Some were making six figures as civilians before they joined, but just wanted to do the job. Army Special Forces soldiers are a lot of things, “dumb” isn’t one of them. These guys are expected to infiltrate a country, while only twelve deep, speak the local language(s) (hence why SF is the only sof with a foreign language requirement), collect intel, train & persuade the local population(s) into militias, and overthrow governments in wartime. All with and through the locals. Again, all while speaking the language of whichever country they’re operating in. These guys aren’t stupid. Lol. 110 GT score requirement to even qualify.

With a light recoiling rifle like an M4 you can support the barrel on a surface, and then wrap your sling tightly in your support hand and pull down. You can't really get a good cheek weld doing this but it allows you to suppress an enemy pretty well and keep your head up off the gun.
