@Bryan Mack kayfabe isn't a conspiracy. Saying it has been going on is not a real reason to not believe that. You don't understand kayfabe if you believe that.
When you think of massive egos in the 90s, you think of Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels. These two absolutely hated each other both on and off screen, every time they were in the same room, you knew an explosion was coming and it wasn't going to be pretty. Without a doubt, the most personal feud in wrestling history
They both really had huge egos. But I can't help but to side with Bret on most occasions. To me, it seemed like Bret wasn't willing to go to certain lows until he finally snapped and punched the guy. To me, it seems like Shawn didn't really need to get pissed off about any of the things that got him angry. He's angry that Bret hadn't talked to him, well Bret did the right thing imo by not talking to him. He's upset Bret talked too long, honestly it could've been an honest mistake. He's pissed that Bret makes more, well truthfully that is none of Shawn's business.
I just discovered the "Reliving the War" series a couple weeks ago.. I've been binge watching ever since. I'm enjoying Raw and Nitro as much (or more) this way as I did watching it in the 90s. Your commentary is brilliant. Personal yet poignant. I bet you're a great guy to sit back, share a brew with, and talk old school wrestling.
In many ways the fight was the beginning of the end for Bret in WWF. Vince ostensibly picked HBK over Bret in the summer of 1997 in an effort to bring Michaels back, and even though Bret won the title, he wasn't in the main event, and then Vince hit him with the 'I want to get out of our 20-year contract' talk in September 1997. It's ironic in a way, that by a year later, both of them, who had defined much of the 90s WWF, were gone. Vince picked HBK over Bret, and then Michaels spent four years out with an injury five months after Bret left, giving Austin and Rock a free ride to the top of WWF superstardom.
I’m a huge Bret fan and as a kid was devastated when he left and hated the way Vince buried him after Montreal but looking back on it now both Bret and Shawn needed to be gone for the Attitude Era to flourish. Austin and Rock drew 10 times more money than Bret and Shawn.
@@cyrus2546 I think Bret could've still operated within the AE, as he had huge respect for Austin and Rock and would've worked to help elevate the latter like he did the former. But Michaels needed to go, as he didn't want to play second fiddle to anyone. Bret was more of a company man in that regard. Imagine Bret vs Rock or Bret vs Foley or Bret vs 2000 Triple H?

But not long after that I was fully engrossed in WCW and the NWO storyline, so the vast majority of this feud completely passed me by in my teens. Throw in DX vs. The Hart Foundation and you never know how the Monday Night Warts could have gone if Bret stayed in WWE.
I saw a Zoom interview with Bret. He was asked if there was something that he could have done differently, what would it be. He said that he would have figured out a way to stay with WWE rather than going to WCW. Even if Bret and Shawn just tolerated each other's presence...yes, the course of history might have been different. Is if he didnt leave for WCW what would happen to Stone Cold Steve Austin? No doubt Austin would still have become a star but would he have become as big as he became? Answer in short is no. Reason being because Mr McMahon became a character and evil boss after the screwjob. Austin/Vince story would not have happened if the Screwjob didnt go down. One of those rare times a story was told by two wrestlers and it wasnt wildly different, besides HBK being a lil generous on the the fight details of course
Vince created these two egomaniacs as much as I loved them both. Crazy this rivalry presented a lot of what ifs throughout 97, that’s how impactful their onscreen and personal rivalry was possibly changing the landscape of the business
If you have seen the Bret & Shawn Interview DVD you get sense the rivalry was a serious set of misunderstandings that could have been avoided. Also I sensed Vince in a way feuled the fire between Bret & Shawn
It's amazing how many things would have changed if Shawn had been granted his release. No DX, no Montreal Screwjob to create the heel Mr McMahon character, Austin vs Bret 3 would almost certainly main event WM14, Owen might not have been saddled with that Blue Blazer gimmick had Bret still been there to stick up for him backstage, and no Bret vs Goldberg at Starrcade 99 to cut his career short. On the other hand in WCW you'd have Shawn in the Wolfpac not breaking his back in a casket match, likely immediately butting heads with Hogan backstage, and god knows who'd have won in a HBK/Hall/Nash vs Hogan battle. The entire course of wrestling history changed purely because Vince favoured Shawn over Bret.
That Owen hart statement stuck with me. I think u are correct in that Bret would've stuck up for lil bro and probably got him outta that blue blazer ish
There was nothing Shawn could've done to Hogan. His creative control and relationship with Bischoff ensured he got his way and the other guys had to play ball. Nash had heat with Hogan during the time of the Wolfpack but eventually resigned himself to the situation as Hogan wanted Scott Hall in the black and white group and there was nothing they could do. Shawn would've come in and probably been allied with Hogan on TV sooner or later. Similar to Bret it would've been a while before he was seen as a World title contender either, possibly only after Russo came in. I think Shawn would have been less over after going through all that and his star power diminished in favour of WCW pushing guys like Goldberg. As far as WCW goes, it still would have fallen due to the inevitable AOL/TIme Warner merger. The suits in charge didn't want wrestling and with Ted Turner outsted there was nobody left to defend WCW regardless of it's quality or ratings. They all would have had to come crawling back to Vince sadly. And don't forget, with Scott Hall's worsening drinking problems, he might've influenced Shawn to go down a darker path if they were on the road together.
@@NitroNEXT while you may be right, I think in the short term, Shawn didn’t need to be in the World Title picture right away anyway, he would have made a stronger impact with the Wolfpack crew. Honestly, Vince made a huge decision in fighting to keep Shawn over Brett. Hogan/Savage was always a complex one. They got on when they could make money together and hated each other when they weren’t working together. They could put aside their differences when needs be. Therefore on a personal scale I’d say Bret/Shawn was a bigger rivalry
@@chris_t2020 Savage could have taken Hogan spot on top. Which he should have done as WWF champion. However Hogan was still very much the company’s number one guy at the time of Savages reign. I think Shawn even admitted to this later, but if he went to WCW during this time, he would have been buried and relegated to the mid-card with matches against Berlin and Disco Inferno, and been a Scott Norton-level member of the nWo

