I've been going through your Unreal tutorials and absolutely love them, from the simple, comprehensive explanations to the affable northern accent and spatterings of humour. Thought I'd check out Maya so I randomly googled tutorials and this popped up - I got this stupid grin on my face the moment I realised it was you and I instantly realised how much I was going to enjoy this tutorial.
This 2 hour video is not only as good, but actually better than the Maya subject taught at my university. You are so organized, clear and professional, yet approachable and understandable. I am absolutely amazed by the quality of this tutorial! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!
Siber try zooming in further, usually when you cant click inside objects its because its actually selecting the outer object (the room). Even though the front walls can't be seen, they can still be selected. Just zoom as far in as possible and see if you can select it there.
or you can press "4" for wireframe view, this will accurately select the object you are clicking, even if zoomed out and inside another object. to get back to normal view, press 5 on keyboard.
Very great, but on minute 37, whe ur going to manipulate the vertices row draguing them up, my cone deformes in a strange way. the vertices i've selected go instaniusli to the ground or to the upper part of the inicial cube. why is that? I'm using Maya 2017 by the way

@@GameDevAcademy Can you pleaseeeeeee do a tutorial like this one on Curves (EP CV etc) which takes the "beginners" from start till the end in just one video. This tutorial has helped me GREATLY in understanding polygons. Would you please help us understand nurbs/curves the same way? THANKS
PLWASE HELP! I'm Stuck on step 33 & 34. I am not able to add glow or blue light coming from projector i DOES NOT SHOW IN preview.... Use Spot Light with fog to create light cascading from projector, Add a glow to the sun material
This is great, one thing for the 2019 version, is to DBL click the select tool pointer and enable camera-based selection, or you wont be able to select objects inside the room unless you zoom in past the invisible outer walls of the original "ROOM" cube.
I've found that enabling Automatic camera-based selection to be quite handy since it automatically toggles it when in shaded/wireframe. Just my two cents since at 37:38 the back vertices were not selecting for me!
your a life saver man, my teacher didn't explain maya to everyone in the class, he explained a FEW steps very quick and told us to get started. You explained everything very well. thank you so much dude.
After 13 years of working in the veterinary field and finally getting burnt out, I decided that I needed to pursue something new in life. Something that I loved and could see myself doing until the end of times. And by end of times, I mean death. My death, to be more precise. Anyway, long story short, I settled on 3D modeling and design. Initially and for the longest time, I was as lost as a cat with its head stuck in a Cheez-It box that its owner was standing in the corner laughing at and filming for all of the internet world to see, and I wanted to give up. I was contemplating going back to my eternal and apparently inescapable future in the dog/cat world. Then somebody on Reddit mentioned your TH-cam channel, which led to this video, which absolutely changed my life. I kid not. A couple months later, and I am 3D-modeling like a crazy man riding the Tropical Skittles rainbow. I am doing things with Maya I never thought I'd be capable of, and it all started right here. This is paws down the best Maya beginner's tutorial video on the planet of Earth, and I don't doubt that it has inspired many more like myself. So I guess all I'm really trying to say is...well, thank you. Your ability to educate and retain the viewer's focus is absolutely gold, and the added bonus of your awesome personality/humor is a breath of fresh air compared to any other tutorial any of us will ever find by anyone else. Ever. Cheers, and I look forward to the future of your channel.
Same here man, I'm 29, been working as a web developer/programmer for 6 years, I know very little about 3D modeling, I have no skills at all in drawing, but I decided to leave programming for good to pursue a career as a 3d environment artist... Hope I don't starve to death, but I don't care about money now, I don't wanna spend my days looking at the clock, waiting for the time to leave work, and looking for the weekends, had enough, I'd rather starve by doing something I love
I'm only 45 minutes in and honestly I never got bored. Not only that but you've helped me *Understand* not imitate but understand Maya. You have no idea how thankful I am. At College I've been imitating whatever my prof. Does without knowing what I'm doing and I would often fall asleep in class so I really needed this. Thank you very much dude, keep doing what you're doing and also Understanding is better than imitation. I see that now. THANKS!!
After11 years of expertise on Softimage and Maya from 1996, I had a break for 10 years and needed a refresher on my shortcuts! I started before the days of internet boom, paid a lot of money to get into the movie special effects field and learn Softimage 3D. Today everyone can learn it for free. All hail internet, sharing and human spirit. Great video!
+OnlineMediaTutor | Maya modeling & animation tutorials! Ok so I got to the point of rendering a shot of the projector light and its not working, the screen is just black
+OnlineMediaTutor | Maya modeling & animation tutorials! couple things I struggled to get right, the solar glare just would work, and the Earth texture seems very bad pixilation , doesn't look like earth on mine.
This guy is amazing. Not only is the video separated in parts but the step-by-step teaching is so easy to understand and simple to follow compared to the other videos on youtube where they throw all that different kind of information all at once... ;^; Thank you so much! >_< *subscribes* *__*

