Hi! I'm Taylor Calmus, a Colorado-based actor/comedian. I started Dude Dad© two weeks before my son Theo was born as a way to stay creative while learning to be a father. My wife Heidi and I now have 3 kids and over 300+ videos. My purpose for the channel is to entertain, enlighten and inspire.

my favorite memory as a kid is having a flat tire on the trailer . While my dad replaced the tire I sat in my lawn chair and umbrella with my juice box and waved to everyone going by on i90. 😂 good times

We just got back from HT reservoir a couple weeks ago with a rental. . Imagine my surprise when I send this to my husband( cause we are literally discussing buying one since then, and it made me chuckle) & he spots US in our spot in the background!!! It's the big brown bus😜 He was like," I saw them filming but thought maybe they were vlogging!" ( but couldn't understand why you would need such a big boom looking mic)🤣😆

The best day was when we sold our camper trailer. Why? Well after my family of 5 lived in it for 20 months while our house was remodeled after Hurricane Laura destroyed it, the sale meant we were really done with that stage of our life. We had wanted to start camping before the hurricane and after, we never wanted to set foot in a camper. The retired couple who bought it were happy and so were we. It served us well and paid off our van so it was awesome!
My best friend lived in a camper while her key's home was repaired after Irma. I can't get her to even consider an RV now to travel with me. It's so sad.

Bought a van in 2019, definitely totally unaware of what to look out for. Within two years almost everything broke down. It’s been probably already 5-7k in repairs only. New tires, that’s a thousand. Solar panels. New wiring. Roof window wasn’t sealed so had to replace it entirely and remove all the mold. We are still romanticizing about the trips we could do as a family with our daughter, that’s why we aren’t selling it (yet). But it’s been definitely a total waste of money!

The fact that the owner's wife kept the car running while they were talking about the RV should have been their first clue. 🙂 By the way does the mechanic have a brother who owns a marine store?

As someone who sells RVs there’s a saying in our industry, “RV’s are good for selling, not buying” 😂
This is almost scary. My wife and I have been working on a used rv and I had to drop it off last week because we found out the AC and fridge weren’t working. Paid the repair guy… $1k to fix it. It’s like they know my life. Again scary.
Run while you can....we've owned 3 and it only gets worse!!!😂😂😂
As previous full time RVers, this was spot on 😂 One of our biggest mistakes was not pushing in the black tank lever after flushing it. Then when we went to dump the next time we got a nice surprise. 🤷♀️🤦♀️ It was a great day when we sold our 5th wheel and moving into a house again.

When I was little my parents rented an RV to go up to Canada on fishing vacations. I loved it so much that one year the night before we were set to go I just went out to that RV and sat in it, nothing else. Just happily sat in the RV.
Seems like the perfect thing to rent rather than buy.

@@alexh4935 Really depends. If you are only going to use it 11 days a year, like the majority of people then definitely rent. But if you want to actually travel for months at a time it will definitely pay to buy one. My RV has paid for itself many times over. It's so much cheaper and more comfortable than hotel rooms. And my little doggy can be with me without any hassles!
I LOVE this. You guys are absolutely hilarious!!! This is so true, but you forgot steps 7- infinity. Buy a different RV and then brand new RV and then bigger and better RVs FOREVER! Hahaha! Much love from SD. 😊
Omg yes, we had one and the sleeps 7... we had a tent trailer, kids in middle with all the tables and bench down for beds, one couple on one end another on the other....kiddos sleeping us adults go to bed.. we didnt have the trailer on even enough ground and the whole side tipped.....good times
@@lisam8044oh no!!!! Our first camper was a very small travel trailer with no slides. Our bed was a Murphy bed/couch, the table turned into a bed that we put the pack and play on the base for the baby and the other kids had little bunks. Unfortunately on our first trip out the 6 and 8 year olds got the stomach flu and the stupid fuzzy bunk covers didn’t come off to wash. We had to scrub them off with bleach and dry them outside. The poor l kids didn’t feel well but wanted out of the camper so we bundled them up in sweatshirts and blankets and sat them in camp chairs in the sunshine. Not fun at the time, but they are memories you don’t forget!!! Haha!

