I love all the educating on set lighting & how the production came together. The last "rant" though is the best part though. I've always hated how wasteful film sets can be. Love what you're doing with reusing assets. My biggest pet peeve is the bottled water on sets. At the end of the shoot there's tons of half full bottles of water all around.
Don't get me started on bottled water! Totally pointless in a studio environment. We had a filter water system installed to give people an alternative they couldn't refuse! (T)

We try to bring enough water to get us through in reusable containers but haven't figured out a system for the rest of the crew. Just want to say thank you for this piece. I am gingerly creeping up the ladder from Camera Op to DoP and this is the most useful and interesting video I have seen regarding Set Work. Also, I cant agree enough about re-using and recycling existing set flats and props. keep up the good work. Once again, thank you.
I've only worked on two low budget features in the U.S. so far, but I was aghast at the level of wastefulness inherent in the way productions are run, primarily by the Hollywood/L.A. pro's. Not criticizing them on a personal level, it's just the method they were trained to work in, that expediency takes priority in making the studio's happy, i.e.time is money. I'm glad to hear you're pushing the value of recycling, and I think it has more validity than just as an environmental issue, it also will save the production a lot on budget not buying materials over that can easily be reclaimed without wasting a lot of time. Perhaps if future studio builds took into account this mindset, they could simply build on additional storage for props and materials, instead of outsourcing everything like they do now. A small change to their current infrastructure could end up proving very beneficial down the road.
@3:51 Cheap led bulbs might flicker, but then you have Astera Nyx and Aputure b7c that are flicker free. Nothing beats the color rendition from an Incandescent light bulb though.
I worked in a studio once where the guy in charge was super OTT about saving everything just in case. (I agree with what Tommy said about reuse and recycle where possible) but it got to the point where more space was being taken up by hap hazardly placed random pieces of timber and other set build supplies that stuff was falling on us, nobody could find anything and there was less and less room to shoot!
This is what I imagined these situations would turn into. Storing inventory properly is very costly, and with odds and ends from torn down sets, you might not find anything you're looking for.
Regarding re-use and recycle of your sets; great job and thank you. If you ever find yourselves exceeding your storage capacity, give me a yell as I'm a short way off in Bristol and can reclaim any lumber into usuable furniture and so further avoid waste.

I don't know if it's possible in the UK but here in Quebec (Canada), the school I went to received parts of sets that weren't used or wouldn't be re-used for shows. So we had many walls, accessories, floors and stuff. It was very nice to work with pieces of sets that had been on tv shows. :)

Hey guys, just a small weird TH-cam issue. The fact that you have a red border that goes around all the thumbnails of your videos makes it really difficult to tell if I've seen a video or not (the red bar along the bottom shows how far into a video you are, all the way across when completed). I only now realized I've missed a bunch of videos because I couldn't tell by looking. Might be something to consider changing.
it's funny how Theatres, or most of the ones I've worked at, do keep flats and set pieces and rework them from time to time. granted things still get built but it was mostly rebuilds that I saw. I don't see why big studios can't do that.
Continuing to enjoy these vids, thank you. Regarding the 'flats', it looks like the reinforcements are 2 x 1", but what thickness MDF do you use. I know that thicker MDF is more rigid, but is also quite heavy, whereas thinner MDF is a lot lighter, but under a certain thichness will warp quite easily. Also, how do you hide the joints between 'flats'?
So many times set flats are just that-flat painted walls. They're perfectly suited for repainting for every need. Also being that they're flat means they can be easily stored. Save your flats! And donate any leftover building materials to organizations like Habitat for Humanity.
I just love the rant at the end. the part about how much goes to waste in our industry is very saddening indeed. some of us save what we can, but sadly often it only gets used a very few times at best. I have seen some nice modular set designs, but they don't work for every style of set. anyway, back to your videos.

We work with a wide range of clients in our Studio, a lot of the time they just need the space, but it just so happened that as Tommy was part of the crew on this shoot, they let us shoot a video for InCamera!

Oh our bins in general are constantly overflowing, so much food waste and packaging!
