    Zelda Theory: Is Link Dead In Majora's Mask? Link is not dead! Or at least, that's up to you to decide. Do you think Link is dead or is this theory debunked? There may not be a 100% fully concrete answer to the whether Link is dead or Link is alive (even though there is an overwhelming amount of evidence showing Link is not dead, which the Link is dead theory may be incapable of refuting.). Would I say this game theory is debunked? Well, let's just say the final judgement is from everyone who watches. From the straw poll, it shows the majority favour that Link is not dead instead of Link is dead. But from a personal view, I would say the Link is dead theory is fully debunked, again, this is just my personal view. I am of course aware that there was more evidence that points towards Link being alive some time after MatPat made his Link is dead theory video. To end on a positive note, the Link is dead theory certainly makes Majora's Mask feel darker than it already is. It is totally fine to still believe in the theory. If you see this, MatPat, I would love to hear your response =)

    2. How much time passes between the events of Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask?
    Sources such as Hyrule Historia (page 110), the official game manual and Nintendo Power magazines say that Majora's Mask tasks place "months" or "several months" after the events of Ocarina of Time.
    3. How much time passes between Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess?
    Answer: There was an interview with Eiji Aonuma where he states it's over 100 years. You can find the quote on several websites:
    "When does Twilight Princess take place?"
    Aonuma: "In the world of Ocarina of Time, a hundred and something years later".
    Also, I acknowledge this may be incorrect since this apparently was mistranslated according to others, but if anyone can prove if this is correct or incorrect, do comment below and I'll update the description!

    5. Do you think Nintendo may make another Zelda game with the Hero of Time?
    Answer: It's certainly possible! Nintendo hinted that the Happy Mask Salesman will return in a future Zelda game so it may be possible. Of course, it could just also be hinting at the Happy Mask Salesman being in another game like Breath of the Wild or a game even further in the future. The biggest give away to me is the fact that the Hero of Twilight is a blood descendant of the Hero of Time, meaning Link had to have lived long enough to have a child or children, thus meaning he didn't die in Majora's Mask.

    • @ogrebattler
      @ogrebattler 8 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      +Mr. Boo I would like to point out that it is possible, though distasteful, that child link could have produced children before becoming adult link. to cite one piece of possible evidence: there is atleast one girl from the Gerudo tribe that heavily hints at wanting to do adult things with child link in OOT. Which indicates to me that our society's sexual preferences maybe different then that of Hyrule's inhabitants.

      +ogrebattler
      This brings up a fun fact, in the Middle Ages, nobody had the concept of adolescence, all they had was child, and adult, and the difference between the two for them, was the onset of sexual maturity.
      Which means Link had to live to the point where he could physically have children.
      Since Hyrule is clearly inspired by Medieval Europe, they could have the same sort of system, where you were betrothed to a marry once you reached puberty.

      No because since the Hero's Shade is the Hero of Time that mean Link would of had to grow up to be that tall and die. Meaning if he died he would of at least been taller than a 17 ish Link from Twilight Princess. Young Link is only 9 years old.

    • @ogrebattler
      @ogrebattler 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      While that is true Mudkip971, the Hero of Time left hyrule after the events of OoT and died sometime after possibly before or after majora's mask. since we dont know for sure if after he left hyrule that he ever returned, I would assume that he had passed on the hero's line before he left.

    "Yeah, Navi is the only one who remembers and experienced the Hero of Time's adventure." I was really happy to see you mention this in the comments! It blows my mind how so many people hear about the stages of grief, and immediately jump from that to "Link is dead!" and completely jump over the fact that he has just lost his dear friend. Especially when the story exists because he has lost her, and was searching for her in the Lost Woods.
    THANK YOU! THANK YOU so much for this video. I know I'm late responding to it but, thank you nonetheless. You've earned a sub my friend, and I look forward to watching your other vids!

      There's another video that actually talks about Link accepting the fact that he is the hero and no one will ever remember what he did, and that was the struggle that he was going through. THAT was what he had to grow to accept, not his death. Unfortunately i cant remember who that video was from.

    Link was an orphan in _Ocarina of Time_. If he died in _Majora's Mask_, then that would be the end of his bloodline. Ergo no Link in _Twilight Princess_. One could make the argument that Link is a perpetually reincarnated hero, with each incarnation not having to be blood-related to the others. But then why isn't that the case with Zelda. She's born into the same bloodline, generation after generation.

    • @rocwelledwards5213
      @rocwelledwards5213 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      My question is, why is links bloodline so stuck on leaving their child to be an orphan who grows up to be a hero?

    • @Supaninjafication
      @Supaninjafication 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The Zeldas cannot be reincarnations of one another as there are two alive at the same time during Zelda and Zelda II. They are just blood relations.
      There is also no need to assume Link reincarnates just someone who possesses the spirit of the hero. Whether that is a soul or a virtue I can't say.

