I have moved from using 30% Olive oil to using 25% High Oleic Sunflower and 5% Olive. High Oleic Sunflower makes amazing soap, it has an even higher amount of oleic fatty acids than olive or avo. I recommend you try some high oleic, it is cheaper than olive, doesn't have to downside of short shelf life and gives a whiter bar than using EVOO
Thank you again Ellen! You are so generous, and not just by giving your recipes out but also by including your viewers and recognizing them/us. You do such a great job of making people feel included by replying to our comments, stating that you read them, and just making us feel like we are right there with you! You really are a pleasure to watch and listen to. Thabk you!
Sam's Club now carries a Sunflower/Olive Oil mix. It's 101 ounces for $13.98, and 80% Sunflower Oil 20% Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Works out to $0.14 a fluid ounce. I bought some to use not only for cooking but to make body butters and creams. Thank you for all your beautiful videos and the inspirations that you have given me. Have a lovely day!
Came here to say this. I have used the Sunflower/Olive oil mix at Sam’s Club to soap with. The sunflower oil is high oleic. It takes me a minute to work out the substitution math because it is an 80/20 mix, and I’m a fairly new soaper. I have had good success with it.
I generously spray the top of my soap with 99% Acohol(Amazon) as soon as I finish making it , and once more as soon as it evaporates a few hours later and I get a Shinny top every time.
This soap is beautiful. If you’re going to use sunflower or safflower oil be sure it’s high oleic. This fatty acid means it will not go rancid as quickly and is usually what you’ll find in the supermarket since this sits in your cupboard, it needs a longer shelf life. It’s also comedogenic. If your sunflower or safflower is high linoleic acid then it will be prone to rancidity quicker and to keep it fresh longer you could store it in the fridge. This one is considered non-comedogenic. I think most cosmetic ingredient suppliers have high oleic and will make the distinction if they don’t or have both types.
It’s a beautiful soap! I am using up to 40% HIGH OLEIC Sunflower oil in my soaps and love them. 8 months in with no issues. Using high oleic oil means you don’t have to worry about DOS.
I just came back from Cuba Ellen and my calamine soaps were so much appreciated along with the activated charcoal. Never made those together but that combo is a killer, beautiful and elegant and with a purpose ( not claims over here). Anyhow I was able to stock up on OO before the huge price increase , but I made a batch with 60% sunflower oil and I love it so much. It’s great and I am picky for my skin care ingredients but have to say, imo and for our extremely curly texture hair there is nothing better that works for us like canola oil. Also talking about “ not appreciated soaping oils, soy bean oil has the closest fatty acid composition to olive oil. So there is that. Regarding lather I am not going to bother you with a chemistry lesson but comes down to the fact that the manotón the water(liquid portion) evaporated and makes the lather improve. Thank you for another great video Elllen
I switched from olive oil and have it split between canola and sunflower oils. I have not had any issues with DOS, and have a nice creamy lather for my soaps. The trace for the most part is slower, most of the time depending on the FO, and allows me a lot of time to do designs
You are a blessing to me. I enjoy watching your videos. Your soaps are fabulous, beautiful and very creative. You are my inspiration. Thank you so much
Orange spots typically come up with Canola oil mostly. I don't consider those oils filler oils but they sure do have a bad wrap from "consumers"!! Ugggg They are still great to use!! Love those soaps Ellen!!❤
another beautiful soap, Ellen. thank you for addressing the DOS. I have some sunflower oil soaps curing now so I cannot wait to try them. Thank you for your generousity. I have learned so much from you.
This is a great video Ellen... I have been using Canola oil instead of olive oil and it makes a very creamy lather. It's a lot like shaving cream. Lush makes their soap with Canola.
That's a gorgeous bar of soap! My 12 year old Grandson came to me a couple months ago and asked me if we could make soap together. We started with melt and pour bases and he's about to take them to flea markets and craft fairs this weekend. He's super excited! I'm going to dabble in cold process soon but it looks super intimidating. I ❤watching all of your videos and made your luxurious bath tea recipe last week, and it's devine!
I made this!! Cut it today and it turned out so beautiful!! I added a bit of pink clay to make the calamine part a little more pink. Thankyou ER!! ( didn't do the piping part though, just swirled up the top)
Thank you for your instructional and inspirational videos, I love them! I’m new to cold process soap making, and your videos have helped me learn many things that a book can’t relay. Your soaps are beautiful and I enjoy listening and watching you create.THANK YOU!!
Currently waiting for my supplier to open so I can go get the items needed to make my own calamine powder. I'm going to make this with tea tree oil and see how it works out! I made a charcoal and tea tree oil soap that I've been told has helped a friend's skin and that makes me so happy to know. The calamine powder just might up my game!!!
