I was in a shopping mall once and heard the very characteristic cry of a newborn baby. I wondered what kind of parent would bring a newborn into such a place when I saw that the sound was coming from a parrot in a pet shop. It was really obvious why this parrot was exiled.
Parrots love slapstick comedy. You can have a parrot that just doesn't want to learn how to say ANYTHING for YEARS - no Hello, no Step Up, nothing - and then one day you trip over spectacularly and say "AH FUCK, MY ANKLE!" - and they thought it was soooo funny they've mastered it in less than a day by going over it in their head over and over. If they understood cartoons the Looney Tunes would be the funniest thing in the world to them. Pretty simple, really :)
I had an African Gray whistle at me on my way to my super early college class for several days before I figured out where the sound was coming from(pet store). With it being dark I was creeped out but once I knew where the sound was coming from I enjoyed walking by the pet store.
I kept budgies for years and most of my birds lived more than ten years. They were free flight on the ground floor the house. I never had more than three at a time and they made so much noise and shredded and destroyed so many toys. I cannot imagine the chaos of a big parrot. They are amazing, but you would need to have someone home with them almost all the time.
I think the lady in the first clip made a big mistake. She focused all her attention onto the bird on her arm and so the other one went angry and he just did something to get the attention on him. In some way - he did this very effective but I think this attack was not unexpected because of the mistake of the lady.
Makes me think of my pet ball python. People in my life are soo scared of me being bitten, but I always tell them that if were to bite me, it'd be because I was doing something wrong. And what happened? I did something wrong, and he bit me. Hurt like a bunch of papercuts, so it was more annoying than anything else. I feel like a lot of pets hurting their owners, especially non mammalian ones, comes from people acting wrong first.
In the first clip, to me it seems the biting cockatoo is mate bonded to the woman and tells her to get away from that other cockatoo, basically being territorial over what the bird believes to be his/her mate. Very common and also why you shouldn't own cockatoos unless you understand the proper diet and handling of those birds. Her reaction probably reinforced the biting too, because it worked.
You should have looked at Snowball, the dancing sulphur crested. He actually has perfect rhythm. Most cockys will bob up and down but Snowcall is perfect. He has been studies at Harvad.
When I was a teen the pet stores in my city would sometimes have parrots for sale, and certain macaws could get as expensive as $25,000 CAD. It's pretty common for birds like cockatoos to sell for several thousands of dollars. It's insane. And for animals that absolutely should not be kept as pets.
I have a cockatiel about 23yo, who I got to keep my first girl company when I started FT work. She passed about 5yrs ago, and he's only now coming out of his shell. Having never human-socialised him it's fascinating to watch what things he learns, embraces, resists and, in some cases, is absolutely having no part of. Old dogs may not learn new tricks, but old cockatiels definitely can - although he much prefers to learn with attention and praise based reinforcement than target training. He's also good friends with the local magpies, that I'm lucky enough to also get visits from.
You can learn old dogs lot of tricks. I adopted a dog when he was 10, although I must say also a lot of things are his own invention. At least once. A month he surprises me with something new.
My dad had a male and female eclectus parrots and they were absolute ass holes. The male always snapped at my mom and I, while the female liked to latch on to our thumbs as hard as she could. My mom actually has a scar on her thumb in the shape of a smiley face caused by the beak. I have scars on my thumbs as well. Edit: for many years before the parrots, he also bred cockatiels and parrokeets. He only stopped with them and got the parrots because we moved halfway across the country into a house that wasn't big enough for the many dozens of birds he had.
We have a breeding pair of Red-tail Black cockatoos. The male is very placid and affectionate. The female however is incredable jelous of my hubby and she has been known to take chuncks out of me in the past... litterally! I lvoe her just the same
There are captive bred populations of cockatoos descended from birds imported when it was still legal. They usually sell for astonishing prices. When I hear about Australian farmers being allowed to shoot cockatoos en masse to protect their crops, I think how ironic it is that if they could sell them instead they could retire as very wealthy people! (I realize that this is in no way practical, and I'm not at all comfortable with the idea of highly social animals being sold into very long lives of solitary confinement.)

Young dogs we can train, old dogs and all cats require negotiating :)

I live in France, they sell them occasionally in the local Bunnings equivalent pet section.