    • @ruyman90
      @ruyman90 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well there is a theory of how link from twilight princess could be blood related. Imagine you wake up in the morning and there is a bomb that destroys your neighborhood in the afternoon. Now let think that you returned in time by whatever means and stopped the bomb even before you waked up. If you were to do that you will create a time split right just like in zelda. Well a detail that many people seem to miss is that that will create 2 of you. You that returned in time and the other you who is still sleeping.
      The same happens with zelda. Link returns in time before he even met navi, stops ganondorf and go for more adventures but he left a link in the kokiri forest without a reason to become a hero that will likely grow become an adult and go look for a job (probably a rancher *wink*).
      That explains how could there be a descendant in twilight princess from link.

    • @Supaninjafication

    I like to think that Termina is Link's way of mourning his lost childhood friends and world, which is why everyone looks so similar and yet so nightmarish. Majora represents the darker side of Link's nature and his feelings of failure and loss incarnate, and when he finally frees Skull Kid and defeats Majora, he accepts and lets go of his guilt.

      All of the dead Link theory would had more volume if it was adult Link in the intro sequence of MM.
      Then Link married Malon, and searched for Navi whenever he had chance. And in his last journey in search for Navi in Lost Woods. Where he probably lost his right eye and became Stalfos ghost. And his mysterious disappearance would have triggered the twilight event. As without him Hyrule was vulnerable.

    Navi is dead. Once a fairy fulfills its purpose it vanishes. Navi couldn's bare for Link to see it so she fled. Majora's Mask is Link's Journey to accept that Navi is gone. That's why there is the Five Stages of Grief symbolism. Plus, the timeline states that TP Link is OoT/MM Link's descendant. If Link died as a child, how the hell could he have kids?

    it's fun to think about the theory of him being dead in MM; but if I've learned anything from LoZ, it's that the hero in green who bears the Triforce of courage never dies that easily. Or will ever let himself die that easily. Every reincarnation of Link, the hero in green, the boy in green clothes, the bearer of the Triforce of courage has earned that piece of the Triforce. I don't think the goddesses would bestow such a title, or even that "power" to someone would let themselves perish, or at least not go down without a fight. But hey that's just a theory, some asshole who's drunk theory!

      Whoah, whoah, whoah, Game Theory isn't saying "this is the truth!" it's putting forth an idea. It makes a claim, shows evidence for the claim, and leaves it up for debate. That is one line in comparison to an entire game. And again, Game Theory didn't said "this is the truth!" He put forth an idea and gave his reasoning for such.
      For all we know it could have meant that Link had just recently died and was still full of "life energy" compared to those in Ikana Canyon who had been dead for quite a long while. because he had yet to accept his death or something like that.
      But no one is saying "this is truth" it's just an interesting idea to make you look at the game a different way.
      The theory let me enjoy the game in a different mind set even though I always felt Link was not dead.

    Honestly you’ve convinced me. I’d really missed a lot of these details in the game and I honestly prefer an ending where he’s alive. It’s sweet and way less somber, he’s made new friends that he’ll remember forever and he’s done more great things. It seems to be a lot better. I mean Zelda makes him young again so he can live his life, it’d be sad if he just died right afterward. Would’ve made it all pointless.

    Without even watching the video, I have to agree that the Hero of Time did NOT die in Majora's Mask. Just look at the timeline. The next Link in the Child Timeline is the Hero of Twilight from Twilight Princess, and it's been confirmed several times that he is a blood decedent of the Hero of Time.
    Sooo, if Link was around the age of 10-12 in Majora's Mask, and he dies in that game, how does he have a decedent MANY years into the future?
    More likely, Link returned to Hyrule after the events of Majora's Mask ( though whether he returned as a child and grew up into an adult there, or returned as an adult after a LONG adventure is up in the air ), got married to some lucky woman ( possibly Malon, as she was the only girl left from his childhood who had legitimate feelings for him, the rest having turned into Sages ), had a child of his own, and then died afterwards, which would explain why he has a blood decedent in Twilight Princess, but he never got to pass on his skills to his next of kin ( or anybody for that matter ) before he perished.
    This also opens the possibility that the Hero of Time became a Knight of Hyrule, very similar to his father, and ended up meeting the same fate as his father: Killed in battle before his child could even know his name. Like father like son, as they say.
    I would pay a lot of money to see a new Zelda game that explains what happens between the events of Majora and TP, simply because there's so much room to tell a new story there.

      +BelatedGamer This is my main reason why I quitted watching Game Theory early. The theories are all good Wild Mass Guessings distilled into a short video, but there's something in the wording and voice that seems to convince the majority of people to automatically assume MatPat is an authority AND expert for such stuff.
      It's telling that this one video borders on being a scientific research, I'm not joking here. Meanwhile, Game Theory is... fascinating rambling (but still rambling) based on a few loose strings. But, to be honest, it's in our human nature to not question proofs for things we already believe in. It takes guts to look at those "proofs" in detail.