A lots of thanks from Afghanistan. Today I'm a good modeler and I started learning from this video last year so all the credits goes to YOU and this video. You are the best teacher I have ever seen.
Happy to report that I was successfully able to follow along using Maya 2018 without any problems to complete the project. Enjoyed the tutorial so much that I became a Patreon. Highly recommend this series to anyone looking to get into 3D modeling.
Ok so 43 minutes and I have to stop here for a moment, like the video and say thank you and congratulations. You, sir, are a great teacher. Yes, you are right, I'm learning fast, but because you are explaining it just great. This is my first contact with Maya and I already feel like I can go and start creating my spaceship, but I´ll resist the urge and go back to finish this master class.
At 1:06:28, the "Legacy" view port options are removed in Maya 2018... How to fix: 1. Create a text file named: Maya.env 2. Write the following in it: MAYA_ENABLE_LEGACY_VIEWPORT = 1 3. Save it in: \Users\username\Documents\maya\version 4. Open up Maya
@@GameDevAcademy Thanks, I was looking for this as I'm using Maya 2019 and can not found the legacy and unable to see the ramp in my viewport.. I'll keep going anyway..
I tried to dabble in Maya 4 years ago and it was so confusing so I gave up! But I wanted to try again and I have come so far with your tutorials. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart Shane!!!! Keep up the good work and I will support you throughout this journey! Hopefully other will click on the SHOW MORE tab and donate to you so that you may continue to do more great tutorials! My Pledge of $10 a month is nothing considering all that I have learned from you!!! Heck... I spend that much on Chick-Fil-A...LOL!
Hi Mandy. Thank you so much for your kind comment and for your support. I'll m sorry that you struggled with Maya in the past but I'm so pleased that you've been able to give it another go with my tutorial. I'd also like to thank you for choosing to support me on Patreon. I've said this s few times but I never expected anyone to join the Patreon campaign when I set it up and it blows my mind every day that kind people such a yourself are willing to show their appreciation and support on this way. I'm sure that you'll go from strength to strength with Maya now you've managed to work through the basics :)
Question: It wouldn't allow me to select by dragging material to object so I have been click in my outliner box to select then dragged the material to the selection but it will not allow me to choose the floor or the front of the projector... Is there a remedy for this?
I'm currently the only student learning Maya at my trade school, this course traditionally teaches CAD wich is the closest thing I have to graphic design and computer animation. I'm very thankful that my instructor allowed me to pursue this opportunity and for you creating this helpful video to help people like me learn. Thank you very much for the video.
I must say this, before I found this amazing channel, i used to watch tutorials on other channels , and used to get bored within couple of minutes, but on this channel the tutorials are so interesting, that even after 2 to 3 hours I am still interested in learning more, because of the simplicity of these tutorials, anyone can understand , they all are very interesting, useful, thanks to the perfect and the best teacher, regards, Krutika, India
1:17:00 instructions for flipping the one wall that is upside down: Create an identical wall material. Click on the "place2dtexture" node in the node editor panel, then rotate frame by 180 degrees in the property editor panel. Select the single upside face from the walls in the 3d viewport and assign the new wall material.👍
Many Thanks, Shane. Excellent tutorial. Way better than so many of these 'intro' tutorials which spend 30 mins + going through tons of set-up stuff, this option, that option, blah blah blah. Straight in and creating something in the first few minutes. Your experience as a teacher really shines through. I hope your students know how lucky they are to have you as their guide. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Best speed for beginners on Maya, most others are fast at like expert speed and title their videos as beginner. Makes us as beginners more stress. Thank you! 👍
Thank so much for this video! The entire thing was very professional without being robotic, it was very informative, very useful, and it had fun little challenges. ^_^ I came from Blender to Maya and I thought the change would be jarring, but thanks to this great video it's not been that bad at all.
If anyone noticed that the control panel was the wrong way around, you will need to go into "place2dTexture" and muck around with the "Rotate Frame" if it needs to be rotated and if the image needs to be flipped, in "Repeat UV", the second box should be -1.
Honestly one of the best tutorials I've ever seen on TH-cam. This is TreeHouse and Udemy quality. I can't believe this was free. Great job, this helped me out SOOOO much.
Another tip regarding Maya 2019 is to check that Soft Selection is disabled when doing 31:46 otherwise it will automatically expand your selection. You can find it in the Modeling Toolkit panel as a dropdown tab :)
I'm glad I could help you out dude. If you really want to say thanks I'd really appreciate a shout out on your channel. I've just checked a couple of your vids out. You've done really well there, I know the Minecraft scene is very crowded. A channel your size throwing me a bone could make a big difference. Just a thought. Good luck with Maya and let me know if you need help with anything.
same here. It appears to me that the texture applies correctly to the sides of my pillar, but the front of the pillar has color showing at the top rather than the base.
This is by far the best, clear and the most accurate tutorial I've ever seen. Gets you going in just less than 2 hours. Your help is much appreciated, and I'll be sure to spread the word. Thank you!
I am only 14 years old and Iv'e been watching videos about animation, editing and all sorts since I was somewhere between the age of 12 and 13 and I have got to say, this is THE best tutorial I have ever seen. I would love to be an animator one day or probably a motion designer and all that but what I can point out here is that this video has really been a stepping up stone for me. Since I basically spent a year self-studying photoshop, premiere pro, flash and most of the adobe editing softwares, I decided to take on my next step which is to study 3D animation. Maya is so far the only 3D editing Software I have today and at first I thought of giving up since I had a hard time familiarizing the interface but then I found your video and it got me to understand during your tutorial. I love it! Thank you for this video! I appreciate all your time and effort for this. Truly, this is Amazing! SUBSCRIBED and liked! Keep doing great and I hope you would keep on helping others like me :D
