    1:26 Chef tip: Place a wet towel (paper or otherwise) beneath your cutting board to keep it from moving around while you're using a sharp knife.

      I use rubbery drawer lining material from the Dollar store. Also works great for opening stubborn jars!!

    I triple render mine in the crock pot with water and salt when I'm using it for my skin. I'm 51 and have been animal based for a year and a half and have only used tallow on my face to wash and moisturize. Great video. You're amazing. 🩷🥩

    • @tammiehammett5054
      @tammiehammett5054 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@zibatool5213 The salt doesn't go into the Tallow but that combined with the water helps draw impurities out of the Tallow which can be poured out with the water or as I do, scrape the bottom of the hardened Tallow between each rendering to scrape off more impurities. That makes sense.

    Thanks for showing a simplified way to make tallow. I have a very simple way to make tallow myself. Very similar to this video except I do add water to the fat. Adding water prevents it from burning and does remove some impurities.

    Thanks for the tip of using the immersion blender when the fat Cooks down to get the most out of it I cut it in small pieces ended up cooking it for an hour all together but using that immersion blender after about 30 minutes or so really broke it down to get the most out of it. Worked perfectly

    Pro tip: i add 1.5 cups of water per 1kg of fat, it prevents it from burning. The water will evaporate by the time the fat is rendered

      I think thats what she means by over complicating it, dont think it really needs water we had like 10 pounds of beef fat cooking for like 2 days now at 170-200 in the oven it browns when it renders but doesn’t burn unless its way too hot had it in the smoker too at 250

    • @captaincaveman8729
      @captaincaveman8729 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@evanmitchell2188 Adding water is not complicated, it actually helps to make the process less complicated and foolproof, you can even crank up the heat with the presence of the water, the water will keep the temperature stable at boiling point and speed up the rendering, 8-10hrs down to about 3-4hrs

    Ive been wondering about tallow.
    The price of tallow soap is astronomical.
    I put some duck fat on my skin and it absorbed it instantly….makes sense.
    We are not plants, we are part of the animal world.
    I’m a bit worried I might smell like ….dinner though.

      It works really well for skincare. Clara & Fritz doesn’t smell beefy at all. If it’s rendered/purified properly it has a neutral smell. :)

      I whip our tallow until it’s a bit foamy then scoop it into wide neck jars. My wife and I both use it and as Rach said, there’s no smell, but also mmm nothing wrong with smelling like dinner - dinner smells lovely :-) also in 🇦🇺

    When you grind meat you want to cube it small, and put it in the freezer. Also put the grinder attachment in the freezer. You want everything cold. When the meat/fat is kind of crunchy feeling, it will grind easier. You don’t want it rock hard, though.

  • @jasunto

    I just started doing it with my air fryer drip tray from ground beef drippings. Weird that it is slightly yellow. When I buy the tub on Amazon it is pure white. I think it is because they filtered everything out of it completely.

    • @peter-robinson
      @peter-robinson ปีที่แล้ว +4

      this is also because Tallow is made from suet, the hard fat around the kidneys and it is very white. We get ground suet from our butcher. We also get the fat they trim off all the meat cuts and when I render that, it comes out more yellow. It’s the same fat you would get from ground beef drippings, a different fat but still excellent.

    Hi Rachel... I just don't know what a person would do with tallow. I made lots of it but I never use it for anything, I just have it in my freezer, waiting... I just make my steaks or beef patties in the Air fryer and use my oven for lamb roasts. There is no source for Suet where I live on Vancouver Island. On the rare occasions I eat eggs I just fry them in a pan with butter, or my home-made ghee. I guess I use ghee where you use tallow.

      @peter-robinson ปีที่แล้ว +8

      hi, try warming it a bit, so it’s soft but not liquid, then whip it in a mixer or food processor. Once it becomes fluffy, scoop it into jars. It’s an excellent natural skin moisturiser, is also great when rubbed into wooden cutting boards and utensils, protecting them from moisture. I use it as a butter replacement too, oh and on the wooden handles of my good kitchen knives, rub it in, let it sit, then polish off the excess with a dry soft cloth.

    • @jwm4ever
      @jwm4ever 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @peter-robinson If the tallow us rendered and it's hard, there's no way to get it to whip up whatsoever.
      Once the tallow is very hard, no matter how much of another oil you mix with the tallow and whip it, it will always go rock hard again.
      There's definitely different types of beef fat, and some will render where you can whip it up and itstays soft and whipped, and other fat will render down rock hard and stay that way. That's better for cooking with.

    You have the plastic grinder for your Kitchen Aid; It is, without question, a poor quality attachment.
    I would recommend that you get a good quality manual grinder. You can use it with no power and manual grinders usually take up less space. A good quality electric grinder is perfectly ok as well.
    In my research, the only grinder attachment for Kitchen Aids, that held up and didn't leak blood and fluids into the head of the mixer is no longer available. I have read nothing but negative comments on every attachment for the Kitchen Aids ranging from breaking quickly, to not grinding well to leaking into the machine.
    As I'm sure you know, a grinder is great for making your own sausage, lunch meat, ham/chicken/turkey salads, nut butters and even pickle relish.
    Hope this helps.

    Great Video! Big fan of tallow. If you are not into paying $13.00/pound for suet (kind a pricey as it's more than a good NY Strip). Simply buy yourself a quality brisket. It will provide a quart of tallow once you trim it (free), and who does not like smoked brisket for dinner ;-)

    I have heard some people saying they get a film on the roof of their mouth from eating tallow rendered from suet, have you ever noticed this or heard of this? Maybe filtering properly can prevent whatever creates the film from forming?

    • @jwm4ever
      @jwm4ever 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      YES!! Absolutely there is a huge difference from the Suet Fat from around the organs, which renders down Rock Hard, vs the Beef Fat scraps that renders down more soft and better used for skin care.
      The Suet from around the organs once rendered will b
      e rock hard and can leave a film on the roof of your mouth, and it will never absorb into your skin if you're making a body 11ècream.
      Use only fat from beef fat scraps for making tallow for skincare

    Your kitchen aid stuggled because it's light duty but also because your fat was too warm. Fat smears when it's too warm from going through the grinder. When I grind for sausage, i semi freeze meat before grinding so fat doesn't gum up. Not frozen solid but maybe in the freezer for about 30-45 minutes
