Hair pins were some of the most ancient ways of tying up one's hair. A simple stick. And it often known later to show one's status in society, depending on the material of the hair pin. Gold, silver, gemstones, carved ivory, wood, metal, etc used to be used. India also has had used these hairpins since ancient times and are still used.

When I forget about taking my hairband from home, I usually just break a stick from the tree and tie my hair with it. People look at me mortified, but hey, my comfort and cooling my body is more important heh

(Like what are they made of) bcuz I’ve been using them for a few years now, my hair is just past my butt so there’s a lot of it and I’ve been buying mine from Shein. They have a ton! They have some that are plastic and some that are metal, good quality and really pretty too. I have both the plastic one and metal ones and haven’t had one break yet. The plastic ones you get 2 for like $1.50 and they’re thicker than the metal ones, I even tried to break it with my hand and it’s not breaking.

Was it metal? a lot of metal or wooden ones tend to break, especially if you have thicker or more dense hair. Cheap material, I assume. I've found that either horn or bone hair sticks are way more durable.

I have had European, Japanese and Indonesian hairpins break. Some metals are too soft, they bend first, and then break off. Hairpins made of lacquer, wood, plastic, horn, can break too. I now prefer steel or aluminium, sofar they are unbreakable.