OnlineMediaTutor | Maya modeling & animation tutorials! Brother can you please upload some videos on Character modelling as well? It will definitely help others including me. I like the way you teach each and every step and in explain it in such an easier way. Regards
Cinema 4D is a good program for single person or small team. Its 10x easier than Maya. And I use it all time. The reason I want to change to Maya is that all studios use Maya. And I need to learn it inorder to work there !
I came too from Cinema 4D but i hated that when I want good render plugin I must pay like 700 Euros for it. Because with original Render you cant do something that I want.
If I had found this when it was uploaded, I'd have been working for Marvel right now. This tutorial is the best. It not only gives great explanation, but also creates interest.
I stopped on that same day lol, to me it felt the same just different binds and different option locations. I didn't get far enough in to tell a difference, might wanna watch like those "why __ is better than __" videos
Ehh, Blender is quite powerful for amateurs and for people who just want to make stuff. Maya is obviously industry standard fora reason: it's much more powerful at more complex stuff. I like Blender because the button bindings and menus are more intuitive to me.
Ah cool, also, at about 1:17:00, you mention that one of the faces will be upside down. How do you fix this? I tried to rotate the material in the UV tab, but it didn't seem to work well. Thanks!
I finally found out the differences between British English and American English. And this tutorial is brilliant. I use Cinema 4D. I think they are similar with each other. Thank you guys.Very appreciated that I can learn from you a lot.
Yes, you need to find the place2dtexture node (the same one we use to tile the texture for the floor). In the settings you'll see rotate frame. You'll either need to rotate by 90 or 270.
I had the same problem, Thanks. Also This is a very good begginer tutorial I wasnt sure If I wanted to try Maya or 3ds max first but thanks to this tutorial Ill use Maya for a little while. Also do you know how to use 3ds max I saw it on your desktop?
I am having a pretty strange issue which I do not understand. When assigning pillarM to pillar the dirt is only assigned to part of the pillar, leaving two faces without dirt. I have recreated the material several times, rewatched the section of the video where you create it AND recreated the pillar and gotten the same results. It can of course be fixed by going into UV but I wonder why I have this issue in the first place and what I might be doing wrong thanks for answers anyone :) EDIT: when I assigned material to crates it wrapped around them and I had to fix them by UV. Annoying, since in the video this is not necessary. What am I doing wrong? seriously. EDIT: OK so normalize was turned on. hahah... for some reason it only stuck for one of the boxes. Now I have to recreate the whole scene or go around changing UVs. well I leave this here if anyone has the same problem Had same issue with floor even after turning off normalize and recreating the room. Only solution I find is scaling the UV up to fit the texture. This seems odd..
Well, you should be the boss! Re: Leisurely Sunday prep.....yep! Busted :) Just looking for possible tutorials to give some of my students. I'm currently teaching up at Doncaster College with the HND's. Great fun so far - tons of work to do of course. They're going to be making a Judge Dredd bike in Maya and then importing it into Unreal Engine.
+Jason Etienne sounds very cool. I've just started using Unreal this year. I really like it. I'm trying to get my head around the PBR workflow. I think I'll have to spend some time in substance painter too to get the best results. I made a pretty barrel with our foundation degree students last week though using the Stingray PBS shader in maya. Glad you're enjoying yourself at Donny :)
Same here - I can create environments and do all the scripting stuff, but I've still got tons to learn in Unreal. Anyway, in the meantime - keep up the good work!
Sweet man. I am studying game development and am using 3ds max at the minute. I decided to download Maya. Thanks for the tutorial. I do hope to specialise in design and i heard maya is great for building block mesh levels
YOU SIR ARE A LEGEND!!! I cannot thank you enough for this. The tutorial is one of the best I've ever seen for Maya it was quick and easy to follow everything was explained clearly for anyone to understand and I've gone from not even knowing how to move a cube to creating rooms filled with objects I would of been helpless without this amazing tutorial EXCELLENT WORK!!! you definitely deserve more views.
Super amazing step by step video!I love step by step video tutorials because you see and get talked through everything! I never heard of you till I searched 'Maya'. You do a great job explaining.
Thank you! camera based selection was the fix... if you dont active this you can zoom in all the way to the object and you wont be able to select it. Mac custom setttings comes with this option disabled.
Elia1995 you're the 1st person to comment on this. I was using an external mic and it stopped working. I didn't notice until I started editing and so I had to use the audio that the camera picked up. Not ideal but at least you can still hear what I'm saying.
@@GameDevAcademy Four years later I was going to say great tut, but keep the mic off the desk next time (so we can't hear your mouse moving around). It really is a great tut.
Thanks dude I appreciate that. I have ad block disabled for all of youtube as it's an easy way to help put the people that have created the videos I enjoy. The ads aren't too bad on youtube either - it's not like the awful pop up ads you get on some sites.
Guy I love your style....We all know it is difficult to learn and teach 3d but just at 2:00 I have already subscribed to your site.....So far you are the best to me......Video is quality and audio is clear...Procedure is self-explanatory....Thumb up to You....Great work
