Thanks for the comments! Yes, I realize it costs money to run a shop and pay employees 😂 Everyone that comes over seas mentions to me that they’re shocked by how early everything closes (especially a city as big as Sydney) so I made a video on it. Have a great day! ❤️
I'm pretty sure it's because most shops are self owned and not a part of a big company, I like when it's quiet because all my friends try to stay and muck around for as long as possible, love your vids btw
Its because Australians culture has an enphasis on your home & family life. Certain businesses are only allowed, (under labour laws,) to trade certain hours. Alot of cafes are open at that time tho, just not the ones that rely on office workers for trade bro.
I grew up in Sydney and when I was younger never understood why stores closed early - and just like this American thought "when will workers ever find time to buy clothes"? I was 24 at the time and now at 33, I understand why. Basically - go home to your family, have a cup of tea instead of coffee, go for a swim in the ocean, invite friends over for board games & dinner, watch the sunset at the beach - instead of buying materialistic crap you don't need. There's so much more to life than conspicuous consumption. Life is about the quality of your relationships, not about how much crap you can buy.
Not to mention penalty rates of pay for out of ordinary hours work. Thats the thing that impacts it the most that Americans don't understand because their wages / pay systems over there are not as fair to employees as they are here.
As an Australian, the clothing shops I dont understand myself but the coffee shops and cafes tend to close around the 2-4pm mark coming into dinner and that’s when the restaurants open
My local suburban cafe - open till 7pm, restaurants tend to be more popular in the evening - can have coffee or tea or a glass of wine, juice at the bar in hotels, for a catch up with friends.
@@averlinbc5680 I mean that shouldn't be assumed that everyone who comes under family is expected to be home at 6pm to be with their families as a justification for early closing times.
I live in Sydney and YES it’s so annoying how early stuff closes, BUT, I’ve been to America a dozen times and I reckon the reason things can stay open so late there is that peoples wages are so low!!
The people who work in the shops also want to go out. We have a high standard of living bc we don’t expect people to work more than a 9-5. Basically in Australia service industry workers are not second class citizens who have to give up their whole life to serve the people with slightly better jobs. Make sense?
Australia is the earliest rising country in the world. There are states in Aus where it can reach 35 degrees by 7am in summer. Because it gets so hot so early on in the day it means we start our days earlier than other countries. You may not be able to find a cafe open at 8pm on a Wednesday night, but you'll certainly find cafes that open at 4am on a Wednesday morning.
If you want a coffee in the afternoon or even at night, go to a restaurant that also serves coffee - they're everywhere. Also here in Sydney, we have night shopping every Thursday night (where all shops close at 8pm or 9pm), in Melbourne, night shopping is every Friday night. Also here in Australia, we're given at least 4 weeks of annual leave and 10 days of sick leave per year, so we kind of have time to do our shopping, supermarkets are usually open until midnight (especially in our major suburbs), also don't forget to venture outside of the main tourist areas and into our suburbs as they're like smaller cities in their own right.
Melbourne has night shopping on both Thursday and Friday actually. And generally always until 9. Plus a bunch of our department stores are 24 hours or open until about 8 most nights at the earliest, unless you’re in the country.
I think it would be better if shops opened later and closed later.... Cafe's.... Well they make most of their money early in the morning and it tapers off after 2pm
I hate it too, it seems like they don't want money haha. But in fact this is commendable on Australia's part, it is never about money but about behavior and common good
Your right , but one reason might be is that retailers usually work from 9:00 to 5:30 and we have late night shopping on Thursday night were retailers are open till 9 pm
I agree so frustrating cafes close early I love that about Melbourne there’s a few open late if you’re meeting up with colleagues or friends after work not everyone wants to go to a noisy bar or even a restaurant. sigh.
Because city of Sydney council.killed the after hours economy to please their Paddlington neighbours.. and now the cost of living is the death blow to the already crippled night life.. bravo Aussie gov bravo
I went to Australia last October. Drove from Sydney, stopped over in Yas. And everything was shut at 3pm. it was like a ghost town. Coming from London it was unusual to me and this was on a weekday
Shops close early because staff have a life too and go home to be with their families - or coffee shops open as 6am and then close mid afternoon to go home or collect their kids from school. Life isnt about consumer goods
When I first came to Sydney from Japan, department stores were not open on Saturdays and Sundays. Even in the CBD, most shops closed at 5pm on Fridays. The 7-Eleven store was also closed at 5pm.
When I moved here I felt the same way. After more than a few decades I've learned that most people shop on the weekends or late night shopping or at big W which is open till 6.
You need to come out west!! Past the eastern suburbs everything is open late!! There are a few shisha or “hookah” cafes that are open till midnight in Liverpool
If shops increase their hours, the increase their sales marginally, but blow out their wages overhead. Better to force people to shop/buy within a window.
I’m with you…I love Australia but the retail/post office hours kill me. Can’t do anything outside of work and have to do it all on my weekend. Maybe retail hours could be 11am-7pm..?
Many cafes open at 5am, so finishing up at 2pm is a 9 hour day already. My local cafe just extended their opening hours to 5pm but it's empty in the afternoon.
**bars in Sydney close after midnight. Try Melbourne. There’s also a bunch of cafes in the city here that are open late, but generally cafes close at around 3 because they only have a few staff and they start at 5am.
We are not required to work absurd hours giving most of us time to do what we need. Keeping places open 24/7 pushes up the cost of everything so, we just plan better.
After 6pm employees have to be paid more, at least for retail (including food retail). It encourages work life balance, but also stems from the days of a stay at home parent who could do the shopping during the day. Now people just shop on weekends
This is the most annoying thing about Australia for me. It’s so hard to find a dentist’s that is still open after 5.30 pm. Or a chemist that opens till 10 pm.

