Talk about a hydroponics FAIL!! I wanted to test out the kratky method but with larger plants. I figured it could work but I to test it out. Here's the problem, I stopped caring about them! This is where it all started. Although this time around I kind of failed on this, it was a great example of why paying attention and mindfulness are key is gardening. Ahh that therapy seems to creep back doesnt it? Come with me as i try and fix my hydroponic fail into a gardening positive win.

I know yaz are probably thinking that I suck as a gardener 😑 absolutely not. This is just a perfect example of my brain. I didn't pay attention, wasn't mindful, impatient and half ass went thru it. HELLOOOO this is why gardening IS MY THERAPY in learning life skills that I can implement in real life, HENCE THERAPY. I will get it right one day, im basically RETRAINING my brain and that may take time.
Am I disappointed? You bet but I knew there was a learning experience from it and I hope u did to.

It takes a beautiful brutally honest ADHD gardener to make such a wonderful video. This is far more instructional thanseeing perfect plants and hearing about what could happen if you don’t do A. B. &C. Good job.

I love, love, love your energy. I too use gardening for mental health (PTSD). I mainly grow in soil, but just started with Kratky. In looking for info, I ran into your video and found it very entertaining and energizing while providing exceptional information. Keep up the good work. Thank you!!
I concentrate on hydroponics more in the winter time when I can't grow outside. Let's see what's up for this winter!
Nice to see someone share their failures and lessons learned. The lessons I have learned over the years are: use black buckets to keep the algae out. For plants like peppers and tomatoes, build a cage outside the bucket. In your case, you could easily shape the cattle panel like you use for your greenhouse around the bucket. Cut 2 holes in your lids. One for the plant, the other to use as a observation/refill hole (be sure to make a cap for the observation hole). Keep your water levels at a consistent level and put your plants on a feeding schedule. For buckets that stay outside in direct sun for 8+ hours, I wrap them with reflective insulation to keep the bucket cooler internally. Without it, the water in the bucket heats up and can kill the roots. Also, I’ve never seen anyone feed their plants by just tossing powder Masterblend into a bucket with a growing plant. I liquify the blend with Magnesium and calcium nitrate and blend in when I top off the liquid in a bucket

Thanks! We can learn alot thru failure. Guess it's the impulsive side of me that tries stuff out just to see of it'll fail or work out😆
I set up 5 Kratky tomato buckets out in full sun last summer and then forgot to check regularly. They grew well until they ran out of water, so I topped up. It was then I found a video explaining the root systems of Kratky plants. By the time I checked two days later, they had drowned, and it was a fight to save them. I didn’t end up getting any tomatoes from those plants. Now to hyperfocus on a self watering method for next summer.
I grow all of my peppers in 5 gallon buckets. But instead of hydroponics, I grow them in soil, with a water reservoir so that I don't have to water during the week. I also use "tomato cages" to support them. I picked about 20 jalapeños last weekend. My cayenne pepper plant has peppers all over it. And my bell pepper plants are doing really well.

You can hot glue the net pot to the lid. And they make 5 gallon round bucket net pot lids

This was a real video! You got the bug bites I got, the top-heaviness I got, the root algae I got and the ADHD I got!
I don't know what that foam was, but I got that too.
Almost all of my problems went away when I started blocking the light. I wrapped the top part of my net pots with non-toxic tape, so the roots grow out the bottom. I watched videos about it and thought I was supposed to use the lyca rocks, but when I saw you use the river rocks, I was mind-blown. Maybe I can grow tomatoes now! Mine got so top-heavy I had to put them in soil. Oh yeah almost forgot - I painted the outside of all my buckets flat black. I have ADHD so bad all my posts have "(Edited)" haha
🤣 u found your peoples! I've gotten alot better since this vid n have done more hydro experiments on here. The foam was just a Styrofoam board but have since started using pool noodle! Works awesome
Small tomatoes grow really well in 5 gallon buckets. The larger ones I have had to use 55 gallon drums, due to the water uptake. I really enjoyed your humor and this video!😍

