    One animation detail that is apparent on a rewatch is how well Hinata can focus. Earlier on in the series when we’d see the ball in the reflection of his eye it was off center and askew, but after learning how to read better it’s centered in his eye.

    Hinata's growth, from being scared of big players to being excited by them, from having no one to play with to having a super supportive team, from no one taking him seriously to powerhouses watching his every move: it's all so beautiful.
    That coupled with the realistic pacing of the anime and manga is what makes Haikuu!! so beautiful.
    My only disappointment is the fact that I'm afraid no anime/manga will ever touch me the way Haikyuu!! has.

    Actually, I think that coach Washijo is one of Hinata's most valuable teachers. He knows what Hinata was lacking, which was a general understanding of the game. Of positioning. Of technique. Without these, he truly had "no value on the court" which is why he wasn't sent home but made into a ball boy. It's one of those stereotypical "Asian Teacher" moments where you are being taught something valueable without being aware of it yourself, at least at first. Washijo saw the athletic potential in the game against his own team and he gave Shoyo what Karasuno could not give him - lots of time on the sidelines. It made Hinata realize what he was lacking. Positioning, understanding, defensive behaviour, and rest. That's why he had such immense growth in the tournament.
    Washijo isn't Hinata's antigonist. In my eyes, he's his greatest hero. Of course, you might say, why didn't Washijo just tell Hinata what needed to be done? Well, Shoyo wants to go pro. There won't always be a teacher to tell him what to do. He needed a moment of realization. He needed fo find out what he needed to do. It was a test of character.

    • @HarshReviews
      @HarshReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      I completely agree with you! I’m not sure if you’ve read the manga so I won’t go into any spoilers here, but I also think washijo made him a ball boy on purpose. If hinata actually practiced with the rest there was no way he would’ve gained that in game sense, it was only something a ball boy could observe. I realize now maybe I didn’t make that clear in this video, but that’s because I wanted to make it from hinata’s perspective

    • @Flistatec
      @Flistatec 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@HarshReviews I read the manga, yes, which is why i didn't want to go into spoiler territory. But even with what can be known by anime fans now - Washijo doesn't even look like an antagonist in the manga. I think it's only in the anime that he looks kinda mean, heavy rings under the eyes, scowling all the time. As a manga reader, I rather remember him as a kinda soft-faced, smiling nice grandpa type of guy. I think this is a huge difference between the two media.

    • @kanachiaki
      @kanachiaki 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Completely agree! I think he ends up being one of the most influential people in Hinata's growth, even in later moments. I didn't like him much in the beginning but he did a complete turn around and is now one of my fav characters.

  • @seekittycat

    I love how the things Hinata learns for growth isn't some impossible magic or some Olympic level technique. But simple basics found in schools that he doesn't have because he didn't have a team. When he learned tempo from coach Ukai and first learned split step I though "eh that's it?" and then I realized YES the basics, the foundation, the good habits, the attitude, the desire to learn, that's really it. Be greatful being able to learn these foundations just like Hinata is greatful for every ball that comes his way.

    I think what is to be praised about this anime is its pacing. Hinata's deepest training arc only gets in SEASON FREAKING 4!! Where any other anime or series would have it most likely in the begining, as an introduction to the character and the sports to everyone, instead we have it deep into the series.

    • @HarshReviews

    I'm watching coach Donny react to Haikyuu S3 atm, and there was a scene where Daichi was the ball boy in his first year at Karasuno. He caught one of the spikes from his upperclassman and it was a really nice parallel to Hinata being the ball boy at training camp. Really showcases how much you can learn from observing, plus it adds some punch to Suga's emotional moment moment when he witnesses Hinata's growth (knowing the third years also had moments of growth during their ball boy moments)

    I wrote this on my tumblr so i'll say it again, 'Sometimes I think about how Hinata Shouyou, fell in love with volleyball once he saw the Little Giant play. How he was so obsessed and motivated that he practiced by himself or with anyone he could. Try to form a males volleyball team in his middle school (and was rejected multiple times) until he got some people to actually join. How he was captain and the only one who (kinda) knew how to play and managed to play one official match only to lose with such a skill/score gap. Then had his first ever team with Karasuno, but still he felt beneath the team in skills and thought they only kept him in because of Kageyama but made a beautiful bond with his team just to over work himself and get a fever and collapse during nationals leaving himself and his teammates heartbroken..... Then its presumed(and knowing Hinata)that in his 2-3rd years he worked his ass off in highschool hoping that a university would see potential in him to join a team to play professionally for that not to happen....?
    Then this boy, who was like 18 left all he knew in Japan (family, friend,etc) and moved to a different country by himself to follow his dreams all while learning a new language. In the pure pursuit of his dream, ignoring all the times he was told no because of his height.
    Hinata is so strong and for him to still be positive and kind. Through it all, be never let it make him bitter or give up on his dream. He kept pushing and pushing until he made a name for himself outside of his idol he wanted to replicate so badly. He never took someone down out of spite or to feel superior. He worked so hard to be in the Black Jackals, to play against Kageyama;to be his equal on the court! To keep playing and do what he loves even though realistically he was at a disadvantage.
    *He never blamed anyone or complained it wasn't fair he just kept fighting to force the world to make space for him! And he FUCKEN DID*

      This boy didn't gave up, even thought he lacked height and didn't knew how to play and now he became so damn strong, God i love Hinata!

    briliant video man, that was amasing. I enjoyed the slow-mo you added in, it worked really well to show stuff that might happen a bit quick for some people.
    also, I LOVED your build-up to Hinata's moment. I hadn't thought about how the team would have been feeling them couple of points, so thanks for showing me another new aspect to this tremendous match!
    I've been watching Aleczandxr's videos to get myself in the mood on my way to volleyball, so much that I've seen his atsumu video at least a dozen times... now I have someone else to watch too! I'm excited to have a look at more of your content, keep up the great work!

