Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!
I appreciate you subscribing to my channel and liking my videos. You can also find me on Facebook borderviewfarms and on Instagram @borderviewfarms

So Brock did a good job getting things ready and since you’re a mean boss and won’t say it I will GOOD JOB Brock.😂
I did say thank you
@@BorderViewFarmswonder who put the tire on backwards tho😂
I’m not even a farmer, but I’m excited 😂
Loved the camera work while brock was driving. Need more running along side the planter shots. Lol
Wow ! A 1 hr stream , thank you for giving me an excellent reason to do absolutely nothing this morning. No joke keep them coming
Neighbors driving by.... "there's nutty bakers out there planting before the snow again"
More like, Mark's boy is at it again😂
Busy day for you. Thanks for filming most of it
Planting 2024 underway!! Awesomeness for sure. Good luck 🍀👍 this year. Harvest will be awesome this year for everyone just have that feeling for all farmers!!!
Appriciate
When watching midwestern channels, one thing that always makes me smile is "We haven't had rain in over a week". 😂
First day of early seeding. Exciting. Nice to get everything running smooth earth for a good planting season. Awesome.
I was never high tech just a planter monitor, marker arms, ink pen and notebook, I would have never got it all together to plant in less than a day like you did, great job
Great video! At 46:04 it looks like the tractor's rear tire spacing isn't the same.
Those planters are amazing machines thank for showing us. You are not old and damn sure not out of shape trust me I know what out of shape is.
climbing on that moving planter and giving us the mega-closeup shots is some proper Mike Mitchell stuff, love the dedication!!
-Glad I have rain this morning. I have time to watch.
-Get out the stick. My uncle would use a stick on the old tractors as his fuel gauge. That carried over to my cousin. None of his gauges ever worked. He would tease me because I'd only have a quarter tank. Then one day mine failed, and I replaced the sender. A week later, I caught him carrying his stick over to my tractor. He was mad because I snapped his trusty stick in half. I was mad and told him he was too lazy to climb on to turn the key on to check my gauge, ... that works.
-I was wondering if you were planting a mid or early 2?
3.0s
@@BorderViewFarms That suprises me. I've found short seasons will really push pods, and can out-preform later groups when planted early.
I’ll be honest when I saw that the video was about planting early beans. I was actually thinking that you were showing a video about planting beans last year. I was wrong and best video ever. 👍
It was a very good day! The video seemed to go by in five minutes. It was so interesting to see the entire BVFs team in action. Time to make some popcorn and watch again!
Congratulations on getting seed in the ground.
Thank you Nathan...beautiful video...the explanation part with you on the planter was awesome...and those plates turning..great job!!
Awesome 😎
Thanks for the 'action' planter footage. We did not have any air seeders and now I know how it works.
Have a blessed planting season
Love the videos!!!
Thanks for the video
Amazing photography of the seed operations. Thank you.
Everyone loves the 8RX but that 8R is a sweet tractor
Love it, March Beans. Great stuff Nathan.
Great moving video explaining everything
Missing you this morning, I really enjoy your videos.
Good job❤
Planter ride was awesome. I need to plant.
Great video
Great job of touring your seeder for us. Enjoyed
When you plant 500 acres in March then your in the big league's of high yield club. Baby steps
Great video, keep them coming.
Great teaching video. Loved the workings of the planter abd the setup..
Thanks for explaining how the planter works
Excellent job. Thanks. Keep it up. Congrats on getting started!
Border View Farms....Speedy Farming...So Fast Our Plows are Smokin'......👀👏👏👏👏🤣😆🙂🙃🙂😆
Morning!
Good morning Nathan from a snowy north Iowa, good to see the work getting underway, keep the videos coming.
My brother seeded wheat last week, now we have a foot of snow.
The longer video was awesome
Nothing like go time
Look at the smile lol
Good Morning
Good morning
you are very excited take a deep breath and relax
Awesome!!! Through it all in the ground 😂. Not really but after you did it 2 years ago I had to try last year March 28th.
Not going to get a why from me... GO GO GO
Excellent explanatory video with guidance about a wide range of targets for planting soya beans. Oh how i wish we have soils as dry as yours . Over here in the Midlands in the UK there are still many many acres still flooded with no fert or manure application on grassland, OSR, wheat or barley.
great action shots on the planter ... great footage.... guess you right how it feels with the bean planter which is a good size and nice planter and how a newer high speed planter for the corn makes that seem old school
A neighbor here in IL has does a few years of early march beans. Hes basically concluded that as long as your done planting beans by may 1 youll have good potential.
