsos. Trolls, revenants, Radagon/Marika (to an extent), the Ancestor Spirits, Dragonkin Soldiers, and a few other enemies have some sort of hollowness to their torso. This might be a nod to Hollowing from the Souls series, or it might have something to do with a separate theme or focus of Elden Ring. I'm not sure what it means, but it's an cool detail and an interesting design focus.
I looked at the Old Lord's Talismen the other day and realized its him. And you see he used to have 4 heads?!?! Would love that close up abd maybe DLC of facing him in his prime
I believe what we are fighting here isn’t necessarily the actual spirit, but a vessel for the spirit itself, I think the “vessel” was actually a large beast that was used for a ritual to pay homage to the spirit by the deer people who inhabit the area(I haven’t bothered looking up what they’re called), hence the reason it looks gutted since its organs were used in the ritual. Then the body was left in what the deer people considered sacred to their spirit in hopes of that the spirit would possess the body to reach out to them. it most likely did and thats why the bodies were left there, but then you summoned it, and you were different, someone that could change the world’s fate and it saw it. It wanted to test you, see if you were worthy of it’s blessings… So it brought you to it’s world. Then you both dueled until your last, with it watching your every step, you both danced in the spirit’s mist as try prove yourself to it. Eventually you prevail, showing the spirit you are indeed the one to change the world’s fate, it leaves it’s blessing to you and then discards it’s vessel one last time. Now the spirit watches from above, waiting to see what fate you had planned for the world it struggles to help maintain.
These videos are wonderful. It's surprising how many details we miss when fighting these bosses. Can you please kindly do the Royal Revenant next? It seems like such a cool and creepy design. So much going on but can seem to put my finger on how the character is pieced together. Thanks
they are both spirits of horse/deer like animals connected to magic,the only 2 true differences are 1.torrent is very healty and not half rotten/gutted and 2 torrent seems to be linked to the spirit bell, i think torrent is more like a pokemon while the Ancestor spirit like a legendary type
Moose, the horned deer.. The animal was worshiped as a guaridan of land for Native americans(it is not indian-Indo people). As you listen some special music players, this music composer may be impressed native american's music players. I can hear some traditional players too. Native american Castanets and low tone Quenacho flute... what a nice...
This is an undead creature. Much like the Trolls that wander the land. Cursed to wander in suffering. The Troll blacksmith is one of the few that retain their wits and skill.
I wonder if the ancestor spirit's state has something to do with it refusing to die. Kind of like how placidusax is missing a head among other things. Like the golden order was fighting to bring the beast to it's death but it persisted with the help of it's followers. Similarly to how placidusax stopped time to prevent his own death.
Looks like it was gutted a long time ago. Its remains appear to have zombified as its soul kept it going. My theory is it was a kind of nature guardian. A supernatural creature like the Lord of the Mountain in BOTW. A hunter, either god or mortal, killed it for glory. Now it is a vengeful creature pointing its rage towards any living thing that comes near it. Only through its defeat can it find rest.
Is there any difference between the Regal Ancestor Spirit and the Ancestor Spirit, Im not even sure why they used this boss twice, kinda sours the spectacle and majesty of it all.
he's definitely more majestic underground. also, based on this look, it seems like its underside was cut open, and possible harvested for its meat or organs or something. idk I'm no anatomy expert, but that's what it looks like to me. I wonder if its followers are responsible for that, something else, or if it's just like that.
Fighting him has a very similar feeling when beating lady Maria, it's like releasing them from all this pain and suffering, and hoping they could pass on instead of dwelling in this wretched rotten form.
alright 4am crack theory i just thought up and also spoilers, so theres this theory that the erdtree was parasitized by the elden beast/golden order, plus we know that souls travel back to the erdtree to be reborn again as destined death is sealed away. assuming this is true the erdtree may have sprouted through souls and it has sprouted before the golden order thus making it beyond the purview of the golden order just like regal ancestor spirit, this could be possible because miquella created his own tree by merging with it and sustaining its growth on top of being independent of the golden order. now heres the theory, what if the regal ancestor spirit isnt the deer, but is the branches/antlers sticking out of it and that it could be an erdtree sprout feeding off of the dead deer thing and the souls of other animals as you see it do in its second fight.

This is my favorite boss in the game. Such an inconsequential encounter- no huge lore stakes, no fanfare, just an atmospheric boss with great music.

I agree, he wouldn't look out of place at Fountainhead Palace. He reminds me a lot of the Sakura Bull.

The first spirit is hands down my favorite fight so far then Regal came along and glitched itself to death....I still count it as a win.

Interesting thing I noticed is that the spirit has a very similar jumping ability and sound like torrent does. Maybe they're related?
they are both spirits of horse/deer like animals connected to magic,the only 2 true differences are 1.torrent is very healty and not half rotten/gutted and 2 torrent seems to be linked to the spirit bell, i think torrent is more like a pokemon while the Ancestor spirit like a legendary type

This is an undead creature. Much like the Trolls that wander the land. Cursed to wander in suffering. The Troll blacksmith is one of the few that retain their wits and skill.
I wonder if the ancestor spirit's state has something to do with it refusing to die. Kind of like how placidusax is missing a head among other things. Like the golden order was fighting to bring the beast to it's death but it persisted with the help of it's followers. Similarly to how placidusax stopped time to prevent his own death.
Aaaaaaaand now I feel bad... I will never kill that beautiful creature again I promise 😭
Tbh when i saw this boss it’s remind me of forest’s spirit god who has appearance as a dear in ghlibi studio’s princess Mononoke
My Deer Friend Regal Ancestor Spirit
Even the regular ancestor spirit was in my top five remembrance bosses, but the regal one is easily top 3
Looks like it was gutted a long time ago. Its remains appear to have zombified as its soul kept it going.
My theory is it was a kind of nature guardian. A supernatural creature like the Lord of the Mountain in BOTW. A hunter, either god or mortal, killed it for glory. Now it is a vengeful creature pointing its rage towards any living thing that comes near it. Only through its defeat can it find rest.
Looks like the emasticated deer from Dark Souls 3 got work in Elden Ring, good for him.

Is there any difference between the Regal Ancestor Spirit and the Ancestor Spirit, Im not even sure why they used this boss twice, kinda sours the spectacle and majesty of it all.

I think this is an unused Sekiro Boss, he has a lot of the vibe of being a Sekiro Boss.
I fought the regal one. forgot to fight this one. came back later on with Giantsflame Take Thee and melted it
he's definitely more majestic underground.
also, based on this look, it seems like its underside was cut open, and possible harvested for its meat or organs or something. idk I'm no anatomy expert, but that's what it looks like to me. I wonder if its followers are responsible for that, something else, or if it's just like that.

Fighting him has a very similar feeling when beating lady Maria, it's like releasing them from all this pain and suffering, and hoping they could pass on instead of dwelling in this wretched rotten form.

alright 4am crack theory i just thought up and also spoilers, so theres this theory that the erdtree was parasitized by the elden beast/golden order, plus we know that souls travel back to the erdtree to be reborn again as destined death is sealed away. assuming this is true the erdtree may have sprouted through souls and it has sprouted before the golden order thus making it beyond the purview of the golden order just like regal ancestor spirit, this could be possible because miquella created his own tree by merging with it and sustaining its growth on top of being independent of the golden order. now heres the theory, what if the regal ancestor spirit isnt the deer, but is the branches/antlers sticking out of it and that it could be an erdtree sprout feeding off of the dead deer thing and the souls of other animals as you see it do in its second fight.
