I was recently in church bathroom. They had soap. paper towel. MOUTHWASH AND DISPOSABLE CUPS! and i kid you not, 6 different scents of hand/body lotion. but where there any tampons? pads? even panty liners? nope. Because apparently, bad breath is a bigger issue than periods.
I read the comments, and it was amazing for me to see that women were commenting on the issue, and they were accepting of the idea of rolling-up public toilet paper in their underwear. As women we accept so little of ourselves. This is a serious issue, and the best part is the awareness that young girls in school do not have access to just leave school and buy supplies when the need is present, so they are most vulnerable.
The beauty of TED is that it is dedicated to bringing "Ideas Worth Spreading" to the public consciousness, to society, and to the world. Free The Tampons is exactly that- an idea worth spreading. Nancy Kramer has a dream and it's something that effects half of the population- that's not only something to celebrate but something to cheer on. Nancy was not only incredibly brave for bringing this topic to the public's attention but we couldn't be more proud to support her and Free The Tampons.
TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Bear with me... TED (and TEDx) is designed to bring together thinkers AND doers. As stated on TED's homepage, the scope is becoming broader. Nancy Kramer brings up a somewhat uncomfortable issue that every woman has dealt with, and an IDEA that is most certainly worth spreading. Nancy is not only a thinker, but a DOER. It was not self-serving or inappropriate, it was brave and brilliant to propose a possible SOLUTION to this issue.
Kleki yea and women are dumbasses for shaming short men yea I know I’m going to be flamed for this but unlike these triggered feminists I can handle criticism it’s like I’m a....MAN *gasp* so if I can handle being expected to man up you can handle cramps
I think tampons and pass should be free in public bathrooms. I don’t think we should have to pay taxes for tampons. I think business that supply toilet paper and paper towels should also supply tampons.
And lastly, one more comment, I hope the universe and Nancy Kramer reads my words. This problem of the lack of access to female products is also an issue in jails and prisons. Woman, in these institutions are allotted, one pad at a time, and they usually have to beg for them one, by, one - and I mean BEG in the truest sense. In most jails, women use a barter system with other inmates for the one single pad.
Yes it will be a good way of bringing the class's attention to the fact that many women do not want to be responsible for their own bodies and want someone else to take care of them.
Most public restrooms have innovative dispensers to stop people stealing the whole roll of toilet paper. The toilet paper! How do you think they'd react to free unlimited tampons? It's a nice idea, it might be welcome in your company or office, but it's just not practical in the wider field.
So you acknowledge that there's a way to keep people from stealing toilet paper but assume it can't be done for tampons. By the way, I've been a toilet paper stealer a few times in my life when between jobs when I've been flat broke and desperate. I would be happy to see t.p. be a non-food item allowed by food stamps. I never thought I'd be either stuck on food stamps for a while or stealing toilet paper, but the last several years of bad job markets has been a real experience.
The toilet paper dispenser stops you taking the whole roll off, but you could in theory, still roll it all out into your bag. I'm not smart enough to see how you could let one person, take one tampon, but then not another. A timer maybe, but that's expensive and prone to maintenance and failure. By the way, don't feel bad about taking toilet paper when you've been broke. We've all done it (and glasses from bars, ketchup from diners etc)! But like you said, only when really broke. It's cheap enough that, when we've got a job, we'd rather buy it than steal. But I think tampons are a bit different, more expensive, and therefore more tempting even if we're not skint.
Given the fact that one could still steal toilet paper by simply unrolling it, I don't see what would be so wrong about "stealing" tampons. Most, reasonable people I know would only take what they needed because what really can one do with tampons other than use them for their intended use or, in the case of those who've learned this in the military or first aid, a tampon can be used to deal with nosebleeds and seal up a wound. Just think of the complication of not having toilet paper. Generally this can be taken care of by resisting the need to urinate or pass solid waste but there is still only so long one can do this before having to comply to their own body. A woman's period is not something any woman has ANY control over whatsoever. It simply comes and needs to be taken care of one way or another. And even if people could/would abuse free tampons and free feminine care products, I think that is something that pales to the benefit it truly is to have something like this put into place.
syxxfreakinstyx Yes, most reasonable people will only take one if they happen to be 'caught short'. But there are always selfish people who will chose to walk off with the whole lot. Hence my comment about toilet paper dispensers, designed to make it difficult for people to do that. Tampons are indeed a necessity of life, hence the current argument in parliament about the level of tax on sanitary goods. But does that mean every company needs to fund their provision in every toilet in their building? Also the local council, in every public toilet? It is a great idea, but how would it be funded and how would you prevent abuse?
The answer is rather simple. If a toilet is present, toilet paper is apart of the whole shabang. It's like having a sink and no means of drying your hands. These things are basic and sure, people could steal toilet paper or tampons and people do but even when people do steal toilet paper, it gets replaced because having a toilet without the necessary means to wipe is just...well I can see it not being too much of a huge deal with men since they would only need it if they pass solid waste, but for women...we ALWAYS are in need to wipe. Feminine products are also apart of what happens. If an establishment has a bathroom(s), toilet paper and a way to dry hands is a part of what makes it a bathroom. It may add to costs but people didn't stop supplying bathrooms with TP due to increase costs did they?
Victoria Medina men face a systemic discrimination from the food industry that i dont think girls like you appreciate. Guys have bigger bodies than girls. This means more body cells to keep nourished. If men have to borne the cost of tampons, girls better be prepared for sponsoring discounts for the meals of all the men taller and bigger than them
