Andy, I know this video is several years old, but I wanted to let you know that it still lives on and I'm the latest person benefiting from it! Thank you for how encouraging your manner is, you take away the intimidating and scary parts and make us feel capable and that's a real gift! Thank you, sir!
Thx Andy, you've told me more in 16 minutes than the two hours I spent researching similar videos on the internet! You;'ve made this an incredibly easy proceedure with clean, concise, and easy to understand and follow.
Thanks this is great. I've been building models off and on for about 40 years and now retired have started building again and finally jumped on the air brush wagon. Ive been using the Testors aztec system but got a full airbrush set for my birthday and look forward to using it.
lots of great detail other guys didnt discuss !! appreciate that "they" all assume that everyone already knows things like the trigger functions thanks !! just getting back into the hobby after 25 years !! never 'brushed before but will now !! your tutorial gave me lots of confidance to go try this out !!
First off Andy I'd like to thank you for all your tutorials! I'm 58 years old and I've decided to get back into modeling. I haven't built a model since high school LOL. Ive got to say that your air brushing and weathering techniques have been the best!!
been spraypainting art for nearly 5 years now, just got an airbrush kit for Christmas. so i will be binge watching every airbrush video you've made. thank you.
As a beginner this was super helpful. A little overwhelming. Between mixing paints, air pressure, needle setting, lots to learn. At the end of the day nothing replaces practice and experience. Thx again!
After i have watched this video, i bought a bottle tamiya black, along with their thinner you used, my result went from bad to fantastic. Thank you very much, you are worth your weight in gold 😀
This is very helpful for someone coming back to plastic modeling after a very long time. Great advice, and explained in a easy-to-understand format. Thank you !
Excellent tip for mixing the Tamiya paint, I have been building model kits intermittently over the last 45 years and have never seen such a simple but effective tip for adding thinner to give the correct mix for airbrushing. Great video as ever.
I'm getting geared up to reopen my woodcraft shop. Specializing in scrollsaw and mini wood lathe work. I make lots of ornaments. The air brush I had was never any good, never worked right. Decided I'm going to get another airbrush and your video fills the bill for things I never knew, it should be of great service to me as I get the shop running again. Looking forward to applying some of the information.
Thanks Andy ! Very informative. I don't know what it is but I think I'm not the only one that has purchased his first airbrush and waited a whole year to use it and instead relied on rattle cans and brushes. I was not aware that you can add Tamiya thinner into a brand new bottle of acrylic paint and keep it thinned. I presume as long as you keep the lid tight it would last a long time. Enjoy your videos! Keep'em coming!!
Thanks Andy, it was extremely helpful showing too thin, too thick, and properly thinned paint. The plain white background worked perfectly. As a newbie, now I have some idea what to expect. Next I would like to learn practice exercises - fine lines, big coverage, angle it for weathering effects.
Cheers Andy, yes, you once again have inspired me. Returning to the hobby after many years and having hand painted only, your helpful tips have made me open my new first airbrush kit ready to have a go.So for what I am about to spray, may my Spitfire be truly grateful! Thanks Andy, you're the King ;-) Des from the U.K
Yep... I have three airbrushes and still haven't had the guts to try any of them. Shame on me. Slowly coming back to the hobby after almost three decades away. So many new techniques. Like having to learn everything all over again. Thanks a million for the help! And please keep up the good work! Best regards from Portugal.
I think all the retired baby boomers are making a come back. I read your comments and feel the same way. I retired and am back at it after 30 years and learning lots of great techniques. Cheers from Canada! @@Emergency785
You have to buy a good air compressor with air tank and adjusted air outpout like the one in video.Without a good air compressor you can not use any airbrush properly.Regards from Athens Gr.
Thanks Andy, your advice is exstemly helpfull. I started air brushing with aerosol cans about 35+yrs ago. Air brushing had over 10 min. or water would mix with your paint. My current air brush cost me $130australian 25yrs. ago.
I can't tell you how happy I was to see you begin with wearing a respirator. I almost never see anyone wearing them in their videos. As someone who has experienced having his respirator fail when using some paint for real airplanes, I can assure you that you DO NOT want to find out what you've been missing. No I didn't buy a respirator until well after I had my brush. But once you use one for the first time you will understand why you want to always use one. Andy, you haven't covered single action airbrushs. To go along with what you said, I invested one of the best at the time, a Pasche H. That was in 1978 and I still use it every time I paint. I did lust after a Pasche V double action for years when I got one and got it functional, I found i couldn't use it ! Due to injury, I can't control 3-D movement of my fingers. You can do almost anything with a single action brush that you're double action does. Their easier to use, too. Great videos, Andy. You have really covered the bases. 👍👍👍👌
I have had a Badger 200 for over 20 years and it still works great. Its single action, for ease of use, but internal mix so it can spray a nice thin line. Love my Iwata but this thing is a tank and easier for most beginners to master.
