  • Buffalo momos and lots more tasty street food on my blog: migrationology....
    One of the most popular things to eat in Nepal are momos, which are basically steamed dumplings. There are many different fillings including chicken and all vegetable, but there's nothing more popular in Nepal than a plate of buffalo momos! While walking around Kathmandu you'll see the signs for momos all over the place, and outside of every momo restaurant is a huge steamer that often hisses as the dumplings are flash steamed until fully cooked and ready to be served.
    Momos are very popular throughout Nepal and also Tibet and parts of Western and Northern India. They are very similar to method and preparation to Chinese jaozi or Korean mandu, but in Nepal the filling ingredients taste quite different. I'm not sure what is all included in the fillings, but in these particular momos it tasted like a combo of minced buffalo along with a few subtle spices - not spicy, but nicely spiced.
    One day as I was walking from the Kathmandu Monkey Temple to back to the Thamel street area of the city, I decided to grab a quick plate of buffalo momos for some much needed energy. From the outside of the restaurant I quickly noticed exactly what they were selling and I picked a table and seat at the back of the restaurant, surrounded by blue walls with a little table. It was a little scrunched, but was fine for a quick snack.
    From the massive steamer, the owner of the restaurants scooped me up a plate of freshly prepared buffalo momos. She then added a scoop of hot sauce and other sauce, which I really had no idea what it was but after tasting it, it tasted a little nutty, very tasty. The buffalo momos were very meaty. If you don't like the taste of meat you probably wouldn't enjoy buffalo too much. Apart from there being a little too much fat mixed in, they were really good, and hearty. The sauce on the top made the momos even better, adding a little spice and also a lovely nutty fragrance. A plate of these buffalo momos in Kathmandu, Nepal, cost me only 35 Nepali Rupees which is only about $0.40 - now that's a good deal and delicious food!
    When you visit Nepal, you'll have multiple opportunities every day to enjoy momos, and along with buffalo you can also try chicken and vegetable. I also really like the veg momos in Nepal!

    Who said we cannot kill cow or eat beef.
    Manusmriti (Chapter 5 / Verse 30) says, “It is not sinful to eat meat of eatable animals, for Brahma has created both the eaters and the eatables.”
    Maharishi Yagyavalkya says in Shatpath Brahmin (3/1/2/21) that, “I eat beef because it is very soft and delicious.” Apastamb Grihsutram (1/3/10) says, “The cow should be slaughtered on the arrival of a guest, on the occasion of ‘Shraddha’ of ancestors and on the occasion of a marriage.”
    Rigveda (10/85/13) declares, “On the occasion of a girl’s marriage oxen and cows are slaughtered.”
    Rigveda (6/17/1) states that “Indra used to eat the meat of cow, calf, horse and buffalo.”
    Vashistha Dharmasutra (11/34) writes, “If a Brahmin refuses to eat the meat offered to him on the occasion of ‘Shraddha’ or worship, he goes to hell.” Hinduism’s greatest propagator Swami Vivekanand said thus: “You will be surprised to know that according to ancient Hindu rites and rituals, a man cannot be a good Hindu who does not eat beef”
    (The Complete Works of Swami Vivekanand, vol.3, p. 536). Adi Shankaracharya’ commentary on Brihdaranyakopanishad 6/4/18 says : ‘Odan’ (rice) mixed with meat is called ‘Mansodan’. On being asked whose meat it should be, he answers ‘Uksha’. ‘Uksha’ is used for an ox, which is capable to produce semen. The book ‘The History and Culture of the Indian People’, published by Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, Bombay and edited by renowned historian R.C.Majumdar (Vol.2, page 578) says: “this is said in the Mahabharat that King Rantidev used to kill two thousand other animals in addition to two thousand cows daily in order to give their meat in charity”.
    So as you see the Aryans and the Brahmins have over the course of time changed the facts and with that change the history of ancient India. Lord Shiva was the original God of Kirat people, meaning kirat people or kiratas were the original worshiper of lord shiva. Later the Brahmins included Lord Shiva into Hinduism just like how the Brahmins changed the whole concept about eating meat and killing of cow.
    Now let's hope in the new Constitutions of Nepal we can kill cow so we can eat beef momo and have beef sukuti. Enjoying hot beef momo with beef sukuti with warm tongba and taking a chill relax at my home here in Nargarkot watching sunset is the dream i am hoping for.