A lot of coffee shops get their trade from office workers buying their coffee and lunch, so they don't need to stay open because everyone is heading home after work. People shop in their lunch breaks, late night shopping one evening a week, and on Saturday and Sunday.
Dear America, happy to have you here in this beautiful country Australia. We are a little country compared to with your, and over here we spend more with the family. I wish for you an great time Down Under🤩🥰🥰
I'm not sure if it's mentioned but another reason why everything closes so early is because of old fashioned draconian 1950s laws about how late shops can stay open and how a lot of states like South Australia haven't bothered to update these laws (If you want okay coffee past 3:00 p.m. honestly just Go to McDonald's go to the McCafe. The coffee is not half bad)
The work-life balance is much more important here, honestly. And they’re open on the weekends, so people can just go home after work and go in on their day off.
I think Sydney stuff shuts earlier than the rest of the country because most of the cafes where I live are open a lot longer (I live in Australia just not Sydney)
I actually agree with you. That's why McDonalds and some fast food places do so well. There are places though, like clubs and pubs where you can get a decent coffee after 3pm. It's just the cafes that shut down at that time.
I don’t understand it either. I feel its mostly because of fair wages here, night shift pay rate starts at 6 PM, for casual workers it could be 150% of regular pay. Only if retail shopping were as easy as Coles where everyone who enters is a definitely a customer. So I understand the business’s perspective.
You dont need coffee after 2pm , we actually like our families here and enjoy time with them so shops shut at 5 . Maybe it's because we focus on life and not being No 1 , ruling the world , being centre of attention . Plus happy hour is usually in the afternoon , can't enjoy that if at work can you . Afternoon surfs is another good reason why
Cafes close early because they are usually open really early for people who are on their way to work. The staff are only allowed to work so many hours a day, anything over is OT and especially now that is very costly for businesses. Most states have late shopping, either Thurs or Fri nights or both and shops are also open all day Sat and Sun so plenty of opportunities to shop. Suggest you get a Nespresso machine so you can make yourself a 1/2 decent cup of coffee at home. Melb clubs are open later than Syd.
Cities have a day each week with extended shopping hours; the problem with opening hours emerged during Covid Lockdown, & they haven't sorted it out again yet.
It's sort of a good thing. How many Australians do you know that need 3 or 4 part-time jobs to survive? We also get Medicare support and paid sick and holiday leave.
Along with the other reasons mentioned, we also wake up early. Brisbane is the earliest rising city in the world with the others not far behind. Early rise = early to bed. Shopping at 9-12pm is not a normal part of the culture, many of us are asleep then.
As an Australian it was such a novelty for me, when I went to Europe and the shops would stay open until 8 or 9 pm everyday. It was great. I also agree with you about the cafe thing. We do have Thursday late night shopping which close at 9pm.. but i agree i do wish shops stay open late but then you gotta feel sorry for the workers. I must say though i did luv going to day clubs after it was time to leave the night club.. gone are those days.
The reason this happens is because people work 9-5 or something similar to it. It’s too expensive for them to stay open later. Price of living wage and workers rights.
costs too much so they only open during prime trade time. Also stores was open way longer in the early 2000s then people started complaining about noise when they moved next to noisy areas.
You're not wrong. As an Aussie this has always been an embarrassment when hosting friends from overseas. The CBD becomes a ghost town.... I just don't think the cities have the volume of traffic to sustain the business. High wages and high costs will drive most to close at or just after the peak.
Tell your overseas friends that in Australia, the retail employees have a life outside of work and deserve their time off with family and friends too. No one needs to shop 24 / 7.

For me, we have late night shopping on Thursdays but I don’t know about other parts of Australia. I just know that on Thursdays a lot of shops stay open till around 9. Edit: the cafes and bakeries dont stay open late because a lot of them aren’t chain and aren’t as popular so they just stay open for breakfast and lunch and sometimes afternoon tea
They close really early because Australia has to manny public holidays like at least every second week there’s some kind of 1 day holiday or it’s also many shop keepers are from different places and have there own culture so they close early to attend it

Coffee is a morning phenomena, bars, we are just boring!
TOP 3 PLACES OPEN 24/7
3.Asian grocery stores. It really depends on what state you live in but here in Melbourne there open around the clock.

Thank you - this is what I’ve been saying!!! Where is my afternoon coffee at cry😢
They close really early because Australia has to manny public holidays like at least every second week there’s some kind of 1 day holiday or it’s also many shop keepers are from different places and have there own culture so they close early to attend it