I just looked at your video on cleaning the airbrush I got a used iwata and I can't get it to work yet ... I over-thinned the primer and it barely comes out and then it spider webs. But I will go home now and very thoroughly clean the brush and then try again ... I am guessing the primer also needs to be thinned a bit but not as much as I did :))) Thanks for the video.
Excellent tutorial ! I'm here as a newbie and i plan on doing matchbox / Dinky diecast model restorations . I'm off to watch some more of your advice before i pull the trigger on purchasing my equipment. Thanks for your time .
Thank you Andy. I have an airbrush I bought about 2 years ago, but have not used it yet, because I'll be honest, I have been intimidated by the operation and care of the brush. I know, it is crazy, but I think just making that first step will help me to get going. I am so tired of the brush look on the models. It is time for me to step up to the airbrush.
Great video, Andy. I bought an airbrush a while ago and screwed up using metallic paint which put me of a little. You have inspired me to get back to practising. If you love the hobby and build a lot of models, you can easily recoup the expense of the airbrush. Rattle cans are around £6 for the small Tamiya ones here in the UK. Thanks a lot for your videos, always superbly explained and presented.
OUTSTANDING, Andy!!!Thank You Very Much for doing this Vid! I am new to airbrushing and didn't know what I was doing. My first project didn't turn out so well but with this video I now know what I did wrong!!!Next project will be MUCH better, :-) Thanks again!
Just ordered my very first airbrush kit. Can't wait to finally receive it and start trying my hand at airbrushing. Your tips are excellent and will come in handy when I do start. Thank you so much for all the info.
An expensive brush isn’t really necessary. But stay away from the cheaper brushes if you’re a beginner. Valves sticking and tips clogging will frustrate you to no end. This is great info. I had to learn this stuff 25yrs. ago by practicing no internet, but it’s easy to learn.
The respirator is also good to use any time that you are using lacquer or oil-based paints, even if you aren't spraying. The fumes aren't good for you and long term exposure can be harmful. Same goes for using solvent-based glue.
Again thank you for all the help, this is a great tutorial, its , easy to understand, and extremely helpful. I myself am barley getting acquainted with equipment and process of airbrushing and this helped out a lot. Keep up the good work.
Just broke down and finally got an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS and am loving it. Using Vallejo model color and it is giving me some great results. Been watching you for a couple years now and have learned so much from you. Love that signed kit as well sir! From a huge fan and follower!
Thank you for your video, it was amazing for myself as I am really new at this, you explained so easy for myself as I have a head injury. Again Thank you.
Thanks so much for this! I've airbrushed for a while, but this is still super helpful. A lot of stuff I didn't know about honestly. Now I just need to pipe my shop compressor to my office. Also need to buy a new airbrush, my Paasche Talon busted, so I'm gonna spring for a Grex TG3.
I was spraying before without a regulator and got frustrated, this definitely helped also I use Tamiya paint and filling a new bottle with thinner it to the lip actually works great
If you have a Hobby Lobby in your area, they sell the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. It is where I got mine. Hobby Lobby usually has a 40% off coupon for a single item available on line.
Could you provide a short tutorial on hand brushing Tamiya paints? Would like to know thinning recommendation along with possible use of additives like flow improver and/or retarder medium. Thank you for all the helpful videos you release!
Very informative with useful tips. Many of my airbrushing problems are down to paint mix quality, so good to hear the point stressed about paint mix being so important.
Super video Andy! :) I just wanted to add something regarding those really cheap airbrushes. When you buy such a cheap airbrush you certainly safe money when you buy it. But nod over time. These are really bad quality airbrushes wich dont withstand certain cemicals. Laquer paints for example. Theyr ability to do a good job will decrese fast if you spray colors who are thinned with other than water or alcohol. Another aspect is that you may not get any spare parts for a certain cheap airbrush in a few years or even months. So i highly recommend to spend a few dollars more in the first place and buy a brand airbrush. As you said Andy, if you take good care of it you have it for a lifetime and even can bequeath it. Spareparts will never be a problem too.
Another great video. My first, and at the moment only airbrush is an Iwata Neo which I paid 60 bucks. It is a damn good begainers airbrush and it’s a very reasonable price. I’m looking for a new airbrush like the Tamiya one for fine detail work. So if you are on the fence of getting an airbrush try the Neo. Keep up the great work Andy and. I hope to see you soon at your shop! I’ve been working on the Skyraider I bought at your shop last year!
Well, I am here from wargamer bit of the hobby (so our job can be a lot worse then proper models), thank you for the info however, got mine as a gift and it's nice to have some basics for this stuff.
omg, thinner in the new paint bottle, thank you so much for that tip. i'm still a nood, never really thought about thinning the whole bottle instead of thinning everytime when i'm painting.
Love the builds and your tutorials on modeling. I've always thought of me not doing good with the air brush. But I watch this video several times, and now I think it's not that bad looking. Thanks. I've got a lot of Bandai Star Wars kits to finish now. Thanks !!!!

Very helpful video. Great teachers assume nothing. The piece showing how properly thinned paint should cover is essential. I needed to see that again.
Excellent video, thanks. Finally someone who explains how the airbrush actually works physically.