      To be honest, I did find Game Theories' thread interesting, but yeh, I find people accepting his theories without question and getting defensive against counter-theories to be a bit irritating too.

    Always hated that "theory". They were really stretching it with a lot of their points. It's surprising that theory even has to be disproven, considering evidence that it's all untrue can be found everywhere, like you said, from official guides to facts from other games. Great video!

      honestly i like Ben Drowned, and the Link is Dead Theories, but i know that link isn't dead. Ben Drowned is like a halloween story, and if you look at the production of MM it certainly had a halloween theme going into it: "is this real?" "is this fake?" "am i watching a horror movie?" "what's this game about?" Well you decide, because nintendo's game have one thing in common: "your decision." they always wanted people to give a theme or name to the character, and story, because it was all about players choice. While default his name is Link, Link is essentially a "Link" of heroes that fight evil prove the existece of good. Link's name could be Excaliber for all we know, because we choose the names of our character to represent a specific time and event.

  • @David_Axelord

    In the very beginning of Ocarina of Time, the Great Deku tree refers to the forest as "a barrier deterring outsiders and maintaining the order of the world." I think it's reasonable to think that the Lost Woods isn't simply a boundary between two countries, but rather a boundary between universes. The woods have been shown to have unusual spatial properties, such as multiple paths leading back to the same spot regardless of position or distance, as well as places in the woods that take Link to distant locations. Since the woods are able to apparently teleport Link within Hyrule, it isn't that much of a stretch to think they may be connected to other worlds as well.

    You also forgot to mention that Majora's Mask didn't need to be the 'one' who teleports Epona, because Skull Kid Majora's puppet, in all iterations including OOT & TP, possesses the ability to teleport. Even in the begging of Majora's Mask, Skull Kid appears out of nowhere implying that he either has the power of invisibility at his disposal, or the ability to teleport. To put it simple, Majora's mask could easily just tap into Skull Kid's powers to transport Epona to Termina.

    • @isabellat-g925
      @isabellat-g925 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Thulin-Gizzi伊安 You could also use clues that suggest communication and trade between Termina and Hyrule as evidence to support your theory. The first example of other characters coming and going from Termina is that Skull Kid is mentioned in Termina's lore, but then later appears in Hyrule during the events of Ocarina of Time. Furthermore, he enters Termina again via portal during the opening of Majora's Mask the game. The second example is that the Happy Mask Salesman follows Link into the portal as well, once again implying that the characters can travel to and from Termina. There is even more evidence that suggest that communication exist between the two worlds. In the game, the Goron who shares the Hero of Time's name claims to have traveled a long way from Goron City. Goron City does not appear to be present in Termina, but does exist in Hyrule. Lastly, one of the Gorons from Snowhead says that they get bombs from Dodongo's Cavern even though Dodongo's Cavern cannot be found in Termina.

    You really dedicated yourself to make sure that you provided stellar evidence and very thorough explanations for each and every point you make in this video. It really comes to show that matpat really did not put much research into his video and glossed over anything that would make his theory look incorrect.
    You, on the other hand, went far and beyond to make a video with incredibly strong points and no indication of being vague about your logic. I could easily see what your reasoning was behind every given debate, and you made sure to clear up any suspicion that the audience may have had in your argument.
    Your editing was absolutely amazing, as you gave perfect visuals that may have been hard to explain with just words. Not only that, but you showed every single piece of evidence you came across as well. You showed your audience that you were trying your absolute best to not misguide them, and damn, you did well. I was stunned with the amount of work you put into this, just, how the hell did you find the motivation to make this video so thorough?

      @Majoran.  8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +TheRealLink Ah, no I didn't take that comment offensively =p. I'm just very critical when it comes to theories. Matpat's theory is a good theory, it makes Majora's Mask feel darker than it already is. I won't stop someone from believing Link is dead since it's their choice =p It's just that it gets tiresome when some fans spread it around Majora's Mask videos calling it a fact when MatPat always says it's a theory. Doing counter-theories can be a good thing since it makes theorists think outside the box and look at theories from a different viewpoint. If MatPat saw my video, he may take into account to look at both sides to a theory, or inspire him to dive deeper to look for evidence. I do have another theory coming out soon (most probably later today).