These are 2 of the greatest performance fighters ever. They understood all aspects of the business and were smart enough to see kayfabe dying. I would suspect they tried to save kayfabe and set up the fight for the marks who were getting smarter and had to keep it secret from the rest of the locker room and everyone outside of Vince McMahon. They were too passionate for the business and understood it too much to be that childish, I would think.
@Bryan Mack kayfabe isn't a conspiracy. Saying it has been going on is not a real reason to not believe that. You don't understand kayfabe if you believe that.
When you think of massive egos in the 90s, you think of Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels.

Great video! I really loved this rivalry back then.
These 2 had amazing matches and they hated each other. Could you imagine if they were friends or at least friendly towards each other? They could have held the rivalry for a couple of extra years.
I'd like to think that Bret's career wouldn't have been cut short and that he wouldn't have had a stroke about a couple of years later. In the documentary "350 days," he said, "I'm a train wreck" to describe himself physically.
Well in 1996 they were friends i believe or at least respected eachother and they went on too have the greatest match in Wrestlemania history which was a 60 minute iron man match. So if you want to imagine what it would be like when they were friends go watch that match(if you haven’t already). Also I recommend watching their matches in the early 90s. They had a ladder match that was a banger. Lol
@@glamgal7106 He would’ve never got concussed by Goldberg and misused by wow if he just kept his ego aside and stop being so selfish. Shawn probably doesnt get that career ending back injury because he would have been feuding with Bret instead of taker which means that casket match where shawn hurts his back never happens. Owen Hart would likely still be alive as well because if Bret was still with WWF he would have stopped Owen from doing that stupid stunt. But the big ? Is if he didnt leave for WCW what would happen to Stone Cold Steve Austin? No doubt Austin would still have become a star but would he have become as big as he became? Answer in short is no. Reason being because Mr McMahon became a character and evil boss after the screwjob. Austin/Vince story would not have happened if the Screwjob didnt go down. Which means the attitude era we know and love wouldnt have been as exciting. Maybe Vince still finds a way to become evil boss holding back Stone Cold but the screwjob villainized Mr. McMahon and triggered Stone Cold to go after him. McMahon evil boss wouldnt have been as impactful. Everything happens for a reason. I too always wondered what would have happened if Bret stayed.
There might not even be AE. Waaiit...
Triple H also would’ve went down a different path. Maybe he goes with Shawn to wcw
As much as the screw job sucks, Vince knew Bischoff wasn’t smart enough to book Brett properly, whereas Shawn and Nash where smart enough to play the game and find ways to keep their names at or near the top of the cards and storylines.

Is it safe to say this rivalry was far bigger than Hogan/Savage?
Hogan/Savage was always a complex one. They got on when they could make money together and hated each other when they weren’t working together. They could put aside their differences when needs be. Therefore on a personal scale I’d say Bret/Shawn was a bigger rivalry
@DesignsbyKODONA it was more to do with Savages jealousy than paranoia. Than Hogan being a threat to his relationship with Liz.
No, especially not financially. Hogan and Savage made fortunes together.
@@chris_t2020 Savage could have taken Hogan spot on top. Which he should have done as WWF champion. However Hogan was still very much the company’s number one guy at the time of Savages reign. All injuries are different, but in his case his back injury was clearly worse. The fact that he chose to drop the belt to Austin with his back injury instead of forfeiting it, but not to Bret says alot.
While ill never hurt myself to needing surgery, i found i could still do alot more with a hurt back than a hurt knee, so i can fully understand shawn not wrestling with a injured knee but still wrestling with his hurt back...
I remember this like yesterday yet it was so long ago. Have no clue where time has gone.
18:32 Wait wait wait Skip? The same Skip who was dating Sunny? How the hell did he get on friendly terms with Shawn after his whole fiasco with her
I always loved them both .So handsome and entertaining