When I apply the rock texture to the pillar it covers the entire pillar rather than fading off. How do I get it to fade off? I didn't miss a single step. Btw, I'm using maya 2017
The texture files link doesn't seem to give me a link to the texture files. However, in the link below it (the written version of maya) I was able to find a link to the textures. drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B7NaQpPR4mHAS3gtQVFXNGpsZnc
I have to say that this is the most accessible Maya tutorial I have found. You are very engaging and entertaining, and I love the way you explain each step while still giving "exercises" to try on our own. Easy sub, keep it up!
Uhmmmmmm... I hope you'll notice this comment. I am using Maya 2018. Using the higher quality renderer (from the results), arnold render. Light seems to be very dark, i searched online for help, found some, but aren't very useful. They basically told me to increase light exposure on arnold settings. But one thing it can't fix, the light doesn't pass through the sun. But on the maya 2.0 renderer, it works just perfectly. Are there any solution to this problem? Because i think the Arnold render has way better result than the default 2.0 renderer, so I would want to possibly use Arnold renderer rather than the default 2.0 Thanks in advance :)
i have a question...when i was render i can see everything ...but only if i did zoom...but if i try take middle room or high zoom not so close...the render show me all black...i will put the link the examples fotos.subefotos.com/b9d106a527ae5f7d93e38492426a2b36o.png fotos.subefotos.com/1e64bd4fccce70e21371523685b33f5co.png
My lights are significantly darker than yours here and the lightfog does not show up at all. I'm using 2017; is there something obvious which might be the cause? I have to put the Intensity up above 1 and cannot using quadratic decay on anything or it almost disappears. I have tried looking for the solution to this problem. I have recreated both the light sources, and even created a new project and created them there, but it has the same effect of being much darker. This makes me think there is some setting or something which has changed in the 2017 version or something which I have inadvertently changed. Any ideas?
Same problem here, but when i was looking at the video again i notice he was using Maya software to render, and here was setup for Arbol Render, u can change in the render settings. Next where you click to render
Thomas Barrow same. Whenever I add fog lighting it stops working properly. I think this has to do with Arnold because I no longer have the "quadratic" option.
Best Beginner Tutorial on 3D-Design/Maya i saw in a loooong time. It's not that there are none available, nothing could be further from the truth. But you posses a skill set which nearly all of the other Educators in those videos lack. They're surely full of professional wisdom and quite the experts, but you can actually teach. You have a calm voice, you use the right order and most importantly you know exactly how much to explain. Just the things really needed to understand and not ramble on which eventually results in your students loss of focus. But all in it whats needed to get an understanding. Everything is logically and elegantly structured, plus the pace is absolutely on the spot. i landed here while brushing up on 3D-Modelling, which i have left for a long time (outside of a few game engine editors, my last modeler was Caligari TrueSpace 7.x :D yeah, i know...) and i figured i could combine it with finally getting into Maya (which i was planing for also quite some time). I'm working in my spare-time on a little game project in UE4, mainly for fun. And after fiddling around with the engine and getting accustomed to its mechanics and programming, i now enter the creative phase. Instantly the need for a real modeler arose and i'm not on good terms with blender (dunno why, it just didn't appeal to me...despite being a great piece of Software). Your video actually helped me to understand Maya's work flow/basics in a breeze and after it i had everything to continue onward alone building on my previous and a bit rusted experience in 3D Graphics, i fortunately do not need to start from the very beginning. Now I'm up to speed and actually entered the creative part being sufficiently comfortable in Mayan to enjoy working with it. I would really like to thank you for that and give you credit for your really exceptional education skills!! I have never in my life understood a new topic as fast and intuitive, as i did while watching this video. Great Stuff....never stop educating ;) Cheers ,Steven
+Ess Ell you are very kind Steven. I'm glad I could help you get back into modelling and into learning Maya. I do have some other videos that you might find useful if you're creating game art (the barrel is good for normal map baking) and I have also started covering the art side of UE4. I wish you all the best with your game project and your continued learning.
it's just my honest opinion...and being intrigued with 3D Graphics and games for my whole live since i laid my fingers on a Commodore 64 i saw and read my fair share of manuals, tutorials etc., i have rarely stumbled upon people who not only have the knowledge but actually can transport it... this is my fifth youtube comments i posted, which is not my cup of tea, but this really left an very good impression on me. So i had to tell you... I will surely check the videos and barrel which you mentioned! I'm not developing games with commercial intend, i just wanted to build my own worlds since giana sisters and the same feeling never faded. I solely do it as a hobby or personal pleasure :) This time i decided to put everything from all those years together and being a big fan of the Persona series i decided to make my own sequel and transport/translate it into my hometown. That was also a big wish of mine...a game set in my hometown Aachen...So it will take a long time, but the groundwork in dozens of sites in concept is ready and i really look forward to the creation, the whole experience....Best wishes to you and again nice Job!
Regarding the texturing of the pillars, creating the dirty look at the bottom, whenever I apply it it has this weird black non-texture colour at the top : gyazo.com/2222c8145d83630c07a5edda9f12227a
I've been a blender user for years but your tutorial allowed me to switch to Maya in a single day. Thank you so much P.S. I still love Blender and think it's great, but sadly no one will hire you if you don't know Maya