Tie twine / gardening string to cattle panel, let it hang all the way down. You can wrap your tomatoes around that or use plastic clips. Won't work for the thicker plants unfortunately.
I was told I could be the ADHD poster child by my tester. One trick I have is that I have a 3 ring binder where I keep track of my gardening. I also keep a running list of to do chores. I pick 5 at a time to tackle. I would keep post its in your greenhouse with a pen so you can make visual cues to help add to the chore list and to draw your attention to certain plants . This something you cannot do without a greenhouse. Mine blew away in high winds. All 3 of them. You should have seen the goats when they saw that. They would not go in their shed for hours. Anyway. Keep at it.
Improper mixing of nutrients causes precipitation. That's what's floating on top the water. You need to dissolve each nutrient in a separate water reservoir before mixing together. Like masterblend separate from Calcium nitrate
Yep another sad lesson to learn. I can't rush the setup process, gotta think thru better
I was thinking that same thing. Problem is when any of the 3 masterblend nutrient types arent fully dissolved, that can cause a nurtrient lockout.I measure in exact grams and dissolve each separately in warm NON chlorinated water. Im new at this too..so far so good but really want it to work so more time was needed to carefully research and carefully set it all up.

Hi ADHD, just found you and you know what? I learned more from this one video than from all the "experts". You dealt with a lot of problems and handled them. Good on you 🥳. I'm just getting started and was looking for tomato and pepper ideas for keeping them upright. As you did, I'm going to use some posts, but probably outside of the buckets so the lid can be lifted up to check roots and water levels. I'm also considering making some type of external water level indicators.

Paint the buckets, and make a trellis system to go over your buckets that will stop the algae and top heavy plant issues
Big plants need big net pots. They make them specifically for 5 gal buckets and big plants
Bugs are the biggest problem with open ended greenhouses
Use string from the cow panel down to the tomato, like professional growers.
Girl, u so real, I'm sorry I didn't find you a year ago. Just listening to you made me fall in love. Anyway, I'm retired and now getting into kratky and hydroponics pump system. So I'm learning from you.
Wow I think you are doing a good job with your plants and I grow plants out of tidy cat litter boxes also. I mean really it is only clay and if you wash it out so what it is a thick container and it is not clear so it works. 😁

You can use standard tall tomato cages around the bucket (stakes on outside of bucket).

I like your honesty. Have you tried using 1 inch slices of a pool nooodle for your plants? Cut out about half an inch of the pool noodles and use that part to hold the seedling in place in your container. Watch Mike Vanduzee's videos to see how it's done. Good luck with your garden.
Yes! I love using pool noodles. This vid was in the summer but this past winter I experimented with a bunch of indoor hydro. Did an NFT system, DWC etc n I used the pool noodle! I'll never go back😆
The algae is growing because your buckets need to be wrapped with black plastic or foil to prevent light .or use dark black or blue buckets. Also, get a float valve and water reservoir and set to refill solution at two inches below the net cup. Its a pain refilling by hand. I stack two buckets, the bottom bucket has the float valve to control the water level and the top buck has the solution or you could use a 20 gallon trash bin for a lot of kratky buckets.
Set up some bamboo canes like a teepee frame over the plant
And no light can be in the bucket spray paint the buckets black or by black buckets or get reusable black buckets however you wish so no light gets inside😊
Your ph is off in the water clean bucket and put fresh water in there and nutrients and get a pH tester it should be about

thank you for your videos! I think a lot of light bleeds thru any color plastic, except black. I did my first hydro-5 gallon pail this year. Saw a video explaining that all light must be blocked. They painted pails with black spray paint. I had an orange pail, and I avoid spray paint, so I wrapped it with a black piece of drape fabric that blocked all the light.
I thought of that too! 🤔 was like damn I wonder if light can get thru these colors😑

try aluminum foil around the buckets to mnimize algee.
i used some old oilpaint do make it stick on the outside of the bucket .

lol i was going to say mylar or reflectix, although this is the same principle, shoudl ideally reflect heat away and light

I like it. Like the attitude, the "devil may care", here's what I did...it didn't work (there's some Jersey in there...isn't there?) Yeah, I like this. It's about 99.9% videos on YT with folks showing beautiful results and no discussion of what can and does go wrong. Failures are very instructional. Thank you.
Hey, many folks are using additives with the MasterBlend (apparently it's even on the package and/or their website instructions). I dunno which MB product you are using here but, for hydroponics, I have seen countless sources using MB Tomato 4-18-38 and then adding Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) and calcium nitrate for hydroponics. The dry components are used at 2:1:2 (MB 4-18-38 : Epsom salt : calcium nitrate). I watched one video where the guy used that mix just to water tomato plants in soil, completely *not* a hydroponic system. I don't know about what the Epsom salt does in terms of disassociating in water, but the calcium nitrate disassociates into Ca 2+ and NO3 1-, which, if my reading is correct, are the forms of Ca and N that plants take in directly. This at least adds some calcium and some additional nitrogen which the *4*-18-38 could use. FWIW, HTH. I, too, don't know everything...I could be wrong. My bags of MB 4-18-38, calcium nitrate, and Epsom salt were ordered today...haven't done any of this yet.

