Midsommar is rather brilliant. It’s one of the most unsettling, uncomfortable films I’ve ever watched. The lush green scenery, bright sunshine, and beautiful artwork adorning almost everything adds to the sense of disorientation and dread. Add in the incredibly realistic portrayals of anxiety/panic attacks, grief, and a toxic relationship, and it’s a gut punch. It’s also weirdly, darkly funny. It’s got everything.
Yeah the shrooms trips are rly well done with their subtlety and I also agree with the dark humor of it. It's actually hilarious if you're in the right mindset and a very realistic(ish) portrayal of how someone at their lowest can easily be coerced into a situation so horrible. Or even more interesting, how a pseudo-intellectualism attempt at understanding a group and being "respectful" can allow for gruesome advantages to be taken of them.

@@Resvain Hhahaha no. You can be abused even for someone you love. There's a lot of aspects to this film that are original (or at least not heavily-trod ground), and two of my favorites are how it's horror in broad daylight, and how for once it's a naked guy running for his life instead of a naked woman haha. Unforgettable scenes like the two old people jumping off a cliff and the group watching and encouraging sex scene part are sure to scar many innocent souls.
Yeah...this movie is amazing. It falls into the category or "Folk Horror", like The Witch, The Wicker Man (the original), & The Light House amongst others. Really fun films that don't follow the typical tropes of horror, like jump scares and Bagul moments (to coin RLMs terminology).

I agree about the weather but unfortunately they didn’t get the nature right at all since this was filmed in Hungary and not in Sweden. Being Swedish you can see right away this isn’t Sweden. Det tog mig ur filmen lite!
00:20 Didn't know VKunia was into grape stomping contests. Also, I'd imagine the reason two people can't do their thesis on the same subject is because, as I understand it, a graduate thesis is supposed to be a novel and unique investigation of new territory, something the academic community has not seen before. There is only so much academic glory to go around, so if two people did the same thing, it would be harder for either of them to shine as a bright new researcher and get the cred required to survive in the field.
Allow me to say that VKunia looks adorable in her arboreal/floral print top-l’ve always thought of her as a wholesome Polish-American TH-camr and l find her reaction quite appropriate.
This movie borrows alot from the Wickerman (1973), which is set in remote Scottish islands. The visuals are the star in Midsommar but Wickerman (1973) star is the music ❤
Aster said the core concept of the story is about a breakup and after a breakup, I totally get it. Dani and Christian shouldn’t be together, but momentum and fear of being alone sort of kept the somewhat shitty relationship going until it conclusively ended and Dani was able to purge herself of her need of Christian once he cheated (ignoring the weird circumstances of that cheating of course) and open herself up to a new life with a new family that cares for her and is willing to share her emotional burdens in support of her
By Christian cheating, you mean to say he was drugged and raped, right? And also by opening herself up to a new family that cares about her you mean to say getting indoctrinated and kidnapped (they obviously wouldn't have let her leave) by a cult that murdered her friends and were the ones that drugged her boyfriend into """""""cheating""""""" in the first place, right?
20:45 it's a PhD thesis, it must be original research that broadens academic knowledge. There is a world where they both write separate thesis on the same community at the same time, and they're different in scope and conclusion enough that they're fine, but if one is found to plagiarize the other (likely since Christian is lazy enough to even pull this move), either they share credit (which Josh would hate obviously) or at least one of them is getting expelled and barred from academia
Actually you get pretty energetic on shrooms, at least mentally lol. The effects in this movie are by far the most realistic depiction I've seen of being on shrooms.
i actually found a very culty group in a forrest in sweden, but luckily this was AFTER i saw this movie and when they shared with me about the very rigorous schedule and weird ceremonies i canceled my trip
Weird as it is to say I was glad for your reaction at the end there. Back when it came out so many reactors and reviewers viewed the ending as though the main character had achieved some sort of agency or empowerment like they had been indoctrinated throughout regardless of the horrific things occurring on screen. It was really disturbing to see that happen 😅
It's kind of horrific that the cult's indoctrination methods almost seem to work through the fourth wall, like I'll admit that the first time I watched this, as horrifying as I found the ending, I kind of viewed it as a positive happy ending for Dani, and it wasn't until I spent several hours thinking about it that I realised that it most certainly wasn't
@@christianwise637 Ha! Yeah it might have been an advantage for me that I've been through the Diet Coke version of this in my childhood through an evangelical church program when I was younger called SEP. It's essentially a Christian camp my parents allowed me to go to with my religious friends. I was agnostic at the time but curious and it offered a wide variety of activities like hiking and canoing and outdoorsmanship which was right up my alley at that age. It wasn't till I got there that I was treated like lost lamb that finally made its way home like the protagonist here and constantly had their beliefs pushed on me in some weird and manipulative ways. I didn't like the scene or half the people there especially the adults and never went back. found out from my friend two years later that there was some inappropriate grooming between some of the adult tutors there and the kids would become tutors the next year because of their age, so ever since then I've always relied on the old gut feeling for things like this but at the time I was definitely on the fence and second guessing my distrust of the whole situation. It's a very effective movie in showing how vulnerability can weaponised against you within a group of ill intent for sure.