Wow! Thanks a lot! I've been the reckless "Trial & Error" kinda dude when I learned using Maya, which resulted in insanely uneven knowledge and skills, which of course later on made it harder to patiently go through all the basic tutorials and info, that mainly consists of what I already know, in order to fill the endless amounts of small gaps that are missing some very essential info. Your tutorial is perfect. The stuff I already knew got fleshed out from great pointers on how to improve the workflow on that same knowledge, which in turn helped me to finally stay interested in following intently and voila: there came those small but essential pieces I have been previously missing. Great presentation, pace and detail. Great job! Gonna have to remember this clip when I can afford to donate. People like you DESERVE to make a living via TH-cam. Until then, my like has to suffice.
As a future game designer who needs to learn Maya before getting into university - thank you so much! Brilliant video and simplified explanations. Amazing quality - Good job!
Thank you very much. I followed through till the end practicing every steps and I got it right. I am so grateful. God bless you. Am going to share this videos to all my friends here in Nigeria.
started a 3d modeling class we use this program, I am grateful to watch and learn now I won't look like an idiot not knowing anything about Maya. Thank you for the video!!!
After 3 days I finally got enough time to complete this tutorial, I gotta say this was the most indepth tutorial and the guy didnt skip anything. I'm using maya 2018 so there were some things I had to figure out on my own but for the most part this tutorial saved me from giving up on my 3d modeling dreams lol. I also found the instructor very entertaining
Love your tutoring!!! Followed the cabin modeling and am now done with this one!! You are the best teacher and most comprehensive person I’ve seen. I am completely new to maya and UE4 and you are responsible for me being totally hooked now!! These programs really open avenues for creativity!!! Thanks Shane!!
Man you saved my behind--I'm a 20 year Max user and your tutorial is really good and it's making me feel better about how long it'll take to learn Maya. Thanks, pal!
You are simply SO GOOD! I was postponing 3D modelling for years, because I was afraid to not understand anything (like I had this issue with programming), but you are soo easy to understand, always cheering up and have such a good pronunciation that I could not resist to walk by this course! In short: Totally awesome! Definetily sending you some money :)
Such an informative tutorial! Thanks!!! :) I am facing problem for crate texturing. It does not show complete image on each side. Rather it starts randomly and shows random parts of the image on crate faces. So it does not look like a crate. Do I need to set any parameter?
Wow....this video is very helpful to do projects Before I watch this, I was super blur of Maya I thought I can't learn this subject Thanks a lot for this video it's so clear can understand very well step by step 😊 keep it up
I am totally new to maya thank you for teaching me all the basics and how to actually use maya. This tutorial is very informative and I was easily able to start instantly in maya after this and create my very first animation.
I didn't know how to do anything in Maya, after this video I can make a full project and Im not frustrated anymore. You are a great teacher, not everyone can teach.. YOU CAN. Thank you. I can't wait to see more. Im dying to do lyp sync but I need to learn it from the beginning, any advise would really be helpful. Thanks so much
I just changed my major to animation and I was really worried about whether I was going to like the computer stuff cuz I have no knowledge about that but this video is really making me wanna learn more. I'm only 40mins in but I'm not bored one bit. You are really a great teacher. :)
YOU SIR, are so so precious that I could swear that you are the intrigue of Lord of the Ring/Lord of the Maya!!! Your teachings are so so powerful so so meaningful that my tiny little brain is blown away !!! YOU SIR, are the "creme du la creme du Maya!". YOU SIR have my deepest gratitude and respect for what are you doing! YOU SIR, are the perfect teacher!! I wish I had a teacher like you when I was in a class at the University of Art from Bucharest. JUST PERFECT, YOU SIR!!!
I didn't knew what to expect.. But what I got was amazing! Holy cube, you just hit the learning thing spot on! I was really enjoying this tutorial! Often when I watch tutorials I skip parts but I didn't do that once watching this video! Not to fast and Never too slow. I really like the red line and the tempo, the 'Now you do it' moments. I've learned a lot, thank you! Keep up the great work!
you know what??...this is the best tutorial i ever had .. it is of two hours .. but still you made it too interesting .. hats off to your work .. keep it up PLEASE.. you earned my like and subscribe too ;-)
Great tutorial. Also I might add with the backface culling. In the Shading and Lighting tabs, make sure the boxes for Two sided Lighting and Backface culling are ticked or you'll only see a black box after activating Backface Culling
This is a great, thank you! Friendly advice, it'd be great to know how to select the crate again if you accidentally select the room. I'm coming from Blender, and when two things intersect, it appears to require something other than the left mouse click to select the crate and get off the room.
+Shanil Wijesinghe thanks for the kind comment. I'd love to do this full time but I think it's a little too niche to be able to build the kind of Petreon following I'd need to be able to make a living. It's nice to dream though :)
This is my first go at something like this. I am an old dog with a new trick! Great instructional style and easy to follow. Thinking how I can use this now at my workplace. Keep up the good work.
+Clive Chapman Nice one Clive. It's never to late to pick up a new skill. I find a good use for this is to visualise a space before you make a change. I used it to prove to my wife that the sofas she wanted just wouldn't fit into our living room!
I'm glad you found me again. Hope you enjoy Maya :)
Can I use maya on Nvidea 940 mx 4gb
This 2 hour video is not only as good, but actually better than the Maya subject taught at my university. You are so organized, clear and professional, yet approachable and understandable. I am absolutely amazed by the quality of this tutorial! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video!
I'm glad you liked my video and that it has helped you out. Thanks for the kind words
Agreed, really fantastic job.

