They actually made a game for Game Boy called Puzzle Boy, that's what Nocturne is referencing with the minigame. It had the same mechanics with the block pushing, turnstiles, filling holes, etc

Yes that fact you cannot save and come back was ridiculous. Got about half way and took me a couple hours to come back to later to realise I need to start from the beginning. You bloody need it to get the all Matagama and pierce I think though?
if you could save and leave between levels this whole be a near non-issue, but having to do it in one go is an unreasonable thing to ask for the players
I agree. This should have been an option for the HD remaster. Without a guide or a walktrough, each level is very time consuming, if you don't know how to beat it.

This was a cute little distraction that LONG overstayed its welcome. The fact that it takes 12 minutes just to play out the stages already knowing the solutions is absurd. Did they really need 20 stages?

*There were more of these stages in the game's code.* They actually *cut* a good 30 of 'em. The in-game puzzles are only 40% of the existing content. Check out the link if you wanna know more:

Granted, the devs never intended to make the player play 50 puzzle stages in one sitting, judging by the page. They had some concept of mercy.
@@timothystigers807 Oh God, that sounds torturous. I suppose if you encountered a few machines across the game with 10 stages each, it might have been fun, though. I was thoroughly entertained for the first 7. I was glad it was over by the tenth, and then dismayed when it kept going and just cheated with this guide. I think ten at a time with a few hours between would have been fine.

The developers cherry-picked the maps that would be the most *"fun"* and *"balanced".* There are also a few maps that are too easy* or are too hard, so they were also cut out. Note that the maps below are not sorted after used and unused.

When it was called Kwirk, on the game boy I beat it all without a guide. I didn't remember all of the levels during SMT and ended up looking for help..

Even with a guide, this is fucking ridiculous. This is a genuine torture device. If you could stop and come back to do the rest and still get the Magatama, wouldn't be too bad. Having to do all 20 in one run is evil and if I ever find out who created this mini-game and meet them, I will accept the life-time in prison.

Nocturne is the definitive game of "I would have never beaten this as a kid"
This puzzle mini-game is a gameboy game I had and beat without help as a kid.

My parents liked Game Boy puzzle games, which was basically their only visible interest in gaming ever so I always tried to get as many puzzle games as possible and we'd keep them out on the coffee table and pass gameboys around during TGIF and evening sitcom time..
Opposite for me since I completed this as a kid but now I am giving up and looking up the solution.

I beat it without guides (it took a week), and took 5 steps toward the save point, before I was immediately petrified and killed. True SMT moment.
The worst part about this whole mini-game bullshit is that it's REQUIRED if you want to get the Masakado Magatama!!! And the trophies surrounding the Magatama in general!
But hey you can't say masakado isn't worth it.
OMG this minigame is actually harder than any boss I've encountered so far, and I challenged Matador, Daisojou and Hell Biker.
Imagine just finishing this and you leave and get obliterated in the first encounter you come across.

How about a trip to the Second/Third Kalpa with Riberama on? At least you get EXP an items for your time. Unlike this sinkhole, where in 3 hours, at best, your reward is a single Magatama. Just Geis. And you must do it in one go too.

I cried for at least ten minutes after taking the stinking Geis because of frustration. ...You would think after replaying this game 10 times would make me remember the solutions. Would rather grind in Amala with Riberama on than play this without a guide.

Holy fuck. I initially felt bad I had to refer to a walk through by the 12th puzzle, but seeing how insanely difficult it continues to get, I don't feel bad at all anymore.
This is what puts the "shin megami tensei" in nocturne.
Thank you for making this walkthrough. Worth playing for the Healing Magatama, but use a walkthrough. I wasted so many hours just trying to get past stages 8 and 13, only to find out that it gets even harder. To those who beat all 20 in one sitting without a strategy guide or a walktrough, you deserve a medal.

I think you will have an easier time 1v1ing the matador without any buffs on a fresh playthrough.
I just finished it my first time without a guide. 5 hours of brain seizure taken out of my 30 hours current total of playtime. I rushed back to the save point while switching to Merciful mode so I can never do that trauma factory again.
At least your eyes won't burn from spendings hours in front of the screen trying to solve this. Those tears will be your friend

They fucking knew that everyone would skip this puzzle so they put a freaking Magatama as a reward to force us to complete this shit.
It’s funny how everyone gets this angry over a puzzle in comparison to ambush spawns that instant kill you, bosses that infinitely give them selves more turns, and a literal hallway of death.
You know why? Cause this minigame forces you to do it all 20 levels consecutively WITHOUT PAUSE. That would be like if you are forced to fight 20 ambush in a row and win NO PAUSE in order to progress
Insta kills are funny at least. Like, I remember being killed in Kalpa 5 after some serious progress and just laugh for 5 minutes straight
I spent 7 HOURS playing it in the original game.
Well after beating Nocturne I can easily say this was the most difficult part hands down
....Not that nightmare again :( At least the remix of the Kichijoji overworld theme from SMT I still sounds awesome.

I consider myself pretty good at puzzle games, but nothing could have prepared me for Puzzle Boy.
I literally have no memory of this. Maybe my brain erased it to protect my mind from madness, but not only do I not remember ever playing this minigame, I don't even remember it EXISTING. I clearly solved it though, since I got all the Magatama. Did I really solve it all on my own? Did I look up a walkthrough (which would have been incredibly tedious since it would have required reproducing all the steps displayed on some ASCII art on GameFAQs 'cause there was no TH-cam back then)? Or am I experiencing a severe Mandella Effect?!

In 2003, I was an elementary school student, and there was no TH-cam thing. I remember that after stage 10, the guide of game magazines was almost useless
I did this before going to bed, but I didn't realize how much there were so I ended up giving up just before the last one... Apparently you don't get to pick off where you left off... Thanks to this guide I was able to quickly make it back to where I left off. The should have added some sort of save feature : (.

In all seriousness, there are several ways this minigame could've been improved without even touching the puzzles themselves.
-The first and biggest one could've been giving players an option to continue from where they left off--level passwords, level select, just leaving the machine and asking the kid not to touch it...
-The second could've been to have the kid give you smaller rewards for each stage cleared, which would gradually get better until the grand prize for completing the game, the magatama Geis.
-The third could've been an option to view a hint for any stage, or maybe even a complete step-by-step guide (which would probably require paying the kid some Macca; a complete guide would obviously cost more than a hint, and _maaaybe_ the price would increase with each stage...?)
(I could've used save states on PCSX2, but I decided against it for some dumb reason. Should've just gone to bed and resumed then.)

I would feel bad for using a guide, but just following and trying to copy the moves in the video was enough of a challenge for stage 19 and 20.
