  • It is said that Enzo Ferrari’s inspiration for V12 power was the legendary French manufacturer Louis Delage and its fabulous series of racing cars from 1923-28.
The GP Delage was built in 1923 with a beautifully 2-litre double overhead camshaft and ran at the French Grand Prix. After the event it was decided to push the car to a corner of the factory and focus on its ultra-fast sprint cars. The chassis was eventually gifted to Maurice Béquet, a famous French aviator who had close links to the Hispano-Suiza factory.
Béquet knew a great handling chassis when he saw one, and hatched the idea of turning the advanced, lightweight 11-litre Hispano V8 aero engine from an ex-French airforce World War I fighter, the SPAD, to power the GP Delage.
And so, the Delage-Béquet was born in 1925. Probably one of the most fascinating racecars ever built to date. Spectacularly fast on the tracks and always a treat for the eyes in the GP paddocks.
It was a true muscle car delivering 180 Horse Power at 1600 RPM. Back then, this car was a state of the art, beautiful piece of engineering.
Paul K couldn’t resist the opportunity to photograph this unique old-timer when he found out it was stationed in Brussels, at Vanderveken’s garage held by Paul Grant, waiting to be sold.
Before making this picture, not only had Paul a precise idea how he would stage the car but he also knew that only with dedolight he would be able to give the picture the intimate and absorbing feel that is so peculiar to his style.
Thanks to the clean beam and incredible focusing range of the Dedolight, Paul enhanced the natural and authentic design, adding reflections and highlights on details of the car and in the set.
Dedolight differs from any other form of light source due to its character and concept.
Firstly, it’s the quality of light that is no less than perfect and secondly, it’s the fact that they’re quiet lightweight and compact so that they can be put anywhere in the set. Getting so much clean light out of such a small item is jaw-dropping!
For an artist photographer like Paul K, such features are essential to his art. He can only master such intricate compositions by having the right tool in his hands.
The Dedolight is like a modern tool for the “painter”. But instead of brushes and paint, it’s about clean beams and well-defined reflections.
Paul has an incredible amount of DLH4’s, DLH652’s and DLH1000’s. For this picture, almost all his lights were used. Not for exposure, but simply to give dimension and feeling to the picture.
Because at the end of the day, lighting is about finding balance between contrast and nuance.