Use Spot Light with fog to create light cascading from projector, Add a glow to the sun material
after 5 minutes of video I stopped my adblocker so that this guy can earn something for this priceless tutorial
This is great, one thing for the 2019 version, is to DBL click the select tool pointer and enable camera-based selection, or you wont be able to select objects inside the room unless you zoom in past the invisible outer walls of the original "ROOM" cube.
I also had this issue.. And yes after looking around and try enable camera-based selection, it works..
I've found that enabling Automatic camera-based selection to be quite handy since it automatically toggles it when in shaded/wireframe. Just my two cents since at 37:38 the back vertices were not selecting for me!
THANK YOU. I was pullin' my hair out trying to figure out why I couldn't select anything. You should try making your own channel! lol
I can't figure out how to change the renderer at 1:06:47. I can't see the texture when I apply it to my pillars. Please help!
@@yatharthgarg9631 same here if we could have a bit of help would be greatly appreciated
your a life saver man, my teacher didn't explain maya to everyone in the class, he explained a FEW steps very quick and told us to get started. You explained everything very well. thank you so much dude.
I swear this is the best tutorial I have ever watched. Please never stop posting these.

Hope I don't starve to death, but I don't care about money now, I don't wanna spend my days looking at the clock, waiting for the time to leave work, and looking for the weekends, had enough, I'd rather starve by doing something I love
haha nice. I also worked in the veterinary field before. Then I decided to do what I love. Creating stuff :)
Antoni Tescaro how are things going man?
Yeah how is it going now?
What happened to the cat
I'm only 45 minutes in and honestly I never got bored. Not only that but you've helped me *Understand* not imitate but understand Maya. You have no idea how thankful I am. At College I've been imitating whatever my prof. Does without knowing what I'm doing and I would often fall asleep in class so I really needed this. Thank you very much dude, keep doing what you're doing and also Understanding is better than imitation. I see that now. THANKS!!
My professor spent a 3 hour class explaining what you explained *better* in 20 minutes. Your tutorial is so easy to follow and detailed!
Great video!
great video with clear precise instructions, I'm lucky enough to have this guy as a tutor at college/uni, looking forward to learning from him.