This is hilarious! We bought a used trailer a couple years ago. There was a dumb shoe rack bolted to the floor next to the bed. I thought that was a terrible place for it so I decided to remove it. Thats when I found the huge hole in the floor 🤦♀️😄
Yep....us tooo....the plumbing overflow job that was concealed until the furnace was on for awhile....urgent care visit for breathing issues!!!😂😂😂😂
As someone who travels fulltime with our family of 5 in a 5th wheel, this hits too close to home 😂.

Hmmm, this is how I felt about boats, but my RV 🥰😍💓💯. Not having to sleep in someone else's used bed is HUGE, the $ you save by making some of your meals during vacation is HUGE (not all, you are on vacation, just some). The community and nice people in an RV park is amazing, nearly everyone is friendly and instantly your friend. Beats staying in a hotel 100 different ways!
This was the comment I was looking for and agree with. My wife loves have here bathroom move with her, including her bed.
Your own toilet is worth every penny!
Bought a perfectly good 1988 chevy-powered motorhome for $750 at an estate sale. I spent a total of $100 fixing a couple little things, and I ended up replacing one of the already almost new solar panel batteries for $150 so I'm still under $1,000 all in. I've been living in it for the last 3 years and I drive it everywhere every day and I've never had a single problem, it runs and drives like it's brand new. They don't build them like they used to. Buy an 80s or older model and you'll never have to fix a thing. They were built to last. Now they're made out of cardboard Staples and plastic parts. Buy something in the 80s or the 70s models and you'll be driving it everyday with zero issues

You're definitely not a mechanic. Buy something 40 to 50 years old you won't have a problem he says. Cheese and rice my guy... That's the most "I won the lottery, you can too!" dumpster fire advice I've heard in a long time.
Your lucky, please don’t encourage people to think they would be as lucky with an old motor home.

😂 that’s hilarious (laughs in 82 dodge van with new transmission that still leaks, ignition system, driveshaft, swing arms, etc.) only paid 3k but doubled it in maintenance. Your experience isn’t universal, that’s for sure
We totally did exactly this. 30,000 miles and 40 states later, we’re glad we did.

So true! But we love the advantages so much so that we lived & traveled full-time in our 36' motorhome (towing a small truck behind) for 12 years! We finally got to rhe point of " that will be 1k -" actually make that 3k is average! So we found our forever home here in Kentucky and gave up that lifestyle. It was fun and was worth it for us!
We had three years of bliss, then everything started breaking, then my husband started asking me every other month if I wanted to sell it. We still have it, and I love it, but it absolutely has it's ups and downs.
We bought a new 5th wheel and had it for 2 years. It was fun and then our 3 kids started sports/gymnastics and we rarely had time to take it out anymore. It became a very expensive driveway decoration so we sold it.
I LOVE mine. The main time I was almost done with it was when the sunroof in the bathroom sprung a leak that proved difficult to fix. Suddenly the RV didn't feel safe and secure anymore. But, it's fine again and back to being my happy place.
Sadly, issues usually follow the new one too. The reverse drive off 👌🤣

This was pretty much my exact experience. Plus, on the way home from buying it I got pulled over as it had expired tabs. But I used to work for the Burning Man festival on their setup and teardown crew. If that old RV could talk...you'd be speechless.
Yellowstone, Yosemite, Quebec, Panama City... lol quite an itinerary😂
LOL, yup. Romanticized about living on the open road 2 years ago. Still do actually, but we settled on a travel trailer (no motor to go bad and we can drive away from campsite with the truck), and we mostly do state parks. One big trip a year though.

