You had me at link takes no damage when landing on a Deku flower
The part that talks about TP Link being the Hero of Time's blood descendent is the greatest point in the whole video. Basically disproves the whole theory. Thank you so much Matt!

Another element that supports the Malon relationship theory is the geography of OoT and TP. If you look at the master Sword's location in both games it seems some time after OoT and MM, Hyrule Castle and Castle Town was abandoned and moved up north to a new rebuilt location but the location of Ordon Village is pretty close to where the Lon Lon Ranch would have been.
The way that the events of this game obviously stayed with Link for the rest of his life, and through to his death, is one of the things that gets me most on replays or while watching scenes. He might have made people happy or healed their sorrows, but he was never quite completely happy himself.
It would almost be kinder to have died before the events of the game.
I enjoy Game Theory and all of MatPat's channels, but this one theory is one I personally have disliked, due to it's many holes and the fact that I wouldn't want my favorite Zelda game to just be in some purgatory. This is also the best rebuttal theory I've heard. Great video!

Will And Dylan's Collabs I love majoras mask too, but making it be links purgatory would make it even much more intersting with the many clues hinting to the deep psychological phases! i think its very cool and hope its true! also, the fact that link falls on the deku flower is just part of his denial phase. If he saw, where he was falling, and that he dies, he wouldnt deny it. He dies in that dark whole and in purgatory thinks he didnt. Also, Termina isnt Clock Town, but the entire area! so if eiji aonuma said that termina means that clocktown is a terminal that wouldnt make sense, because clock town obviously is the supposed terminal of the people of all of termina!

I always felt like the existence of the Hero's Bow in Twilight Princess was good evidence that Link returned from Termina. TP references how that bow was left by a friend of the Gorons, which Hero of Time Link would have been after the Dodongo Cavern incident. I think it's a fair assumption that Link took the Hero's Bow and the other goodies he got from Termina back with him to Hyrule, which is when he eventually left the bow in the care of the Gorons.
For a while, I actually thought Termina was more along the lines of "Terminate" or "Termination" because of the situation with the moon...
I always loved to imagine Link and Malon as a couple as adults.

12:50 Malon seems more likely, because Link's other love interests (Saria, Ruto, Zelda) are sages, who are forbidden to marry, so that almost narrows it down.
Saria, Ruto and Zelda only became sages because of the evils that came upon Hyrule, so if Ganondorf didn't take over, they might not have been awoken.
Zelda and Ruto are both royalty, with Ruto being a ZORA. And Saria is a Kokiri. (Aren’t they forest spirits created by the Deku Tree?🤔)
Malon seems like the most logical choice.

+AwesomeFaceProd What if the Five Stages of Grief weren't about Link himself, but about someone else? Why does Navi simply goes away in the end of Ocarina of Time? Maybe she was about to die: she was exausted from battling and flying everywhere, but she didn't want Link to know that. She prefered Link to wonder forever than to be sad for her death. In his journeys, he discovered by another fairy, or the Deku tree, or someone that Navi had passed away.So his adventures in Termina ARE the Five Stages of Grief, but with him dealing with Navi's death. Poor Navi :'(

I don't think so fairys die when they reach their goals navis goal?Help link so after link went through everything she didn't want him to see her die so she simply flew away...This is sad because link doesn't know that and tries to search for her in the lost woods which leads to the vents of MM

I'll present my take on her disappearance: It's stated that she was supposed to have the hots for Link, while being jelly of Zelda. She could've thought she wasn't "good enough" for him or he was supposed to be with the princess, so she up and away. The ending of OOT could be a remnant of this.

You forgot to mention that in twilight princess after learning all the hidden moves. OoT Link tells TP Link "And do not falter my child...." so he just said again that TP link is his descendent

Link's going through the five stages of grief though, because he's looking for Navi.
I think he's going through those 5 stages because he couldn't accept Navis death! It just makes perfect sense imo.
I really enjoy this video and The Game Theory video. They are both fantastic perspectives and it shows just how well done Majora's Mask is. Also your walkthrough videos have helped me a great deal.