I had a salt bar recipe move really slow on me when I used some sweet almond oil in it. I thought it was never going to hit trace because the one I had made previously, without the sweet almond oil, hit trace really fast. Definitely the sunflower oil could have had that effect. I picked some up to try in a few recipes. I'm going to give it a try, we'll see how it goes soon🤞
Gorgeous , love it!!❤. Actually Sunflower oil has a lot of benefits to the skin. And I have try it in my recipies lately in replace of olive oil and my soaps have not turned rancid or any orange spots, so far! I do use citric acid in my soaps ,since I have hard water, maybe that makes a difference in the ranciness. I only make soaps for my family and friends, nothing big . Thank you for another beautiful video!.
Ohhhhhh this turned out FANTASTIC!! I have not tried anything to substitute olive oil, but you have me ready to try!!! After even more time, please do drop a quick update on any DOS? I’m sure gonna try! Thank you so much for sharing!!
This soap is stunning! Now I want to experiment with some high-contrast color combos of my own. I guess I have a different perspective on the olive oil issue. I've just resigned myself to paying the higher price, but since I'm paying more anyway, I might as well experiment with other oils that I once thought were too expensive. Avocado oil is no longer that much more expensive in comparison, so I'm loving avocado oil right now. Yes, making soap is more expensive than it used to be, but I see the olive oil "crisis" as an opportunity to branch out and be a little braver. I've even found sales on some interesting oils, and I've been able to incorporate small amounts of moringa and morula oil into a couple of batches. They're low in linoleic and linolenic acids, so I don't worry about DOS. I can cut back in other areas of my life. I love soap-making enough to prioritize my joy. It can be a fairly expensive hobby if you let it, but I've always got gifts for every occasion. Silver linings and all that stuff. By the way, I've never used palm oil and don't plan to start. It's gratifying to see so many people start to move away from palm. Just as there is no such thing as "clean coal," there is no such thing as "responsible palm oil."
I have never seen a soap video of yours that wasn’t enjoyable! Have enjoyed your sharing, content and you personally have taught me so much! Crazy fun hobby and great gifts!
Good Day! I will agree with you in regard to the Olive Oil. I recently purchased from SAMS Club the 128 oz bottle of Sunflower Oil and Olive Oil blend and the cost was substantially less than the Olive Oil...you may want to check that particular oil blend out. It soaps very well. The Soap is beautiful! 😊😊😊
You are a blessing! I watch you and you really relax me. I have Lupus and many other autoimmune disorders and try to use natural products. You bring me happiness so thank you dearly! God bless you. ❤ Your voice is beautiful.
That is stunning!!!!! I love love love the color juxtaposition. For me it's perfect but, if you wanted to do a little happy for a ballerina: some little ballet slippers on top would be too cute.- maybe in silver or gold? Or pink icing with a pair of black slippers with just a light touch of barely there pink glitter. Oh my, I better slow down or I'll be in the soap shop designing.....LOL. You know, no one does soap for ballerinas or anything musical but, we have a ton of youngsters who do both. Have a wonderful day.
I find my bigger moulds un-mould easier than the smaller Amazon style ones. Freezing for a couple of hours helped me combat the dinging up of the edges xx
So beautiful! Thank you for sharing Ellen. I need to order some calamine powder, and I have to give your recipe a try without the Olive oil. I get 7 lbs pure olive at the soap store and it's $34 or $38 dollars (can't remember) but I am doing a blend these days to make the olive stretch because of the price. Coconut oil too! Thanks again, Many blessings ❤❤❤❤
I feel like that change in your lye amounts may be due to your other oils because sunflower oil and olive oil both have an SAP of 135 in soapcalc. That’s why the SO/OO blends work so well for soap making. I also agree with another commenter that the Sam’s blend is great, however, is unfortunately a limited run for them. I’m hoping that it’s been so popular that they get it back… 🤞🏻 Beautiful soap, as always!!!
Olive oil has been expensive where I live since long. It has been a year since I started to make soap. So I have been trying different recipes without olive oil. Canola oil is the best option for me. However, I do not recommend using canola oil more than 40% of the total oils. The recipes I use have been improving. The biggest problem is that butters are very expensive and i haven't been able to find palm oil and rice bran oil. So it is very hard for me to form a good soap. They turn out soft and they are very soluble in water so they wear out quickly. One of the soaps I made got DOS after about a year. Only a small percentage of cocoa butter and beeswax that I used significantly improved the quality of the soap. A high percentage of coconut oil worked well with a higher superfat with 10% castor. If you have rice bran oil than it is good substitute for olive oil.
Wow! I'm talking from Brazil and I've just found your channel. I just loved it. For sure I'll start following your channel. I've been learning Hot Process.