    • @thereallink156

      +The One I'm thankful you didn't take that offensively. You did make me stop believing that link is dead, but don't worry, i'm kind of glad you did. Mat Pat's theory was so convincing it made me think that my favorite video game character was gone. It did add more darkness to majoras mask, but one of the reasons i like it is because its creepy/depressing and so lively at the same time. Having link be dead kind of made me feel different about majoras mask, and I didn't like it to be honest..... It must have just been me, but still was a solid theory. Your theory/counter theory however, made my love for majoras mask grow more since i saw mat pats theory. I also really can't wait for the next theory, but i am in a different country to which you are in most likely in America ( i'm just taking a guess) so I have to stay up late for this video. --------------------------------------------------------------------------*_Other possible evidence_*----------------------------------------------------------------------------:
    *This comment will get updated every time new evidence comes to light*
    *Ancient Hero* : I only remembered this a few months after making this video. The only reference of 'The Ancient Hero' in the entire Zelda Series is in Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Both are talking about the Hero of Time being the Ancient Hero. There is no other Zelda game that references another Link as 'Ancient Hero' (see 20:32) This means that it has to be the Hero of Time and not another Link that saved Hyrule after the events of Majora's Mask and before Twilight Princess.
    *EDIT* Breath of the Wild now mentions an ancient hero, but the ancient hero it references is the hero 10,000 years prior to the events of Breath of the Wild, which isn't the Hero of Time.
    *Hyrule Castle Gravestone* : 'The cursed swordsman sleeps before the sacred tree'. This might hint that the Hero of Time was buried in Hyrule Castle graveyard since he is a swordsman and is cursed with regret. The sacred tree can be a reference to him and the Great Deku Tree. We don't know if this is the Hero of Time's gravestone, as it may just be another cursed swordsman.
    *Wolf Howling Stones* : There is a song from Majora's Mask which the Hero of Twilight Link learns from the Wolf Howling Stones. This song is the Song of Healing which the Hero of Time Link learned from Termina. There are also other songs that we have not heard in Ocarina of Time or Majora's mask. This means that the Hero of Time Link must have learned these songs *after* his adventure in Termina.
    *Termina description on the official Zelda website* : If you go to Zelda.com and look for the description of Termina, it implies that the three golden Goddesses had accidentally created millions of alternate worlds when creating Hyrule. Termina was one of these alternate worlds. This can potentially prove Termina isn't a purgatory realm and that the Goddesses had no intention of creating Termina as a purgatory realm because Termina was created accidentally.
    *EDIT* Unfortunately, the link on Zelda.com to the description of Termina has either been changed or removed. You can still find the description on Termina on several other websites: _"When Hyrule was created by the three goddesses at the beginning of time, there were certain side effects of its creation which Din, Nayru and Farore did not anticipate. As the three holy women breathed life into the world and chased away Emptiness, their potent breath slipped through tiny cracks in the folds of space and created millions of alternate worlds in the process. One of these worlds became the land known as Termina."_
    *The Hero's Bow* : It is highly speculated that the Goron Mines is actually an extension of Dodongo’s Cavern from Ocarina of Time. If so, then it means Link would have placed the Hero's Bow there some time after the events of Ocarina of Time which would mean the Hero of Time was still alive after Majora's Mask. If this was a different Link, then the Hero's Shade wouldn't be teaching TP Link if he had already taught another Link the hidden skills before TP Link. EDIT: You can see my Hero's Bow theory here which can give more evidence that the Hero of Time was alive after Majora's Mask: th-cam.com/video/kaAbf4orq-g/w-d-xo.html
    *Malo and Talo* : In Twilight Princess in Ordon Village, there are two children with the names Malo and Talo, an obvious reference to Malon and Talon in Ocarina of Time. I see some possibilities with this. It may, in some way support that Link and Malon became lovers, or it may just be an easter egg. Also, I want to point out that even though there is evidence that can give us an educated guess that Link and Malon become lovers, it's still possible that Link and Malon never got together, and that they just simply lived in the same village.
    *King of Red Lions/Elegy of Emptiness resemblance* : As I showed in the video, Link's statue has blue pupils while the other statues have white/dead eyes. The same can actually be seen in Wind Waker. The boat that Link sails on, The King of Red Lions, has no pupils in the final cut scene of the game. The boat is lifeless by displaying white eyes. This only happens after Hyrule was completely washed away at the end of the game.
    *King of Red Lion's quote* : In Wind Waker, the King of Red Lions talks about the Hero of Time's journey: "When the Hero of Time was *called to embark on another journey* and left the land of Hyrule, he was separated from the elements that made him a hero". This might have been useful as the quote seems to imply that Link's Termina journey was destiny. However, this quote can mean more than one thing so we can't say for sure.
    *Tingle Tuner from The Wind Waker* : Another interesting thing in Wind Waker was the Tingle Tuner. This is because it would allow players to have access to a small story while in the Tower of the Gods about the Hero of Time and Tingle. This story is called _The Legend of the Fairy_ . It described the Hero of Time's adventure in Majora's Mask and how Tingle aided the Hero, which suggests further that Termina is a real place in the Zelda universe. However, this does have flaws since it would suggest that Tingle can somehow shift between timelines (Child and Adult). This was also taken out of the Wind Waker HD version, the updated version of the game, suggesting that the story is non-canon. However, this does show that Nintendo sees Link's Majora's Mask adventure within Termina as a real event that happened in the Zelda universe instead of purgatory.
    *The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask Collector's edition* : For anyone that has the physical copy of the Zelda collector's edition, you'll find on the back of the box for Majora's Mask that there is a description that further implies Link headed back to Hyrule after his adventure in Termina. _"Link embarks on an urgent quest to solve the mystery of the moon, save the world from descruction, and find his way back to the peaceful land of Hyrule!"_ You can check it out on this video to get the full view of the collector's edition from Nintendo Power and published by Nintendo of America: th-cam.com/video/XuqefDtV1NQ/w-d-xo.htmlm54s
    *Twilight Princess Nintendo Power guide* A Twilight Princess guide by Nintendo Power and published by Nintendo of America has an interesting detail about the Hero's Shade on page 43 of the guide:
    _"Over the course of your adventure, you'll have the opportunity to learn seven hidden skills from a golden wolf who transforms into a knight called the Hero's Spirit."._ This, once again, reiterates that the Hero of Time became a knight, suggesting even further that he didn't die within the events of Majora's Mask.
    *Timeline split* Another thing to wonder about is if Link died within the events of Majora's Mask, then shouldn't there be another timeline split? In a different universe, this same Link was defeated by Ganondorf which caused the Downfall Timeline. So going by this information, wouldn't the same happen again if Link died as a child in the Lost Woods?
    *Spaceworld 2000 GameCube Demo* : Nintendo were in the middle of making Majora's Mask and they had presented a demo demonstrating the GameCube's capabilities and potential upcoming games. In the Zelda part of the demo, it shows the Adult version of the Hero of Time with the Hero's Shield at the start of Majora's Mask. This could of been a clue that Nintendo were thinking of making another game with the Hero of Time after the events of Majora's Mask as the same Link is battling with Ganondorf again. This would have completely debunk Link is dead theory. However, this was just a demo, and may not be an actual concept for a game. Although, it did still inspire a sequel to Ocarina of Time as Wind Waker was the first Zelda game that came out on the GameCube.
    *Something to think about* : If Link really did die in Majora's Mask and Termina is purgatory, i.e: a place where souls go to be purified before moving on to the afterlife, why is the Hero's Shade still lingering in regrets? Surely, if purgatory is supposed to cleanse a soul, then Link would have no regrets after moving past the acceptance stage. This also raises the questions: How does Link grow into the Hero's Shade if he's dead? Where did he get the armor from? Why is his eye missing? How did he learn those techniques if he was dead? Link for most of his life grew up in Kokiri Forest, so why aren't the Great Deku Tree and the Kokiri there as part of Link's memories?