So much truth to this! We actually did that exact thing, I quit my job, we sold our home, and moved into an RV with our family of 7 (two children with non-verbal autism) to go and visit all the National Parks. It was an amazing adventure but a lot of work, and we also had many issues. We were laughing hysterically with your "that will be a $1,000" as it can be costly as well. :) Awesome job.
We bought a like new 2019 Scamp. Love it but on our last trip, we had 3 close calls of death and just went through stage 5 of fixing things. Thankfully the RV place didn't cost us about a thousand for everything, RV Payette in Idaho are amazing and really helped my family out.

Best thing about RV resale value in 2022 we bought an RV in 2019 for $24k sold it in 2022 for $20k so we basically rented it for 3 years for $4k and we sold it to camping world.. they resold it for $35k
Something doesn't feel right about the math there... I thought the used car market was bad, never thought itd effect RVs
You bought an RV manufactured before covid and that makes a difference. Not sure if the one you bought was also a 2019 but the quality of RV's manufactured in the past few years has gone downhill. One couple bought an RV at the beginning of 2020 and sold it a year later for more than they paid. Camping World, sad to say, is among the worst RV dealerships.
We were completely shocked by the experience. RV resales were hot in 2022. The RV we bought was used bc they guy who bought it new in 2019 used it one weekend didn’t like the configuration then had to sell it so we got lucky and got a “used” rv for way less than it was when he bought it. Believe it or not it’s a true story.

This was almost my exact RV experience, except I didn't get the satisfaction of dumping mine on some other poor unsuspecting schlub cuz one day it just caught fire and burned to the ground...lol
I work forva portable restroom company. How much i learned about RVs from this job is unbelievable! They are a pain sometimes but they can be alot of fun
Back in the early 80s, my parents got a new Coleman Pop-up. Immediately after, a piece of hail went through the roof. They had to replace the whole roof.
But I have so many childhood memories from then.

We are 100% this family haha. Swore we'd never own an RV cause it's cheating... then... we full time RVd through the states (we're Canadian) with our 4 kids, slept in 28 states, drove through a bunch more.... did yellowstone, yosemite, joshuatree, the Appalachian mountains AND SO MUCH MORE. Still own the RV 😂

My first camper experience is when my now father-in-law’s RV broke down while we were mid turn on a road right outside of Sturgis, SD during the ralley. We had all kinds of angry bikers flipping us off and saying all kinds of things, like we had just decided to just stop and get out and look around in the middle of an intersection. Scary at the time, but hilarious now. Haha!
I bought a used RV and it broke down partway on the grass in my condo's entrance. The manager literally yelled at me and said I wasn't allowed to park there. I explained I was broken down and she said "well you can't break down HERE!"
As a mechanic who dose allot work on campers it never fails we get someone come in who “got a great deal just need to be looked over” it’s going to be about double what they payed for it to get it road worthy

This was great my dad was downsizing and and offered me his rv and I was like no thanks. I just remembered the price for tires and breaks when he bought it.
Not to mention never being able to find parking unless he towed a car behind him. With him Getting blown all over the road I think you about got it all covered!

This is why I do my own work, especially when renting it out, if something is broke I don't have 90 days to wait.
Don't buy an rv...Rent one! Because you may use it 3 times in a year if that and it just wouldn't be worth it. As it sits there just waiting to be used it is going to need maintenance.

Haha! We once bought a motorhome for $1000 (very similar to the one you got but much older) and we thought we would fix it up. It was previously owned by a single mom and her two teenage daughters. Black water tank had all kinds of “do not flush” products in it. That should have been our first clue that we were in trouble. Started to “remodel” the inside and discovered major water damage. Gutted the entire thing and realized there was no possible way for us to save it. Ended up scrapping the siding and throwing away most of the interior stuff except the stainless steel oven. The only journey that motorhome ever took was when we moved and I towed it behind our van out to our new place in the country. There it say behind our barn until we moved and gave it to the neighbor.
Now we have a newer and much nicer motorhome that we use as a bedroom and shower in our warehouse. RV living inside a building isn’t all that terrible LOL