At 1:06:28, the "Legacy" view port options are removed in Maya 2018... How to fix:
1. Create a text file named: Maya.env
2. Write the following in it: MAYA_ENABLE_LEGACY_VIEWPORT = 1
3. Save it in: \Users\username\Documents\maya\version
4. Open up Maya
+Brandon Smith that part isn't very important. Keep going, you can do everything you need in viewport 2.0
Kept going, finished it! Thanks for the tutorial! On to animation!

Thanks buddy!
Also, the task manager meme is my struggle.
you deserve sooooo many more subscribers oh my god... this is the best tutorial ive seen on youtube!! thank you so much for making this!!
You are most welcome. I'm hoping the subscribers will find their way to me.
+OnlineMediaTutor | Maya modeling & animation tutorials! they certainly will
If anyone noticed that the control panel was the wrong way around, you will need to go into "place2dTexture" and muck around with the "Rotate Frame" if it needs to be rotated and if the image needs to be flipped, in "Repeat UV", the second box should be -1.
You can press b to toggle soft selection too
@@GameDevAcademy Awesome! Thank your for this video, it's definitely up there with the best for getting started :)!

Hey, when I apply the texture to the pillar at 1:06:45, it looks really broken on 2017 Maya. :| What should I do in this situation?
same here. any solution yet? @onlinemediatutor, great tutorial by the way! thanks a lot
same issue, if i have renderer changed to the legacy viewport it works, but with the viewport 2.0 it just breaks
Im using Maya 2017 but problems occured

Dude you make maya look really easy although it isn't.

is the ramp tool used differently on maya 2017? its not exactly giving me the same effect as yours.
Coming from CInema4D and working with it for 3 years now, I still struggled in Maya, your tutorial sure helped a lot.
Is cinema 4D any good?
Mike Bailey it'S good to understand and easy to begin with
Cinema 4D is a good program for single person or small team.
+Cinema 4D Animations Original rendering is perfect ! Why u need another plugins !
You own the full version of it ?!!
You should seriously make a tutorial on how to make tutorials. This is the best I've EVER seen.
If I had found this when it was uploaded, I'd have been working for Marvel right now. This tutorial is the best. It not only gives great explanation, but also creates interest.
Coming from blender this tutorial really helped :D
At this point would you say maya is better than blender to justify the price?
I stopped on that same day lol, to me it felt the same just different binds and different option locations. I didn't get far enough in to tell a difference, might wanna watch like those "why __ is better than __" videos
Ehh, Blender is quite powerful for amateurs and for people who just want to make stuff. Maya is obviously industry standard fora reason: it's much more powerful at more complex stuff.
I like Blender because the button bindings and menus are more intuitive to me.
+Rahul Nene agreed
Rahul Nene but they say Maya isn't great for 3D modelling - infact that's its weakest part of the software.
Any idea why in Maya 2019 I'm getting this issue when applying the Rock texture to the Pillar material? i.imgur.com/5IUBwJn.png
I have the same issue... I have even four levels of the brown dirt... you found out in the meantime?
Thank you
This is such a great tutorial. You don't just show viewers how to do stuff, but you explain it, which is actually pretty rare.. amazing video my man!
+Noobis I try my best. I'm glad it's appreciated.
The texture for the monitor for me ends up being the wrong way. It's rotated 90 degrees. How do i fix this?
Yes, you need to find the place2dtexture node (the same one we use to tile the texture for the floor). In the settings you'll see rotate frame. You'll either need to rotate by 90 or 270.
+OnlineMediaTutor | Maya modeling & animation tutorials! Thanks for answering this I had the same issue! Also, your teaching is amazing thanks again!
+OnlineMediaTutor | Maya modeling & animation tutorials!
i have one problem (like you only you didn't see it) the monitor is mirrored
Found the 2dtexture nude, but rotation did'nt work for me... I'm going to move forward with the tutorial.
It can of course be fixed by going into UV but I wonder why I have this issue in the first place and what I might be doing wrong
thanks for answers anyone :)
EDIT: when I assigned material to crates it wrapped around them and I had to fix them by UV. Annoying, since in the video this is not necessary. What am I doing wrong? seriously.
EDIT: OK so normalize was turned on. hahah... for some reason it only stuck for one of the boxes. Now I have to recreate the whole scene or go around changing UVs. well I leave this here if anyone has the same problem
Had same issue with floor even after turning off normalize and recreating the room. Only solution I find is scaling the UV up to fit the texture. This seems odd..
I had this problem.. And yes, I did not turn off the normalize from the beginning.. oh my oh my..
Shane - you're the boss! Great tutorial!
+Jason Etienne Sometimes I wish I was the boss! Glad you like the tutorial. You're not doing a bit of leisurely Sunday prep are you?
+TheAmazingGamer T.A.G thanks dude
Super amazing step by step video!I love step by step video tutorials because you see and get talked through everything! I never heard of you till I searched 'Maya'. You do a great job explaining.
Anyone help me i can't select the cube inside the room except i select it in the outliner window...
Even i zoom it in except i set it to wireframe and select the cube inside the room in the view port
Windows -> Preferences -> Selection -> Camera-based selection
or
Windows -> Preferences -> Selection -> Pick chooser
You need to zoom in further to be INSIDE the room box or else you will be selecting the room. Even though you cannot see it, its still there.
Thank you! camera based selection was the fix... if you dont active this you can zoom in all the way to the object and you wont be able to select it. Mac custom setttings comes with this option disabled.
Thanks for the tip ;)

Why does the audio quality become crap at roughly 1:35:40 ???
Elia1995 you're the 1st person to comment on this. I was using an external mic and it stopped working. I didn't notice until I started editing and so I had to use the audio that the camera picked up. Not ideal but at least you can still hear what I'm saying.
@@GameDevAcademy Four years later I was going to say great tut, but keep the mic off the desk next time (so we can't hear your mouse moving around). It really is a great tut.

When I apply the rock texture to the pillar it covers the entire pillar rather than fading off. How do I get it to fade off? I didn't miss a single step. Btw, I'm using maya 2017
having the same problem
solved finally!!!!!
Deleted and created the texture again
Gurkaran Sahni ok, so all you did is delete the texture and re do the steps?
The problem gets solved if i use the 2nd renderer in both the hypershade window and the main window
Gurkaran Sahni oh ok thanks, I'll update my comment to include the fix later after I have tested it.
The texture files link doesn't seem to give me a link to the texture files. However, in the link below it (the written version of maya) I was able to find a link to the textures.

how powerful your computer should be to run latest version of maya?