      ***** you fail. vishnu purana was written way much later. the first hindu scriptures like the veda clearly mentioned that cow was eaten especially by some of the non-aryan tribes.
Kirat people are non-aryan. they are not aryan. Kiratas are Mongoloid race and yes they used to slaughter cow and eat. only after the ayan conquered and arrived at the kiratdesh, did the aryan king imposed their culture on kirat people.

    • @dilipraii
      @dilipraii 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** that's your logic. just because cow gives milk doesn't means we cannot eat it. even pig gives us meat. so are we suppose to worship pig?
      even buffalo gives milk? so why is buffalo not worship but kill in a millions.
      so dob't give your stupid excuse. this excuse was of course made up by the brahmins. they do not eat cow but it doesn't means they can impose their ideology thinking on everyone. we limbu people of nepal do not have taboo in eating pig or cow unlike the brahmin and chettris they do not take beef. they also do not eat pig.

    • @inshaallah7802
      @inshaallah7802 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** plus sonny go and drink milk. hindus are not suppose to eat meat. any meat that is. pure hindus do not even take fish or eggs. pure hindus are mostly brahmins and they mostly lived in Gujarat india. they are pure vegetarians. so if you eat meat you are against your own culture and religion.
      as far as i know i came to learn that limbu people are one of the kirat who are mentioned in veda. kirat are non-aryan and they did not used to conform with the vedic culture and vedic religion. And because kiratas did not conform and follow vedic culture and religion, kiratas were label as Mlechha.
      Mleccha (from Vedic Sanskrit म्लेच्छ mleccha, meaning "non-Vedic" or "non-Aryan. Mlechha is means barbarian and foreigners.
      so did you see how racist the aryan were. just because the kiratas did not follow and confirm with vedic culture and vedic religion, they were label as Mlecha which means barbarian.

    • @limbudilip
      @limbudilip 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** yes that is true. actually pure Hindus do not eat meat and drink alcohol. Pure Hindus do not eat any kinds of meat not even fish or egg. and yes they do not touch alcohol. forget even about drinking. i am shocked to see so many brahmin and chettry eating meat in nepal. some of them even take pork which is against the Hindu culture. And i am shock to see many of them also drink alcohol. brahmin and chettris of Nepal are not pure hindus. they have been contaminated.

    • @limbudilip
      @limbudilip 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** the reason why Hindu Muslim Christian and Jews do not take pork is because they all originated in same place. Hinduism were started by the Aryans tribes when they migrated to India. Aryan tribe are Caucasoid race people, who came down from southwest of Russia and entered India.
      Islam was started by the Arabian who also belong to Caucasoid race. Christian and Jews are both Caucasoid race. Therefore we see Hindus Muslims Christians and Jews share common ancestors. They came down from Caucasoid race people. This is the reason why Hindus Muslims Christians and Jews refuse to take pork meat because in ancient time, pork was unavailable in Europe where Caucasoid race people originated from.
      Pig was first domesticated in China. This is the same reason why pork is a delicacy to Asian race people.
      And when the knowledge of domesticating pigs became available in Europe, the cost of rearing the pig was very costly. There was lot of money for rearing pigs. Because of this reason, the Hindus Muslims, Christian and Jews link pig to religious belief. They make it taboo for people to eat pork(pig meat). Ever since this culture that pork is haram(sinful) in Hindu Muslim Christian and Jews existed even today.
      But if we look back at the Eastern Asian culture, pork is eaten from China, Korea all the way to Japan. And yes Burma Thailand, Vietnamese also feast on pork. Likewise Kirat people in Nepal have no taboo against eating pork. In fact i learn that rai limbu sunuwar magar and other kirati people make use of pig in almost every rituals from wedding to birth to death.
      It's only the Hindus like the Brahmins and Chettris who do not touch pig. The reason being stated above.

    Wow. Am Nepali and amazed to see how the prices have risen. Npr35 per plate back then and now minimum 100 even at local. 150+ at fancy restaurants. Prices go high quickly.

    Siyona Shrestha, now 11-month-old, will die within the next few months if a rare disease called spinal muscular atrophy (SMA type- 1) is not cured. And the cure is expensive. The family needs at least Rs 250 million ($2.3 million) for the treatment.
    Please Help...!!

    Hey, very similar, but perhaps the Nepali ones include a bit more spice and the dipping sauce is different. Other than that very similar.

    People specially Indians should know how to pronounce it correct. Coz i see them mispronouncing it everywhere. Its "Mo:Mo" period. No singular, no plural . It isn't Momos. Its "Mo:Mo".

    The quality of momo depends upon the quality of meat, most places don't serve good quality momos. Hope you like it though.
