Sergei Prokofiev - 4 Etudes, Op. 2 (Chiu) (1909)

  • The first etude start with a bombastic theme accompanied by a relentless stream of chords, followed by a contrasting, carefree theme. The rest of the piece is the struggling between these 2 themes.
    The second etude features complex polyrhythms and counterpoint disguised in simple, melancholic themes.
    The tempo marking "Andante semplice" of the third etude is indeed misleading, as the piece soon transformed into motoric streams of double thirds. It is worth mentioning that Prokofiev didn't play this etude in the premiere concert.
    The fourth etude is jazzy and dark with relentless energy, similar to Suggestion Diabolique.

    The first one really has this futuristic sound to it. The second seems like a twisted take on some Czerny, the third a falling nightmare, the finale seems like a cursed, russian, pre-jazz take on a Boogie Woogie.

      There’s some pianists like that who stand out nowadays, e.g. Alexander Malofeev. Age 19 and has already played many of Rachmaninoff’s key works with the kind of sensitivity that only comes with age, and all of that at 19. In my mind he’s amazing.

    I’m kinda surprised these aren’t more popular competition repertoire by now, audiences and judges love Prok and this set isn’t hard to warm up to imho. I guess it might be hard to program maybe if there were twice as many or something.

    • @John-wr8lj
      @John-wr8lj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, it was popular in just one competition. In Tchaikovsky competition, all the competitors that played this opus moved to the next round. This is extremely suspicious because they were all Russian and Chinese and this is a really obscure work. It's really not liked in other competitions due to being early opus and as you pointed out, brevity.

    • @simonvaughan6017
      @simonvaughan6017 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They are recorded surprisingly seldom, given their quality. Despite the low opus number, they are pure Prokofiev and belong with the Toccata, the _Sarcasms_ and the _Visions_ _fugitives_ among his best early piano compositions.

    The last etude sounds like the end of Busoni Chopin variations !Russia has always been full of brilliant pianists and they udsually compose ! The first piece here is so immature I found it in my 20's and even then I recognized its brashness as immature . Stravinsky or Bartok early etude sets are thinking mature works . It's like a funny parody of Liszt and Chopin meet Scriabin and Debussy. As a pianist (and this is my opinion), I can't make a case for anyone playing these, except for the purpose of cataloguing. Only the 3rd really stood out to me as Prokofiev trying to do something different. The other 3 are pretty bland in comparison to other early works by Prokofiev, including even his Op.1, composed at 16.
