    Have only just gotten into gaming and the more modern style of games. Having a great time learning and playing new games. Today I played Arkham Horror the card game for the first time (!solo) but am looking forward to playing as a co op. First impression was Wow! So much so that I have now ordered Dunwich legacy and the expansions to go with that story. I looked at the expansions and instead of thinking I am too far behind I had the same feeling as watching a new tv show that I caught later in the day , that is , I have a load of content that I can already play .

    #72 Jaipur's popularity as it's one of the best gateway games to couples/two players AND it's small box. Not many games tick all three boxes and be great at the same time.

    What separates Isle of Skye from Carcassonne for me is the variable scoring (in addition to the price setting mechanism). I like Carcassonne but love Isle of Skye.

  • @mkitten13

    Isle of Skye over Carcassonne any day. Carcassonne is just luck of the draw and I'm so beyond tired of it. In Isle of Skye you have so many more choices, every tile could be good in one way or another, and even if you don't get them you get the price you set for them. I really like that.

    • @Steve-L
      @Steve-L 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Isle of Skye is my 24th favorite game. Is Carcassonne better? Not vanilla, but Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers is better at 15.

    • @mikatorvinen1047
      @mikatorvinen1047 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Youre playing it wrong. Try 3 tile variant. Makes carcassonne exponentially better experience.

    • @PyramidofGeezer
      @PyramidofGeezer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I taught a friend Isle of Skye recently and started by telling them it's like Carcassonne with bidding. They ended up telling me it's not like Carcassonne at all because of the solitaire map-building instead of shared map. He had a point.

    • @lastburning
      @lastburning 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Carcassonne is better because it has player interaction.

    • @mkitten13
      @mkitten13 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Perhaps a different version or a variant makes it better, but for me it's just not enough to fix the problem I have with the game. When you play enough times where your opponents draw most of the city tiles and you wind up with a bunch of roads (a 3 tile variant could mitigate it, but it could still end up with you choosing between a bunch of roads and your opponent between a bunch of city tiles), it just sucks any fun out of the game. And yeah, that means you could play the "blocking strategy", but that makes it even worse for me. I don't enjoy a mechanism that only functions to ruin it for another player rather than benefitting myself.
      I honestly don't care whether the map building is a common one or a separate one. What I really like about Isle of Skye which I feel Carcassonne just fails to do, it's that all tiles have the potential to be valuable. Either they work for the scoring objectives for the game, or you could obtain a scroll for it, or you could get money for it if an opponent really wants it. Whatever you draw, you can work with it. While in Carcassonne you almost always hope to *not* draw another road.
      And Isle of Skye has just as much player interaction, just a different one than Caracassonne. You are grabbing tiles under each other noses instead of edging in on each other's territories. You are pricing tiles with your opponents in mind, choosing which tile to axe with your opponents in mind. When you decide who to buy from, you don't just choose what tile to buy, but you also choose which player will gain more purchase power as they immediately get the money you pay and the money they themselves locked to that tile into their hand. So you might actually give that player the power to buy an even more valuable tile from you than you did from them.

    Zee: on Hanabi, you "got it" only if you make so many rules on how to place the cards and which hints to give in which order to fill up a 20 page manual (people did it!). Otherwise, it's reeeeally difficult to get top score with multicolors. Of course, it's really easy to win (I think I never lost), but that's not the point of the game ;) it's reaching 30 points without too many house rules (we just use the one about placement of the next card to discard)

  • @GrandElemental

    I'm happy that Mage Knight is still on the list, it's my all-time favourite game! =) Although Gloomhaven is definitely a strong challenger, they both have similar card combat system. I need to play it more before I know for certain where it lands.

    1 thing I will say about forbidden island...is just how cheap it is! I got it on sale for $10. I know a lot of people hate games in tins, but I don't...I'm a real sucker for tins lol. Plus the components are really nice for that price point. And it's not like it's a bad game. I've really had a lot of fun with it, and it's SUPER easy to teach to people who aren't really into gaming.
    For about $10 it's an absolute steal IMHO. Desert may be the better game, but it's twice as expensive too.

