i find it remarkable that Prokofiev's prodigy like rise as a composer was also due to his maturity and progressive nature
very few prodigy composers at a young age find their voice (chopin, scriabin at times, mendy, etc) but prokofiev by his 2nd opus has found a textural discovery but a harmonic color unique to his own (not as solid and strongly identifiable as later works but still remarkable)

I read somewhere else that Rimsky-Korsakov made a comment on his early work stating that he found Prokofiev talented but “inmature”. Do you understand why he might’ve thought that way? Does it have to do with Prokofiev’s sarcastic nature?

i dont believe anybody can even play the nightmare of third etude with complete accuracy, every line voiced with complete precision, making it sound thunderous, stout, but also graceful and elegant at the same time. the fact that recording exists is insane and i will never understand how it came to be

I find the passage at 8:35 particularly impressive in that regard. The way Favorin is able to keep everything clear in both hands while maintaining his base tempo is a real feat.