I'm Swedish and I was shocked how people are so grossed out how we choose to celebrate midsummer here.
I like that ending when Dani is smiling, I think it is a happy ending :)
Im kinda sad I didnt go to cinema.
This movie falls under the category of "recreational trauma".
Perfect for date night!
I understood the grape reference ✊🏽😭
Today on 'lets traumatize Vicki'... 😅
Next up: A Serbian Film..... 🤭
The most unrealistic thing about the movie is the lack of rain during midsommar.
Good movie. I don't like any of the characters, but I do enjoy the funky cult shenanigans and the cinematography.
same
Great reaction . You have a wonderful voice . And your inflection when you speak is wonderful to listen to.

The Harga only "celebrate" Midsommar with sacrifices every 90 years, not every year. That's why they don't run out of people that quickly.
At Uppsala they did it every 9th years.
There are actually Swedish actors in the movie but the movie is filmed outside Budapest in Hungary.
Your outfit was perfect.😊
She would make a perfect May Queen. 😁
I had an exchange on Twitter with somebody who was wondering why she let them do what they did to Christian. I'm like, you saw the movie, right?
Very disturbing movie but it’s so creative!
Oh god no! 😅 I'm so sorry but we love to see it
Viki is adorable every reaction
"does it feel uncomfortable when it flop" good question vkunia 😅
EPIC reaction!! Thank you, Vee! You're welcome to Sweden anytime!
Actually you get pretty energetic on shrooms, at least mentally lol. The effects in this movie are by far the most realistic depiction I've seen of being on shrooms.
Maybe the darkest opening scene in horror history.
When I first watched this I couldn’t even sleep. Every part of it was trauma for me.
The visuals for the shrooms trips in this are pretty much spot on, lots of movies overdo and exaggerate hallucinogens but they nailed it
Yeah so much so I actually had to pause the movie and collect myself. It felt like I was tripping on shrooms again.
It’s my birthday month too. 31 birthdays in a row really takes a toll, huh?
Take a year off, you deserve it!
i actually found a very culty group in a forrest in sweden, but luckily this was AFTER i saw this movie and when they shared with me about the very rigorous schedule and weird ceremonies i canceled my trip
25:03 I’ve got a gut feeling Simon is around here somewhere. After all, isn’t there a little Simon in all of us?
24:59 25:05 25:51 Notice that Christians drink is a slightly different color than everyone else. 28:43
"Oh so they're just knocked out, they're dead asleep" 😅
I hadn't considered the fact that it was her first birthday without her family and now I am DEVASTATED.
Also: Ari Aster is a genius and that is very accurately what it is like to be on shrooms.
Thanks for the reaction.
No I must retreat to my innermost recesses, to reflect on my wickedness.
such a great family movie