    My favorite moment is honestly where all of them are disparing on the bench and Hinata chimes in with a big smile saying that he would get the next one too. Then they all laugh and even the Miya twins realize how scary of an opponent they are facing. That's honestly what I love the most, through all his growth and hard work he has never let his team dispare and has always shown them that even if they don't think they can win they can trust him to keep going no matter the cost.

    Tsukishima’s yell S3E4 is my favorite scene, but S4E3 is my favorite episode. Shoyo’s revelation brought me back to the times when the sport you’re falling in love with just clicks with you and you start to notice all of the nuances you were ignorant to before. Following Hinata in that episode really does capture that actual moment unbelievably well by showing tiny ways you can adjust your game that pile up until you become something much more than you were. brb- going to go watch that episode again

      Thank God you went back! I’m already a first year in college when I started Haikyuu and I used to play volleyball back in highschool but I wasn’t good. Before 10th grade, I used to be recruited to volleyball because of my height and so I never really learned well and no one was there to coach me properly. In 10th grade I went to a great school and I got recruited again with volleyball but I was hesitant because I told them I wasn’t good enough but the coach was so kind she said that’s why we are here in school, to learn. So I joined and went to the practices everyday. But then we got a practice match with the school that has a great volleyball team, every player knows how to do overhand service and they scared us with their sharp spikes during warmup. I think after this practice game, I quit going to practices because during the game I kept getting switched out to the bench. I didn’t understand why I thought it was so unfair because we didn’t get to play fairly. So I quit volleyball for the duration of 10th grade after than because I felt crappy after not getting more time to play, I thought to myself I was treated unfairly and maybe I wasn’t just cut for it. The coach later tried to get me back again for a few times (she really likes my height) but I refused and just focused on my studies.
      But after watching Haikyuu I realized, I was being benched because I wasn’t good enough, that I just need more practice, that I just needed to show them that I’m cut to be in the court more. I didn’t know all of that and quit volleyball. After watching Haikyuu I felt heavy in my heart and I was full of regrets. Even during grade 11 I want to try out but I didn’t really practice in grade 10 so I didn’t try because I figured I won’t get in anyway. Haikyuu made me want to go back to highschool all over again and play volleyball. I felt really sad knowing if I practiced more, and if I sticked around more, I could’ve become a really good player because I really like volleyball.

    [[MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD]]
    Hinata truly has one of the best character developments I’ve ever seen. It’s very detailed and thoroughly thought out, containing many many details that would seem insignificant but is actually very important to his growth. The training camp arcs, specifically ball boy arc, and the Brazil arc especially, were very important to Hinata’s improvement both mentally and skill wise. The fans often disregard the real significance of the training camp arcs and the Brazil arc a lot because they either only care about seeing the other characters (training camp arc) or fawning over hinata’s glow up (Brazil arc). Despite being the main character, he’s undermined by the fans and treated like he doesn’t even exist. As a vb player myself who can relate to Hinata quite a lot and as a Hinata stan, I’m very happy to see people actually acknowledging and going into depth with how much Hinata has grown throughout the manga/anime. Great video, love it!

    • @HarshReviews
      @HarshReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly the Brazil arc is up there as one of the best training arcs for me, it’s just really well done and a great final step for hinata to take. Also, I’d like to request that if you mention manga spoilers to put a spoiler warning before the comment for those havent read it :) thanks for the comment I’m glad you enjoyed !

    Goddamn man what a beautiful Video...I got here from your Tanaka Ryuunosuke video which had me in tears and so did this one. I know exactly how you feel when you talk about how that moment with Tanaka shaped this fire of motivation within you as well because Haikyuu in and of itself is one show that pulled me out of a pit of despair itself. This was something that I had forgotten and as I began to once more reach a sort of downturn, you came back and reminded me of these two things...The fact that even an unbreakable character breaks and that even the underdog has to work and come back on top. Thank you for these beautiful videos...You reminded me that no matter how far down we get pushed, it's all about rising back up again. Thank you.

    First of all, I want to say you are only a handful of creators who truly look at characters in-depth, and at the same time produce a video that can convey to the audience of the character's depth as you did with this video of Hinata's progression. Truly nice to see and am looking forward to bingeing through the rest of your videos.
    Now the second point that I want to mention is that while I do believe that Hinata has really good progression, I personally think he's not the best in the genre of sports. That I would give to Sawamura, the protagonist from Diamond No Ace. So I was hoping to either hear your opinion on these characters through a simple comment or maybe even a video of an in-depth analysis of Diamond No Ace characters. I would love to see your perspective on it.
    P.S. you don't have to do what I requested since I know you probably live a busy life especially if you haven't read or watched Diamond no Ace. However, if you do have the time it would be much appreciated. Thx and once again keep up the good work. I can definitely see your channel blowing up.

    One thing I noticed while reading the manga was how earlier in the series most people did not care enough to learn Hinata's name. Instead they prompted to judge him by his appearance and call him 'chibi-chan' or smth. But later in the series almost every character started addressing him by his real name and not by his physical appearance. That just goes to show how much Hinata grew during the series.