Here's my theory.
Link wanders into the Lost Woods for Navi, until he is knocked out by who the hell knows. While he's unconscious, he imagines the world of Termina, an embodiment of the Five Stages of Grief. Why is he grieving, you might ask?
*He is grieving for the lost of Navi*
Once he saves Termina, he wakes up, and goes back to Hyrule, getting over the past.
Also you could say Link felt dead inside, thus the Elegy of Emptiness.
AND MAYBE, JUST MAYBE...
Skull Kid is a representation of him if he does not let go of Navi.
Yeah, Link and Malon could be a great couple together since Zelda puts Link in the friends one.

But he cant because Zelda is a sage. Same with most other love interests from ocarina of time, ruto and saria.
Saria's also a forever-young forest child, while Ruto is a completely different species. No racism against Zoras, but I think it's safe to say that relationships like that would be frowned upon if not illegal.

I think Link is alive in Majora's Mask. But the adventure is his way of dealing with losing Navi....yes, the stages of grief are there, but it's for Navi. Even though we don't know if he ever found her, it's a way to deal with the possibility of him never finding her.
Malon is the most likely bride for OOT Link as he couldn't marry Ruto she was a sage nor Saria because kokiri don't ever grow up and stay young forever unless killed by sickness or wound. plus saria was also a sage. not Zelda because link in games set in the future of the timeline don't show him living as a prince so Malon is the only candidate.
there is a game that might have link as a prince. The CDI games.

AWESOME GAME HYPOTHESIS MATT! Man It took half a year but i think it was worth the wait for us subs, and yeah i believe this theory a lot more than the Game Theory of it. I truly believed that Link died from the fall off the tree, but it makes sense if he lands on the deku flower for him not to die, and that's what really pulled me in! Awesome Work dude!

But otherwise, good rebuttal! I always had my gripes with the theory, like how Link is seen running off into the distance with is trusty steed in somewhere that looks like the Lost Woods from the start of the game.

Although I was huge on MatPats theory this video was great in clarifying holes in it. Good job. One additional thing to think about is you said skull kid took his ocarina. Well if that's the case he could've teleported that way no?
Instead of stages of grief being about Links death, i think the stages of grief represented by each region of Termina reflects more on his lost of several people in his life at such a young age, and the morning of the time he can't return back too, forever wandering and carrying the heavy burden of his past, even after death, in TP.
Also the "we have the same people in Hyrule and Termina" line to prove Link's dead is not a good reason because they use the same design for Minish Cap NPC. Great video.

one thing that he forgot to mention is the last line line of text the the Hero's Shade tells the Hero of Twilight after learning the 7th Hidden Skill: "do not falter my child!"

The original Link from MM regretted not being recognized as a hero by the people (doesn't sound like Link at all), and then turned into a Stalfos which is only possible if you got lost in the Forbidden Woods. Nice ending for a hero. =o

Nintendo did confirm two things in an interview a while back. Link is not dead and Termina was not a dream.

I knew you watched Game Theory! I remember in your mario galaxy 2 playthrough you said something like "is mario really a hero?"
Most people also seem to forget this little fact:The hero of time was NEVER remembered by what he did against ganon because he went back in time,yet you find items of the "Hero" in TP. this would mean that MM Link would have returned, and most likely(my take on this) became not only a knight, but a well known hero. This would explain the gossip stone in OOT and why the Hero's bow and Tunic are both in TP.

To add to your side on the falling part, there is also the fact that you only take 1 heart of damage at most from fall damage. Link can't take fall damage in the beginning part, meaning that if he didn't fall on the deku leaf, he would still have 2 hearts left.

There is one thing you left out. Skull Kid from Majora's Mask is in Twilight Princess without the mask, bit if Link was dead when he defeated the mask, then Skull Kid would not appear without it. It would also still be present in the timeline, but isn't, as it was defeated by Link, making it nearly impossible for him to have been dead at that point in the game.