    • @TeesterX
      @TeesterX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You touch on an interesting point with the howling stones from TP. I had completely overlooked the fact that several songs are from separate timelines. For the songs to be both from MM and WW, the only logical possibility must be an origin dating from before the adult and child eras split. The fact that the Wind Waker itself is from old Hyrule adds weight to that theory.

      Link The Chosen One. Aonuma commented on this in an interview. Aonuma: "The best I can give you is just a suggestion. The best way to think about it is that the memories of all the people of Termina are inside of the Fierce Deity Mask."
      In the Prima Collector's guide for Majora's Mask, it says that the Fierce Deity is a youthful warrior of the gods. postimg.org/image/iff9k4qz9/

    I believe that link didn't die in that game and the main reason is because of the song of storms. If you look back at ocarina of time at no point does link learn this song. Instead he is taught the song. But then who taught the song to the guy in the windmill? Now we look to Majora's Mask. Link learns the song in this one. So in short I believe that he learned the song in this and at some point after he was done his quest he went back in time, taught the song to the guy in the windmill (he did say it was a kid dressed like you, even though in OofT you were not the one to teach him it, was the one who played it), then he taught future link, who went back in time and taught the windmill guy as young link, thus causing yet a out time line to be started (as link from Majora's Mask no longer needed to come to this time line to teach anyone the Song of Storms).......... And that's not a theory, it's a game theory. ;)

    • @MaxArceus
      @MaxArceus 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Colin McGrath Let's see, in the OOT you first hear the song in the windmill as a child, just as background music at that time. Though that guy is standing there, with his.. instrument. Later on when you come back as an adult, the background music in the mill is still the same, but now the dialogue strongly implies that the guy is making the music, he even teaches adult link the song. He'll say something like "I'll never forget that green clothed boy and that song that he played, it caused the windmill to spin out of control." When you travel back and forth, at some point as child Link, you need to play the song in his mill, and indeed will spin out of control, and drain the well. Which is the event the guy learned the song at, probably -since there's till that fact that he's already standing there, with his music box while the player hears the song the first time you even enter the mill.- In a sense, the song just manifested itself into existence in this time line.
      When you beat the game, the timeline gets reset. Link doesn't just travel through time now, he travels with the time, and gets reset, too. He now actually prevents Garondorf from ever gaining all that power, and then parts ways with everyone. Ending up in Termina. There he learns the song in the grave from the composer.
      Now a very speculative part. The composer is a ghost on a graveyard. In OOT, the mill is close by another graveyard, where there's also a composer buried, who looks the same. Maybe the mill guy learned the music from him, and Link learned it from the mill guy, and then the mill guy just repeats the music he already knew once he sees adult Link.