I have to say that this is the most accessible Maya tutorial I have found. You are very engaging and entertaining, and I love the way you explain each step while still giving "exercises" to try on our own. Easy sub, keep it up!
Your Maya tutorial is the best I've ever seen. Thank you for providing such high quality material for free.
Because i think the Arnold render has way better result than the default 2.0 renderer, so I would want to possibly use Arnold renderer rather than the default 2.0
Thanks in advance :)
Same issue bro. only Maya hardware 2.0 is working
i have a question...when i was render i can see everything ...but only if i did zoom...but if i try take middle room or high zoom not so close...the render show me all black...i will put the link the examples fotos.subefotos.com/b9d106a527ae5f7d93e38492426a2b36o.png

Yea, its so weird. Make sure you are using the "arnold" render engine when he is not using it.
Move to Maya software and not arnold.
Thomas Barrow same. Whenever I add fog lighting it stops working properly. I think this has to do with Arnold because I no longer have the "quadratic" option.
Same issue
Great Stuff....never stop educating ;)
Cheers ,Steven
That was also a big wish of mine...a game set in my hometown Aachen...So it will take a long time, but the groundwork in dozens of sites in concept is ready and i really look forward to the creation, the whole experience....Best wishes to you and again nice Job!
just started a visual effects course and my mind was blown with all the info. So glad I found your channel. Thanks for showing us dude :)
Best Tutorial Ever !!!!!!!!
Exactly!!!!!
Exactly!!!!!
Regarding the texturing of the pillars, creating the dirty look at the bottom, whenever I apply it it has this weird black non-texture colour at the top :

having the same problem
40:56 ohh why thank you
I've been a blender user for years but your tutorial allowed me to switch to Maya in a single day. Thank you so much
Until then, my like has to suffice.
very very useful tutorial ....... please make more tutorials ....... thank you so much
This is the revolution now where I hope 3D artist of the future can just learn from tutorials like this one.
As a future game designer who needs to learn Maya before getting into university - thank you so much! Brilliant video and simplified explanations. Amazing quality - Good job!
You're welcome. Good luck at university!
Thanks Tarik! I'm glad you found this helpful :)
Best video tutorial for learning ANYTHING that I have ever watched. Thank you!!
+Victoria Lovett I like you Victoria. You say nice things.
Man you saved my behind--I'm a 20 year Max user and your tutorial is really good and it's making me feel better about how long it'll take to learn Maya. Thanks, pal!
Just created my very first model using Maya and all thanks to your very informative and comprehensible tutorial! Seriously thanks!
+Hrithik Krishna I'm really glad I could help you out :)
I have learned more watching this than in the 4 sessions i have attended so far in this semester, and i am barely at the halfway point of this video!
+Daniel Soria I know, it's good right?
This Tutorial is awesom. I picked up Maya today, and you helped me to kickstart my process a lot. Thank you for that mate.
+Zero I'm really pleased that you appreciate my hard work. It means a lot
Such an informative tutorial! Thanks!!! :)
I am facing problem for crate texturing. It does not show complete image on each side. Rather it starts randomly and shows random parts of the image on crate faces. So it does not look like a crate. Do I need to set any parameter?
Wow....this video is very helpful to do projects
Before I watch this, I was super blur of Maya I thought I can't learn this subject
Thanks a lot for this video it's so clear can understand very well step by step 😊 keep it up
I am totally new to maya thank you for teaching me all the basics and how to actually use maya. This tutorial is very informative and I was easily able to start instantly in maya after this and create my very first animation.
Deserves praise. I am glad i found your video first before using maya.
Thanks so much
+PJ Stover I'm planning to do lip syncing in the summer
ok great, I subscribed to your channel so I will be watching for it. thank you again.
Just stumbled upon this. This guy is an incredible teacher.
+Truth Seeker I do try to be incredible.
I just changed my major to animation and I was really worried about whether I was going to like the computer stuff cuz I have no knowledge about that but this video is really making me wanna learn more. I'm only 40mins in but I'm not bored one bit. You are really a great teacher. :)
+pal bee thanks pal. I hope you'll enjoy learning animation.
+Marco Byskov thanks Marco. In glad you appreciate the work I put into this.
Finally completed the tutorial and very happy with the outcome! brilliant job can't wait to go through your other videos in more detail
you know what??...this is the best tutorial i ever had .. it is of two hours .. but still you made it too interesting .. hats off to your work .. keep it up PLEASE.. you earned my like and subscribe too ;-)
+Prayag Lehana I'm glad you like it :)
Very organized, clean and clear tutorial. I want to see you do this full time. Support this person on Patreon!!
+Shanil Wijesinghe thanks for the kind comment. I'd love to do this full time but I think it's a little too niche to be able to build the kind of Petreon following I'd need to be able to make a living. It's nice to dream though :)
My college decided to stop using 3ds Max so they just gave us A WEEK to learn how to use Maya at 100%... THANK YOU
I wish I had a dad who was this patient and supportive
Wow. Do you want me to have a word with your dad?
haha no need! I'll just fetch the adoption papers
This is the most in-depth tutorial I have ever seen. Thank you so much!