its the white bucket letting the light in that creates algae. You need to cover them in thick plastic or newspaper anything that blocks ALL the light. Some go to bother of painting but that's expensive.
Yea I learned that lesson the hard way lol I use darker colored buckets now
Tie the bucket handle to the panel, then tie the plant to the handle or the string tie to the panel.
you ever have any heat problems? i was concerned about having an outdoor setup
Heat problems not during regular grow season but in winter nah I don't grow outside but I do have a bunch set up indoors. Tomatoes baby!!
dang you might try a float sensor, if one gets low, and like have it scream at you. i know one guy uses transparent containers, and then uses covers to protect the solution from light, lets you check easily the water levels, kinda wanted to see all the ways i could fuck up lol. this is great, i'd try neem oil and soapy water, you kinda have to be there checking every day, but usually i do a daily check. mainly cause i need to go outside for my sanity.
My dad uses the float valves in his rain getters. And WOW what a great idea your 💯💯 right on needing something to scream like a banshee n let a gal know. 🤣🤣 at least people know what NOT to do
@@TheAdhdGardenerDo you check and adjust ph? If not, that could be part of the reason why those plants are struggling.
8:03 Adding nutrients like that is really bad for the plants. You should pre-mix your solution in an empty bucket, then add the solution to your plants. Are you checking PPM’s on your plants throughout their growth cycle? When it’s hot, you might have a situation where your plant use up more water than nutrients. This then make the solution in your buckets way too strong, which can kill your plants. Kratky in 5gals works best for fast maturing plants. For tomatoes and other larger plants, I would do kratky in a trash can
Lol you can't throw in masterblend directly into those buckets 😳 dissolve it in some water first. Then throw the water into the buckets.

What's been working for me at controlling algae.
I'll add 1 tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide and 2 drops of 6% chlorine bleach to per gallon of water.
Reapply the peroxide ever 4 days and the bleach every 2-3 days.
Keeps my reservoir clean.

Put some wire cages around the buckets or wooden rods tied to the sides of the buckets. I bought 5 food grade buckets with lids for 60. One bucket ready for hydro growing is 50, so nope. I guess I can get some smaller sized totes. I have seven of the tabletop gardens with lights and pumps but when plants get large they drink all the water in 24 hours which is too much for my schizoaffective disorder to deal with. Lettuce doesn`t do that but radishes did. I hope it didn`t destroy the water pump.
I`m overwhelmed with stress because of my sister and nephew`s family next door so I unplugged all my gardens and let the plants die. I`m supposed to move into my camper in June or July and plan to wait to try to do anything else. I can`t sleep here or handle all the sudden noises they all make. I knew it was time to clean out the gardens and refill with fresh water and all I would hear is complaining and more paranoia from them. "Oh my God they might leak! What if they catch on fire! You`re wasting your money on things like that! Maybe you should put them outside!"
My nephew is a 100% control freak and opens my packages. A lot of my packages came up missing but tracking said they were delivered. One large box I stored on the back porch that had a huge mosquito net thing so I can sit outside in the future without being eaten alive came up missing. It was the only package out there that didn`t have what`s inside it printed on the box. He couldn`t stand it, so he took it to his house and opened it. Only after I complained to my sister did he admit having it, but blamed it on his autistic son, even though my name is on the box. He has "rearranged" the living room nobody uses where all my other large packages are stored 5 times and partially opened boxes in there that didn`t say what was in them on the outside.
I can`t leave to go visit anyone without these psychos ransacking my room. They threw away pounds of seeds that I had in my room and the freezer. So I`ve bought about 300 dollars or more worth of seeds to replace them and stay in my room with the door locked to keep them out. I keep a close eye on tracking info on packages now and I have to check the mailbox as soon as the mail runs because they`ve started opening my mail and bank statements and seeds that were mailed to me are now vanishing. They blame his kid for that too. My nephew is a prison guard. He thinks he`s Matlock. I had saved jugs for when I move to cover early Spring garden plants to protect them from early frosts. They went in my room and threw those away too and accused me of hoarding.

@@TheAdhdGardener I found a cherry tomato plant growing laying flat on the ground covering a 12 ft circle that was loaded with tomatoes. It looked like a giant spider.
I would like to propagate my root in your kratky. Thank you for sharing the reality of using this method and what can happen when distracted. Gardening is my therapy aswell.