    I get a lot of emotions from Majora's Mask. I have seen The Game Theorists ideas and yours too. HERES MINE. I don't think Link is dead but i think that's on the right track. Link has not died but rather had a near death experience. he is not in purgatory but in a comatose state. everything is a fabrication of his mind and hence the reason why everybody has familiar faces. Majora's Mask is a direct sequel to ocarina in terms of the story line, so when link was weary from travel and drained from his last battle(beginning when hes searching for navi) the skull kid took advantage of his weakened state(which is why in Termina the skull kid is made to be the bad guy). link then passed out and him falling into the hole is him entering a coma. I also believe that each area in Termina is designed to be the five stages of grief. Denial is clock town. Anger is the Swamp area. bargaining is Snowhead. Depression is Geat Bay, and acceptance is Ikana canyon. now here's the twist. at the acceptance phase its not that Link is accepting his death but his will to live. link didn't want to live any more but at the acceptance phase he chooses life. this would also explain why link's stalfos teacher in Twilight Princess had some regrets. he walked away from being a hero. This also doesn't contradict the fact that Links teacher in Twilight Princess and the link from Majora's Mask are blood related.

    • @TeesterX
      @TeesterX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen a similar idea, but again, it does contradict the fact that there are new characters in Majora's Mask not seen in OOT.
      If you have solid supporting evidence of this theory, however, it would be interesting to see what you have.

    • @InfinityDz
      @InfinityDz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Kaneki Kun That's what my intuition tells me too. But I don't follow you about the DABDA stages; to me, you could see DABDA in any game you want if you're as sloppy as MatPat was about MM. However, the "Link is comatose" hypothesis would make sense of the final line when he dies "You've met with a terrible fate haven't you?".
      Maybe the 3-day cycle is the clock ticking away for Link to defeat his inner demons before they engulf him.
      However this hypothesis doesn't account for everything, such as the "friendship" side of the story (Link's supposed to be searching for a friend throughout the game, and the ending picture implies that he finally found one). I don't think a theory that completely shits on what the superficial story's actually saying is really compelling.

      +InfinityDz Wasn't trying to shit on anything. The grief stages honestly, that's what I like to think it's about but i know there no proof and that probably that's not what it is. +Kaneki Kun That theory would be true if Termina wasn't a parallel world to Hyrule.
      But it is. The official Zelda website calls it one, Hyrule Historia calls it one, official game guides call it one, and there's a lot of parallel worlds in Zelda including the Twilight Realm, Sacred Realm, Dark World, Lorule, and Subrosia.

    • @HaruhiDream5339
      @HaruhiDream5339 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TheCrimsonIdol987 That it is a parallel world is an undeniable fact. But what is a parallel world? it is any separate universe taking place in the zelda timeline. So why cant the fact that it is a parallel world stay true even if its a fictional one inside his head? If you ask me that still fits the description. I don't really care if my theory is right or not but what have noticed is the one flaw everyone seems to point out is that Termina is a parallel world. yes it is a parallel world but the circumstances wouldn't change if that world was inside links head. It would still be considered parallel.

    Thing is though, I prefer the "link is dead" story. Not because of "evidence" regarding that "theory", but because I feel it's a better story.
    First time I played the game was in 2001, maybe 2002. Since then I've come back to it a couple of times. To me it has always felt like a sad story. A story about friendship, loss and grief.
    Maybe a bit of melancholy is good for some souls and not for other. I for one like the concept of metaphorically coming to terms with your own demise as a game mechanic, even if it wasn't what the developers had in mind.

    This is honestly one of the best theory videos I've seen with sources to boot. You not only look at this as balanced and neutral as possible but you've provided insight within the lore of the Zelda series. I don't recall learning much from PBG nor MatPat aside from that these are merely theories and that what they interpreted the information felt a bit off. I'm glad that you looked not at just both sides of the argument but also provide factual information that gives ground for the counter-point to stand on. I would honestly consider MatPat's theory to be debunked at this point and it seems like he didn't do too much research or really think it through when it came to the video itself, not to bash the guy, but he doesn't seem to improve or even acknowledge any criticism or provide any links (pun unintended) to back up this information.
    I loved the video, gave it a like and it stands at 4 thousand and 20 likes, it's pretty dank at this point. I look forward to going through your other content soon, I am also surprised how well this video aged seeing that it's from 2015.