Hey, we have done an essentials kit and are planning on using a G5 for planting, if you haven't figured it out yet and plan on putting that screen back in, I believe that you can do a custom shortcut bar down on the bottom of the screen to get a master on/off switch for section control. Ours automatically popped up once I put in our planter.
The first video of yours that I saw was the where you spilled beans going down the road, I think I've seen every one since.
😂 Bet you were thinking "WTH is this lunatic doing " . Truth be told we probably all were .
Brock looks good in that rig.
Sure did fit up nice. Great video today, especially the ending. What does your dad and Phil think of your early planting ??
They're fine with. I probably did more than they are comfortable with but it's ok
Love the Content! Does Brock work EMS?
45:10 Cinematography lol hahahahaha OMG I speeled that rite!!! well I put FEE at the end changed it to phy and it red line went away lol hahaha
GOOD MORNING NATHAN AND CREW !!! this means you too!!!
LOVE JOY COMPASSION
Be interesting to see if they make 90bu. Or frost in April 4 in. Of snow.
For what do you use heavy steal closing wheels ?
Nathan. You may have already discussed this; compaction of 8RX vs 8R.
Care to offer some thoughts?
We hand planted some corn and beans on the 24th as an experiment
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Is your weather app working? But I do hope they make it tho. Get r done
That Landol does a nice job on the seed bed. Our soil is black loam and we zero till everything. How was the yield on the early beans you did 2 years ago?
Around 70
You answered my question. Lol. Thankyou.
So I’m commenting on this as soon as I heard it so you may answer it later in the video.
You said you don’t want to plant into cool wet soil but you are going to plant into cool soil and it’s going to rain later that night therefore it will be cool wet soil
The issue is running the planter through wet soils. Compaction and side wall smearing are very detrimental to yield and caused by planting in wet soil.
@@BorderViewFarms ok so it’s not an issue for the seed to be in cool wet soil
Suggestion: Take some of that cool planter video & edit it into a TH-cam short.
I see where inoculant is a gamble now, but would leftover be wasted on the second crop beans?
No I'll use it up there if I have some left.
time for a 60ft 15 inch high speed?
What variety did you plant to handle the cold soils???
GH3023XF
does your dad and phil know you are planting beans ? i am curious how early your dad and phil have planted beans ?
Cinematography 👍
If you fall off your gonna be in a world of hurt!
Lol
Hey nathan why do you have the planter center to the right?
Because it's a 32 row it requires a 7.5" offset to center the tractor
@@BorderViewFarms ok make sense
I thought you had everything ready to go when the planter left the shop, tire pressure, seed plates, etc.
No, we don't put plates in until it's time to go to the field and I didn't check tires then because it was February and I figured they would need checked again anyway.
Would the cultipacker work for rolling beans after planting as a cheaper option than a land roller
Probably not well. It's not as heavy and it has spikes that could do some damage to the beans
Its kinda crazy you are planting beans before you frost seed and sidedress wheat!
Nathan: Why when looking across the back of the row units are they not in alignment. I know the center units stick back for a reason but the ones either side of center don't align with one another?
A few rows have longer parallel arms to give more clearance to the tires
thankyou@@BorderViewFarms
Do you just put one shot of fertilizer on wheat or do you put another on in few weeks. And do you put fungicide it at flowering?
2 shots, and yes fungicide at flowering
@@BorderViewFarms thanks for the reply.
I hate back seat planters as much as I hate back seat drivers. You do what you think is right!
Next year, planting beans in February already? ;)
You need row cleaners on that planter
Your g5 didn’t come activated is your problem I had the same one. Mine came not activated. Why they leave the store not activated irritates me?
Do you use cover crops
Yes after we harvest wheat we have a clover cover crop
I would be concerned about the ground crusting with the length of time that seed will be underground is concerning
Yeah thats a concern. Hopefully we'll catch a rain at the right time.
How about instead of making Brock seem like an idiot by telling him that’s not 2” deep you teach him how to measure the depth🤦🏼 great boss you are
We havnt had a dry day in over a week.😡😩😭😭😭☘️🇮🇪
I am sure it will be Brock's fault if the Beans are in the 40's for yield.
Just plant... why run the disk when it's already disked...
I think the big reason would be to help warm and dry the soil up more since it's March not may. But it seems he wants the nice seed bed for some reason but I don't think it makes much difference in beans
Long video 😅
TO EARLY .
Great video
