Still today, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is still one of the most beautifully shot films of all time! The Oscar was well deserved.
That is one of the best acceptance speeches in the history of the Academy Awards.
That was an extremely fun and endearing Oscar Speech; so many are a drag. A well deserved win too.

The sword fighting on the tips of the bamboo was so extraordinary. It was absolutely mesmerizing.

A strong list of candidates. It had to go to Crouching Tiger or Gladiator though. Those two movies were just gorgeous.

as a hongkonger its so nice to hear some cantonese ;)
Many of the crew were Cantonese/Hong Kongers.
The leads Chow + Michelle, came from the HK entertainment industry,
so it is only fitting that Cantonese should be spoken.
Can zhang ziyi speak Cantonese haha I know Michelle Yeoh can speak Mandarin from everywhere all at once movie hehe

ilford6x6 O Brother Where Art Thou is actually a very well crafted film. Strong cinematography and a unique color effect process gives it a special and evocative mood. The actual film may split opinion, but the filming process was superb!
And yes tough competition that year. There were some very big films that came out in close succession around that time, I think it makes Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’s recognition even more special.
Martial Arts movies rarely get an Oscar after this movie, last one was Hero

Bad movie
worth a watch, but a bit disappointing
It has a great story action and casting for 16 years later. But also a Made-for-TV feel not cinematic like the first. Notice they did not have the same cinematographer is why.

She should have worn her hair loose.

HAL 9000 gladiator has great plot. Cinematography wise? Its not that impressive.
It won Best Picture. What more do you ask. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon should have won Best Picture but because it is Asian, it didn't.

Even today, 20+ yrs later, people rave about CTHD; not so with Gladiator.