    I like to come back to this video from time to time because it‘s really interesting and really good.
    And while I‘m here I decided to tap on a couple things
    1.If Link was dead the whole story of Majora‘s Mask, it would absolutely ruin the story. Majora‘s Mask revolves around getting to know all the people in the town and how loveable the entire place is. It’s a journey of all these people with families and goals where Link has lost his friends and is looking for them while faced with someone else who loses his friends due to his own regretful actions. What once was Link looking for his friend became helping others get theirs back. (There’s more to be said about this theme but I won’t be the one to get into it.) if Link is dead and it isn‘t real than the original point dies with it and the new point isn’t interesting or engaging.
    Two:people keep being all happy about the Link x Malon thing so I just wanted to say that ever since Link‘s Awakening DX (not the remake on Switch) I thought Link and Malon were a thing due to Link‘s dream girl being Marin
    Obviously there‘s the name, but there‘s also the fact that they look a lot alike, they practically date, both Marin and Malon have music revolving around animals. I always considered Marin a stand-in for Malon.
    Could just be a me thing though.
    Edit:turns out it‘s not just a me thing, and I forgot her father‘s name was Tarin. He also looks like Mario, much like Malon‘s father, Talon.
    Marin and Tarin
    Malon and Talon
    I‘m just saying man.

    Just putting this out here now. Haven't even watched the video yet so don't know what your points will be yet, but I always hated the theory. Just too much doesn't make sense about it if you consider the hero's shade and his actual story that is given in game.
    It is confirmed that the hero's shade is OoT Link. And this is one of his quotes. "Although I accepted life as the hero, I could not convey the lessons of that life to those who came after. At last, I have eased those regrets." I'm pretty sure this is implying that he isn't a stalfos. That he is going through the same turmoil the gibdos were going through in Majora's Mask. That there was something he wanted to fulfill before he died, but never got to. As a result, he wasn't able to find rest. By learning all of his hidden arts, you are fulfilling his wishes and healing him just as he once healed others in an alternate dimension.
    And that's exactly where he was during MM. Not purgatory, just an alternate universe. He did not die falling down the rabbit hole, otherwise his ghost wouldn't be that of an adult.

    • @igetboredproductions
      @igetboredproductions 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, there's some other good points in this. I actually almost brought up the part about kids becoming Skull Kids, but part of me felt like that was false. I think there was a gossip stone in game that I remember saying it, but wasn't sure.
      And yup, my thoughts exactly on the hero's shade being a ghost.

    • @igetboredproductions
      @igetboredproductions 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Unknown Entity Why would his spirit be an adult if he died as a child? And look at all of the armor, the missing eye. He's been through some shit since we last saw him. And Nintendo did pretty much confirm that the Hero's Shade is OoT Link. And it's not like he turned into a stalfos. If he got lost in the woods as a child he would have become an imp like Skull Kid.

    Every month or so I'll come back to rewatch this video, not just because of how much I love Majora's Mask, but because of how well put together and lore based it is. After or while watching I'll usually go down and read comments, and while some are trolls, it never takes long to find one that says, "Nice vid, but I still think he's dead."
    Literally everything in this video up until late into it (where he clarifies, "This would mean going into another theory." Which even then, is based on plausible evidence from the series lore) is based entirely on game lore and is FACTUAL. Some of which even comes from the games creator himself. At this point in time there is zero, not a lot, not even a little, ZERO evidence that Link is dead in Majora's Mask. Every single point made by MatPat has been debunked, which means "Link is Dead" isn't even a theory at this point, it's a hypothesis. It can't stand up to even the slightest scrutiny.
    I'm not saying there's anything wrong with enjoying the Link is Dead "theory," but spreading it around as "legit" or factual doesn't help anyone. It's bunk.

And turning into a stalfos, but all the gaurds mention in Clock Town that they won't let kids pass unless accompanied by an adult or a weapon, and they try to stop you from leaving before they notice your sword, implying your a kid, and that if Link had been "lost" to the lost woods, he would have become a skull kid. But not because Link is dead, it's because all of Termina is grieving over their impending death (Grieving before someone even dies, just coming to terms with the fact that someone you love will die or is dying is very real, I have experienced it) Also, Link is grieving over losing Navi, the only one who stayed with him on his journey and knows he saved Hyrule.

    Yeah, Link isn't dead. Logically speaking and storywise it would make no sense. If Link died but met the Skullkid Majora before he fell down the hole, then it would imply that Majora and Skullkid are still around tormenting people. Storywise it's a plot hole that has never been resolved. Also, Link dying by falling in a hole is one of the lamest deaths a hero in a story should never have to suffer. The only explanation of Link being dead is if he died on Epona while searching for Navi. In other words he died off screen. But that is also quite ridiculous in its own way. Point is, Link isn't dead and you did some fine research.

  • @ricardolujan4791
    @ricardolujan4791 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    The One You are abslutely right... i agree with all your points. i mean.. when people say that Majora's mask has the 5 stages of grief they usually think that Link died in the first fall... but the kubler-ross model it fits in every situation that a person suffers a loss... In this case, we assume is Navi... And the hero of time being a Hylian knight, and not being remembered as a hero in his adventure against ganondorf and the theory that tells us about being malon' husband is the strongest point not only that Link is not dead in MM, but it proves that Link returned to Hyrule. The adventures of the hero of time were countless perhaps. i hope we have a game telling thos e adventures...... thanks for the video!!!good job man!!!

