Your comments about the swinginess and inherent difficulty in the game system are absolutely fair and I'd probably do that differently if I were to rewrite it now but I loved hearing your optimistic take on it!
I started with the third book in the series as it was chosen for a gamebook-reading club. I enjoyed it but thought I had probably missed something by not having reading the previous books. I do plan to read the whole series.
