- Legenary news anchor Charlie Gaddy bids farewell to his audience in this moving edition of the Six O'Clock News. Humble and gracious to the last moment, Gaddy's stirring farewell speech at the end of the newscast is both classy and heart-felt. It reminds us all of why Gaddy was one of the most beloved local anchors in the entire country. (Originally aired 6pm July 1, 1994 -- WRAL, Raleigh)
I learned one time after Charlie retired the 1st Phone Call he got was from Larry Stogner of WTVD.
Thanks for the comment. As a former news anchor and reporter, it is important to clarify a few things: Charlie held the news anchor position from 1970-1994. Also, Tom isn't the sports director. He's simply the lead Sports Anchor. He's held that spot since 1981.
Thank you! It has been 13 years since I watched that. We still miss Charlie Gaddy's presence on the news.
I remember this broadcast, when he left. I remember when Channel 5 looked like that, and I remember the old Sky 5 Hughes 500. Mr. Gaddy was an excellent anchor, Channel 5 wasn't the same without him.
Yep. In fact -- I was there! And I have "behind the scenes" footage I recorded. Just haven't had time to uploaded it yet.
I was 6 when Charlie Gaddy retired.
24 years today!
I was seventeen at this time and Charlie Gaddy's retirement seemed like earth-shifting news. He was our Dan Rather, and WRAL hasn't been the same without him. All these years later, it still seems strange not to have Charlie Gaddy telling us what's happening in the world.
Pam Saulsby, Greg Fishel, & Tom Suiter are still on WRAL today.
Shortly before WRAL switched out Stephen Arnold's Finale news music with 615's In-Sink news music
You are correct. Lawrence left in either late 2002 or early 2003 for TWC. He is a fine man. Always was nice to me when I was covering news for WPTF. You do know who his daughter is ... don't you?
Was that really that far back? Wow! I was in middle school (summer of 6th grade) when this broadcast aired. Amazing how just two years later they were the first station to broadcast an entire newscaste in HD! WRAL is North Carolina's news leader for a reason--they are great!
I loved Charlie when I was a little girl. I remember seeing him at a restaurant @ Mission Valley near the station when I was in kindergarten. He had on a black fur coat I think. I thought he was a god! I couldn't believe that he actually ate food. Good times!
I was very little, probably about 6 or 7, when Charlie was on WRAL, but I still remember him to this day. He must have made some kind of impression for me to remember him. Just seeing this reminds me why. He was very talented and great at what he did.
I remember that newscast.
well igrew up watching charlie and bobby, greg and tom,it always felt like family u were watching.i never met charlie but i bet he was a class act!!been gone from raleigh now for over 20 yrs i still visit but didnt knoe charlie had retired,
They did promote his last newscast for about a month before he left on 7/1/1994. They even ran stories during their newscasts looking back at his career at WRAL.
Charlie Gaddy is a legend here in the Triangle, who has held the news anchor position at WRAL for more than 30 years ending in 1994. Out of all the news people that had been there only two remained...Greg Fishel, who has been the weatherman since 1981, and Tom Suiter, who has been the sports director at TV-5 for since 1969. Imagine Football Friday without Tom Suiter at the helm?
I miss him so much. He was the only traffic guy I'd watch.
Before Fishel, Bob DeBardelaben was THE man with the weather on WRAL, a legend
Whatever happend to Tom Lawrence? He was a damn good tech reporter in the late 90s/early 00s
It could be no one other than Sharon Lawrence of "NYPD Blue" fame. I remember that WRAL called her during their coverage of the Northridge Earthquake that happened during the mid 90's.
When I meant previous version of WRAL's graphics, I meant the graphics from 1991-93 that did use the same Stephen Arnold Finale Music Package. Apologies for confusion......
Tom Suiter had hair!!
Not at all! I occassionally miss being on the air. But .... it's rare. I certainly don't miss the shallowness of some of the people. It surprised me how much I became at ease not being there. Looking back, however, I cringe when I think about working there. Lowe's really treats its employees with such respect.
I think Gaddy first took the anchor chair in 1974. He started at 'RAL hosting "Good Morning Charlie" in 1970 after many years on WPTF radio as host of "Ask Your Neighbor."
that was pretty sad not only with Gaddy retiring but with the death of a mayor.
do you have the broadcast from last november that Gaddy and Battista did?
Do you have any full WRAL or WTVD newscast?
I have about a dozen video tapes filled with mostly WRAL-TV 5 News episodes from roughly 1988-2001. Most are from 1989-1994.
A few problems: (1) They are all on VHS; (2) They were mostly recorded in EP (Extended Play) so they are lower quality; (3) I don't have a working VCR any longer; and (4) I really don't have the time to upload them if I did.
I keep swearing I am going to get around to it one day, however.
@@RandyGupton Understood. Thank you for the reply !
The open used by WRAL from 1993-1995 was later used by WFMZ from 1995-1999…
I remember watching this. I grew up in North Carolina and Charlie Gaddy was the voice of news for NC. Our family went to Raleigh one holiday season and saw the play Scrooge. It was a funny take on the story, but at one point, Charlie Gaddy came out on the stage as himself and spoke with Scrooge. Has it really been 16 years?
Randy, do you miss being at Curtis?
Isn't he a spokesperson for Time Warner Cable in the Triangle?
It was mentioned that the previous version of WRAL's graphics and intros were the worst ever. I will agree that those were a bad version compared to the ones shown here. This began a period of great graphics and intros for WRAL that continues to this day. I wish that I had this version of graphics on DVD or VHS....
Funny, almost every decent person who has worked there says the same thing. Even Eddie Harrel said that he was so happy to be out of there. Nothing will change at Curtis as long as the "Everly Brothers", (Don and Phil) are there
Now Tom Suiter is gone. Maybe he will still do Football Friday's in the fall.
Does anyone know why Mark Roberts was blown out of WRAL? He must have done something to piss off Goodmon...
yeah, Pam Saulsby, Debra Morgan, and Gerald Owens do not ALL need to be on the 11:00
This video confirms two things: Greg Fishel has always had the same horrible haircut and television screens used to be made out of glass.

Ahhhhh, the good old days when WRAL was a pseudo objective news outlet and not a robot mouthpiece for the radical left and woke culture.
I unfortunately feel the same way. They have zero objectivity any longer. I never watch them. Sad, really. Because I grew up idolizing them.