Great theory! Only one more thing... I think that epona was killed by skull kid as he said when he was flying after links fall. The other epona was there because it's a parallel world.
And other thing... The grief theory could work if the one who died was Navi as many speculated.
You made me happy and sad at the same time. Happy because you disproved the Link is dead theory and sad because of the Link x Malon, since I'm a big Zelink fan but I'm not too bummed over it.

The fact about link’s parents makes sense because he has brown hair like Malon and adult Links looks. Plus the kids from Twighlight princess are named malon and talon

Wow, thank you so much! I was honestly beginning to believe I was the only fan who didn't believe in that theory, based on these points. I never thought about some things, like the first three elegy statues having no pupils, or not losing any health when landing on a deku flower :O I mean, Matpat is a really cool guy, and an awesome theorist, but I felt like he ignored too many important things that were pretty obvious.
Also, I never really put much stock into the whole LinkxMalon thing. All "shipping" aside, I only ever felt people thought that because she was his only potential love interest that wasn't a sage, and thought it was fairly likely he could have married any other woman he came across during his travels. But that Epona's Song thing is pretty solid. I guess I could go with that.

Literally there’s one thing that can explain the elegy of emptiness statue and that’s well think about link dies a handful of times and has had his sprit sealed and transferred many times in different people
I like to mix theories to make one large timeline with in between things like a theory that Vortexxygaming made was that the stages of grief are not about link's death, but Navi's because of how when the fairies that heal you disappear when their purpose is fulfilled Navi's purpose was to guide link and at the end of the game her purpose was fulfilled

Well of course it's about the 5 stages of grief. The evidence is very clear about that. He starts the game looking for Navi and fails. He is grieving over his loss of her. I have to laugh that Matpat uses that as his evidence as they are the stages of grief, not the stages of death.
also in the remake (may be in the original not sure) after defeating bosses the giants make subtle hints at forgiving a friend

If that happened his bloodline would become that of royalty and making TP Link live the lifestyle of a prince and live in a castle most likely, and as mat, or awesomefaceprod said, they're living a farm lifestyle and would not have eponas song passed down as it holds no meaning to zelda.

Just to be sure, can The Hero of Time's tale be summed up as (incoming wall 'o text and spoilers for 10+ year old games); 1.After saving Hyrule, Link goes back in time then convicts 'dorf ensuring the events of OoT never happen BUT unknowingly starts the TP arc in return
2. Goes on a journey to find Navi (seriously why _did_ she leave??) but winds up saving the parallel world Termina[L] (while also getting a hands-on lesson of the Kubler Ross model) *without* dying
3. Returns to Hyrule claiming he saved a world but everyone thinks he is full of shit so he is stuck being hired as a knight while getting hitched with Best Girl Malon
4. Going back to point 1. On the day of 'Dorfs execution he somehow _still_ gets the Mcguffin from OoT (lulwut-how?) and escapes causing link to say "Told you so-"
5. Since nothing happened after that incident Link spent the rest of his life jobbing it up in a peaceful world filled with regret since no one believes any of the feats he did during his youth in alternate timelines/worlds.
6. He finally kicks the bucket but stays as a restless spirit (not a damn Stalfos) watching Hyrule as a forgotten guardian bidding his time for evil to rise again. If all that is true then the Hero of Time has _the_ most depressing story in a Nintendo game. Please feel free add corrections, 'cause I still see the Zelda timeline as a nebulus nightmare.
Someone needs to make either an OoT hack or TP hack where it takes place after Majora's Mask, but before TP, and you go through the events that made Link, the Hero's Shade. With his armor of course.

Uhm... this was very interesting, if a bit frustrating for me since I actually quite enjoy the thought of Link being dead on Majora's Mask. I don't really fathom why; it just makes things more interesting.

Majoras mask to me had some of the weirdest most interesting gameplay I’ve seen in a Zelda game but it’s also in my opinion one of the more challenging games in the series I love ocarina of time for a load of reasons it’s creepy, dark in a lot of places but also you can really feel the sadness and lonleness of the game even through the text