    Where Battlestar Galactica is concerned, there's a lot of speculation about whether FFG still has the license or not. There's no official statement either way, but it's been quietly disappearing off the FFG website, there are no new copies currently entering the production/distribution pipeline, and the response from an FFG spokesperson when asked directly about the game was that it's a licensed property, so...
    It's not officially dead but that's the most promising thing that can really be said about the game right now.

    I voted for Star Trek Frontiers.
    It's essentially the same game as Mage Knight (basically Mage Knight 2nd edition with a different theme) but unless you're a Star Trek fan I feel it's more likely that the theme of Mage Knight would appeal more so I would expect Mage Knight to always be more popular. Also if you already had Mage Knight there would be next to no reason to get the Star Trek version. In my eye the votes for these two should be one and the same and that's the way I see it.

  • @observationalobserver5274

    Hey Zee I have the answer to your question about why Betrayal at House on the Hill is still so high on this list (even though of what I've seen I think it's a really good game). It was played at one of Wil Wheaton's TableTop episodes as Shadows Over Camelot was. Also The Fury of Dracula was on the show 8 months ago. Many people such as myself have been introduced to the board gaming world by TableTop, but I think a big amount do not have the time or care too much to look for more. I also believe that many people who voted these games do not necessarily have them, since the show gives a pretty good picture of what it feels like playing them. I will continue to make notes about other TableTop games on this list that you seem like you could not understand why they were so popular. (The Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game was also on TableTop but you did not look impressed by its place)

  • @Bastian198181
    @Bastian198181 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm surprised with Zee continual hate on Betrayal, I share most tastes opinion with him. And when I was looking for a good horror theme game I bought this one after seeing his opinion on this game on two videos. It was top for Horror Games for Zee where he called it "this game is the halloween". It was 4th for Tom in Top 10 Horror Games and called the game decent.
    I share the opinion on every thing they complain about the game, but don't hate the game so much. I bough it a few months ago and have played it about 8 times (and got a few repeated escenarios). But I always play it with a horror theme sounds app on the speaker system that symcs with my hue lights for lights effects making the game more inmersive.
    As I say I understand the critics on the game mechanics, but no other game has ever given me the horror theme inmersion that this one gives me, it doesn't feel pasted at all, and where the theme feels like the most important part of the game above the mechanics.
    I would completely love to get a better game that can give me this horror inmersion, but until then it will always be among my top games (I really enjoy the theme). Maybe after playing it more it will get lower but I sadly play boardgames only once a week and having bough many games recently I don't think I will tired it down for a long time.
    By the way I also enjoy codenames, I think those two are the only ones where I really don't see eye to eye with Zee.

    Isle of Skye is my 24th favorite game. Is Carcassonne better? Not vanilla, but Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers is better at 15.
    Spyfall fell off my top 100, I got tired of it quickly although it is a favorite of my oldest son.
    Betrayal at House on the Hill is my 97th favorite game. I don't like gross horror nor do I like Cthulhu and this is pretty tame and enjoy it.
    Jamaica is 73rd favorite game, and yes I discovered it because of the Dice Tower. Its a great non-gamer game. My copy has bling.
    Bang! the dice game is my 75th favorite game and not yet a fan of the expansion, its good, but it lengthens the game
    Captain Sonar is my 48th game, and yes not one I would play regularly.
    Battlestar Galactica was on my top 100 but is too long for what it is.
    Shadows Over Camelot was one of very few games I couldn't decide if I liked or not with only 1 play. After 3 plays I found I was dissapointed. Sold my copy. I would play it again though.
    Tzolkin may be the 2nd heaviest game I like, but is not on my top 100, I would say its probably around 145.

      Sajatzsiraf I haven’t played the original but I have the Star Trek reskin and it’s a good game. I think the only thing it’s missing is a bit more theme to the encounters (all the encounters as are tokens with stats on them and no descriptions. It could really use flavor text or something to make the encounters stand out as actual scenarios or stories versus just numbers that you need to beat.)