I'm so glad ya brought up DOS Ellen because I ran this recipe through SoapCalc and Linoleic/Linolenic was 38!! 😳 lol Once I switched it to High Oleic Sunflower it went down to 5. Since they say you should keep L/L below 15 I wanted to throw this out there for beginners. I've had DOS show up further down the road so it's probably safer to always use High Oleic or lower amounts if ya want to sell. ❤
What a beautiful bar of soap! Yes I love olive oil. It’s my absolute favourite (because of my sensitive skin) 😍 so great full for alternative. I’m great full to know people in certain places that can give me they’re discounts on olive oils. And I can give them discounts on silver and gold jewellery 😅lol

Hi Ellen! Thoroughly enjoying your videos. Since you are soapibg on a smaller level (2 pound molds). Can you do a video on milk and honey in a smaller mold for us smaller mold crafters?
I love your videos and I try your recipies. Thank you so much. My experience is not good for sunflower oil. It makes yellow points on the soap bar in a few months. Hope your recipe works better then mine. Does yellow points bad? I do not thinks so. I saw same yellow points when I used daphne seed oil.
I read that sunflower oil goes rancid much quicker so it's better to use a small amount of sunflower oil in CP soap (under 10%) to prevent DOS. I think the issue is only if one wants the soap to last longer than a few years. Have you experienced differently with sunflower oil? Or do you just go through it quickly? I'd love to use sunflower oil! Love your channel : )
That's a really good point for longer lasting soaps... We use it up pretty quickly around here, so I haven't had one with sunflower for more than a year or 2.

And yes ellen, Citrus and sunflower do slow down trace but any other would thicken just like olive oil

You can use high oleic sunflower oil and avoid the DOS problem. That might not be as readily available, but soapmaking supply houses carry it.
When you use diluted sugar water, at what point do you add it? Is it with the lye solution? Or with the water before adding the lye granules?
Always dissolve the sugar in water before adding the lye. I just stir it in the cool water until it's all gone, then add the lye.
i need an online course lol! so nice!

Thank you! 😊
So precious 💞👍
What a beautiful soap🥰
Thank you! 😊
Hi Ellen! It’s Marcie from Country View! Looking great!!!
Hi Marcie! Thanks🖤
When using soap calc, calculate the ratio of linoleic acid divided by the total fatty acids. You want to stay below 15% to avoid DOS. 💕
Beautiful!
Have you used your soaps for your hair or made shampoo soaps? Or conditioner bars?
She has a video for conditioner bars. I made some a number of months back and they are spectacular!
I have used it for shampoo, but with hard water CP soap can cause a bit of build up over time.
Here's the conditioner bar video: th-cam.com/video/fouQPIMN3HY/w-d-xo.html
@@EllenRuthSoap do you recommend any Cp recipe over another for shampooing? Or certain oils over another?
I love your channel, and all you have to say...❤ thank you for sharing ...