    Ive seen your original video of this (the one with no commentary). I really enjoyed your in depth analysis. Has mattpatt seen this video yet? Anyway, great video dude.

      I'm not sure if he has, I did put in my description that I would love to hear his response but nothing so far =/ I have found that MatPat did a livestream where he didn't respond too well to people debunking his theories and he lets the community deal with it rather than himself.

      Also...i just listened to the podcast linked in the description. It's funny how he never truly acknowledges facts discussed in nintendo and hyrule historia. The thing that annoys me is that he never uses game mechanics or dialogue covered in MM as well as by game developers. It feels as though he's grasping at straws. I must admit, before seeing your video, i too was a supporter of the link is dead theory. It's actually so funny that some of the facts you discuss in your theory can be found just by doing some research...something mattpatt neglected.

      Other than the Majora's Mask one being more colored, they're basically the same.
      *Points to the metal part of the TP's version* That could have been just added later point in the hero's trip, other than that, it's basically the exact same. Down to the branch pieces that weren't broken off.

      I know this comment is old, but these comments are a bit frustrating as they miss the whole point of game theory. That show is about fan theories. Not trying to prove something as the truth. That's why matpat emphasises that it's "Just a theory" at the end of every single video.

    • @leozar69
      @leozar69 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Garçon A theory that can be proven wrong, a theory that can be debunked, a theory that can make sense or no sense.. People judge examine and assess theories. A theory can be more than just a form of idea. Yeah it's just a theory - that people decide whether to see as truth or not, or appreciate or not. People are just free to judge theories. Man i could go on.. :P sorry

    • @Kabbaway
      @Kabbaway 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Garçon the catchphrase is contradicted by the strong wording of the rest of the theory. The problem is that MatPat's wording makes it very easily to perceive that he IS in fact trying to prove that something is true. This even goes as far as him constantly saying stuff like "I have the TRUE answer", "I have PROOF", "why this event was IMPOSSIBLE", "what this story had us believe was WRONG", I could go on endlessly. I've mentioned it before, but a single overused catchphrase copy and pasted onto the end of every video does not redeem the fact that he does project his work as if it is fact.

    • @Thedarkbunnyrabbit
      @Thedarkbunnyrabbit ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is old, but still kinda relevant. MatPat often and easily lets himself get blinded by running into a theory he thinks sounds cool and then selectively only looking at things that support it. Most infamously when he decided Sans was Nes, but you can also see it with his attempt at making Markiplier's ideal smashable pokemon. Mark gave smash or pass for every single pokemon and a fair amount of his reasoning behind each of those, and yet Matpat couldn't figure out a design as simple as 'give it long ladylike legs and big bazonkas', and thus totally whiffed it.

    Chuggaconroy came up with a better theory regarding Majora's Mask: That the game represents Link's stages of growth! Deku Link is very tiny, Link is a bit grown up, but still a child, Darmani is grown up and Mikau is entering a relationship! And then there's the Giant's Mask!
    To keep it short, it's much better than what those two jokers came up with!
    -_-

    • @lectordreadwood3273
      @lectordreadwood3273 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      that makes a lot of sense the Deku constantly looks sad like a child thrown into a cruel world, meanwhile Darmani was big and powerful, he was a warrior, and you'll notice how Zora Link doesn't have many attacks that are physical that's because Mikau was a lover not a fighter

      Haha I liked Matpat's theory too and find it perfectly plausible... However, I think "Link being alive and growing" is also plausible... I'm not sure what I think. I think Mat's theory was very convincing. One thing I will say though: the "terminal being a place where people come and go"... well technically, purgatory is a place where souls come and go too. At least, they're supposed to in some tellings of it. Either way though, there's nothing wrong at all with people having conflicting opinions. No need to yell or namecall, no matter what "side" you're on. ^^ Games are supposed to be for enjoyment after all.

    • @lectordreadwood3273
      @lectordreadwood3273 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Lady Tsuki I Respect your opinion and all but this debunked matt's theory six ways to sunday, how can you still say it's plausible when this guy brought up undeniable counter evidence

    • @LadyTsuki
      @LadyTsuki 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well perhaps "plausible" wasn't the right word in the face of the counter evidence... I'm just saying if you watch Mat's video first, you can kinda nod your head and go "yeah I could see that" but yeah, this does seem to have evidence to the contrary. But yeah my point was more that even if people are wrong with their theories or fans of certain youtubers, yelling at each other isn't great.

    something to note in the majora's mask thats worth looking in. Parallel world have symbol left by the gods (i.e the Triforce) evidence pointing towards lorule. Termina doesn't have one and if it did... it was usually mocked within stone tower in Ikana....

    It definitely makes sense to show different characters responding to tragedy in different ways - especially when telling a story that you want many different types of people to relate to in a meaningful way.
    A particular person may not relate to the way one character responds to the death of a loved one so including all five of the most common reactions is pretty much guaranteed to make every player resonate deeply with at least one of these characters.
