And I found this other piece of information by someone who was a friend of Dave Lombardo's that I met in Cali -- Dave Lombardo actually plays or played drums for the church choir.
i grew-up in the '80s when Slayer was very much underground, putting records out on small independant metal record labels. This kind of stuff was too extreme for the mainstream. Rick Rubin signed them to Def American Records in 1986 when he was still working with hip-hop artists and they were the first real extreme band to go major. The first record for Def American, "Reign in Blood" was crazy fast, short and extreme. Slayer were concerned it was too extreme, Rick Rubin said, "let it rip". I also didn't love "South of Heaven", the follow-up to "Reign in Blood". But there's no question that Slayer can tear it up when they get going. I prefer the earlier Slayer, the song "Chemical Warfare" is one of my favorites, but I also like "War Ensemble". Guitarist Jeff Hanneman wrote most of their lyrics, he was very much into darker themes. There's other good thrash metal stuff from this era, I really liked Nuclear Assault out of New York, their track "Critical Mass". which is about the environment, is interesting.

Big metal fan love slayer. Divine intervention is my favorite album. Great energy, philosophical lyrics and very low tuning. And a very speedy tempo. Them and metallica are the go to thrash metal bands. So many more but a good place to start for new comers. (If your interested) but I feel thrash is a good start for more heavy music. Mostly because its heavily influenced by hardcore punk which a lot of people love. Its basically a combination of the more melodic metals of the early 70s mixed with the early 80s hardcore punk scene at the time. A battle of the genres if you will.
They gave us the real hearing and visibly on what's going on....how you take it is our personal veiw. Slayer is the real deal. Beastie boys made a career with help from slayer.