    Are World of Yoho and Mansions of Madness 2nd Edition not Board Games because they have app components? Most definitely Jaipur is still a board game even though there is an app version of it out there.

    • @Bodyknock
      @Bodyknock 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      fr1skycat I think what Sam was getting at was how do you rate a game if it has a digital version that is significantly better than the standard tabletop version? For example, Sentinels of the Multiverse is a good game but can get very fiddly in how it handles damage modifiers and such. The digital version of the game is identical but because the computer handles refereeing all the arithmetic which is a really big improvement. So hypothetically someone who has only played the digital version might rate the game higher than someone who has only played the physical version.
      Another example is Galaxy Trucker. The digital version of Galaxy Trucker is amazing, not only does it include everything from the original game but it also has a massive very funny single player campaign that is a ton of fun. I can easily see someone who has only played the digital version loving the game compared to people who have just played the original tabletop game.
      So it’s not an issue of a game like Mansions of Madness that incorporates an app into the physical board game. It’s how do you handle it when there are essentially two versions of the same game, one physical and one digital, and the digital one has significant changes and improvements or extra content by comparison.

    • @friskygato
      @friskygato 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doug Rosengard IMHO, I would use the version I like best. Take Terra Mystica as an example. I absolutely love this board game, but hate the app. The app takes away all of the fun of planning and does the mental arithmetic for you. Ascension is an example where I think the converse is true and now whenever I think of the game, I think of the app version. Through the Ages is an example where I think the app is a great reproduction of the game, where it handles the fiddly aspects of the game without removing the board game aspects of the game. Thanks for the thoughtful reply.

    With this list you begin to see the (slight) disconnect between Board Game reviewer Top lists and board game players Top lists. Solid, well done games like Mage Knight remain talked about and played quite often, both solo and multiplayer. Just look on BGG or Reddit to see that. But BG Reviewers like the DT are "forced" to play so many new games, that they simply don't have the time or ability to keep playing a lot of older games. Sure, they have their old standbys like Pandemic, TI3/4, Cosmic Encounter... But with a game like Mage Knight that fills a very specific niche that has yet to be filled by another game, they can't believe how popular it is in the community. It's just a bit of a disconnect between those who can only buy/afford so many new games, and those who have access to virtually any board game being released.

      Wayne Hansen It’s not that they don’t like the game or don’t understand that it has a following, it’s that the game is a niche game that has fans that love it but a lot of other people who are luke warm to it or not interested. So to the game’s credit it’s impressive that it remains on the list despite not having as large a fanbase as more broadly popular and accessible games.

    I really like listening to Zee and Tom nerd out about why certain games are where they are on the list. But, you might as well send old grumpy butt Healy out for a food run during these.
    You can't compare Android to Arkham LCG. Competitive vs story driven co-op.
    The LotR LCG just released the last story box (6 of 6), which pushes it high up my list.
    Magic the Gathering has so many ways to play it. Only thinking of it as a tournament CCG is myopic.

    Betrayal is such a mess. The scenarios are hit or miss. I hated it, we had to keep going back to the booklets to sort out what each side needed to do and the storyline behind them is pretty meh. Also dont like the character disk slider things and the expansion didn’t add much. So overrated.

    • @nicksims2827
      @nicksims2827 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nao Shadowpaws It’s definitely a mess, but I can’t help liking it anyway. I think the theme really helps, I kind of look at it as a favourite old movie where you embrace its flaws (like the stormtrooper banging his head are Luke shouting Carrie instead of Leia etc).
      I think Zee said that the time of year they do this helps too - it would probably drop a few place if they ran this in June rather than October

    • @Bodyknock
      @Bodyknock 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheRmm1976 There are a lot of people that are ambivalent about Mage Knight as well, it’s definitely a bit of a niche game in that there are fans who LOVE the game but many others who are not interested in it. (Personally I have the Star Trek reskin and it’s ok but definitely not even close to my favorite game let alone being a game I like playing solo.)
