Hey! We always preheated our thermoses or canteens with boiled water and let it sit while heating up the food that we would put into the thermos. When the food was heated, we'd transfer the hot water to a mug for tea. The food stays hotter for longer this way, and you get tea with breakfast :)
The best game I ever bought at the thrift store was a game called Omega Virus for $2, it was missing a lot of pieces, I parted it out, and made $200 on eBay with the pieces.
My way to keep warm in a cold house is to put on my almost-vintage Acrylic sweater from Value Village, (made of 100% Acrylic). I actually have to take it off after 20 min because I am getting too hot in my 17 C house. The sweater was 5 bucks, and actually looks brand new and the color suits me perfectly. (yes, yes...I know... 100% Acrylic... I too feel sorry for all the innocent little acrylics that had been robbed of their fur to make my sweater.. :P )
I bought long underwear this year. I absolutely love cuddleduds fleece wear long sleeved top from JC Penney’s. Walmart also has climate right cuddleduds rated warmest in store. Just wanted to add my house is cold and I can’t afford to raise the thermostat Thanks for the recommendations ❤
Fret thee not. Acrylics are shorn early Spring so they don't get too hot in the sun. The darkest fleece ones get hot first, so they are shorn before the lighter ones. It all works out to mutual advantage.
I took you advise last year and bought 4 solar light bulbs. I have a small 1 bedroom apartment and i have one in each room that i use instead of turning on lights. My electric bill last month was 25.15. I batch cook my muffins and corn bread and freeze it for the month. I also barch cook chili and soups. So all i need to do is heat it up in the microwave. I keep my heat set at 64. When i have company once a month, i do think about them and i turn it up to 68. Which seems hot to me.
Sears use to have a scratch and dent store. We got a huge new refrigerator for my daughters house. Original price $1500, but I paid about $600. They said there was a scratch somewhere on the back. She’s had it for a few years, we’ve never found the scratch!
I got a scratch and dent, tiny dent and 2 inch scratch on the side no one would ever see, and discounted. It was a front load washer dryer set. It started at $2,000 and we got it for $750 for the pair. No sales tax, rebate from electric company of $50, free delivery and set up. I was thrill because it used 1/2 the detergent plus I called tide and they hadn’t come out with a he detergent at that time and they said use 1/2 of that so I used 75% less detergent, only 13 gallons of water vs 40 and the wash ran 43 mins vs 1 hr. The dryer time was cut almost in half because they came out of the washer with less liquid in them. I saved so much money overall. And I’ve had them for 22 yrs now, no problems.
I buy new board games online at Black Friday sales and never pay over $5. Our 4-year-old granddaughter wanted the electronic games where the ducks go around in a circle as well as a fishing game that is very similar. While on vacation last year, hubby and I were walking around a mall in the town we were vacationing in and a toy store had tables set up right at their door and both games were clearanced on the table for 75% off so we purchased both for around $5 each. We gave her the fishing game for her birthday and plan to gift the duck game to her this Christmas 😊.

At our local grocery store, I got 1/2 dozen large lemons and a dozen limes at the discount isle. Great news of which I was very pleased. Now the bad news--Got ill and could barely get around so today November 3, I had to use the drier for all 5 loads and turned the heat on because of the fever chills. Gratitude moment: At least the electric bill was very low in October, and the lemons/limes drinks soothed our throats. God is good! I noticed that Larry used his hand a bit when he was talking about the devices. Another reason to praise the Lord. Hope, you look good for the extra care you have to give at this time. I got my electrician when he rewired my house to put a switchbank by the exit door that I use to leave the bldg. I can switchoff all the lights and unneeded appliances while I am out. I also had my fridges/freezers put on seperate circuits and got a UPS charged by solar panels as a cheap form of insurance to protect my food from spoilage
We made it to the 1st of November. But here is a funny, my daughter called me when she got home from work today, 11/7, and wanted to know if we had our furnace on because her house was so cold and she didn’t want to turn on before we did. She said she uses us as her guide. I feel I cheated her out of six warm house days🙂

No heater for us. Southern California. Still Tshirts and shorts weather during the day, when the sun goes down, may need a long sleeve Tshirt or lite weight hoodie. Same drill for early mornings. We open windows and blinds to warm the house in the morning. Usually close them around 9 pm as it starts to get a bit cool in the house. We lived with 55 degree temperatures inside the house, at times, during winter 2022.
Wow people are so different... I have coworkers who wear shorts and short sleeves all year, even in winter and I have some coworkers who bundle up all year, even in summer. I live in central California, so it's never really cold cold ..like no snow where I live. The last time it snowed here was December of 1998. And thank goodness, I was on Christmas break and didn't have to drive cuz these people here don't know how to drive in snow.
We are used to being extremely comfortable when it comes to things like heating… being off grid for the past six years, I’m now comfortable between 54-63F inside temperatures during the winter. Layered clothing and always wearing slippers inside. As long as my feet and nose aren’t too cold, I’m fine!
Good advice! Recently, I bought ten pair of merino wool socks; I love them, bought some a few years ago, but they were beginning to be worn. Why I bought ten pair of socks? Because there was 40 per cent off the normal price by ten. Some of them will be extra Christmas gifts for my daughters. Otherwise, I never go down on wool sweaters, and I have knitted 100 per cent ecological wool scarves for my entire family. Much appreciated! Another simple advice is to get moving. Take a walk, do some excercise, it is good for you! And makes you keep warm.
Real Tough Socks are the best, and are a family business. They last forever and can be darned if they start to show wear. And they don't smell on hot days.
We have a whole store that's only scratch and dents. It's not a warehouse for a particular company, but a store that sells all brands of scratch and dent appliances. I got a brand new, in the box Hot Point dishwasher. It was a discontinued style... the buttons are on the outside. The style now seems to have the knobs on the top inside. I don't care where they are, as long as they work. It was $400.
I don't have a scratch and dent washer but 15 years ago I switched to a front load washer saves tons on energy in my opinion to dry my clothes it takes over half the time to dry. My t shirts and underwear takes 20 min to dry, 15 minutes if I put a dry bath sheet in with the washed clothes.

Been watching for over 2 years .cut my electric by more than half using methods including the ones you listed...my goal is to have my eco flow solar systems hard wired into my house by the end of 2024 ( no roof panels for me .on a frame in my backyard..hurricanes in my area and yard mount allows me to remove and store in the shed when needed). To keep the popcorn fresh when purchased in bulk ask friends to save 2 liter pop bottles for you...fill with a funnel and toss in a 02 absorber..the bottles can be stored like cordwood and you will have it fresh for YEARS. I also love my kill a watt..it has saved me a d my friends SO MUCH MONEY
I have the silicone cupcake liner..I love it. I do a lot of cupcakes and pumpkin cupcakes from Trader Joe’s, I bake both and give cupcakes and pumpkin cupcakes to my parents, ex husband & ex mother-in-law, and my current mother-in-law. My best score ever at a scratch and dent was for an upholstered comfy chair. I had been waiting patiently for this specific chair to go on sale hoping to save a couple hundred. Sale day finally arrived and there was my chair --- missing just one of the tiny plastic no-scratch feet. It was discounted by a whopping $700......so of course, I felt free to splurge $3.99 for a package of 4 new no-scratch foot pads.
For taking lunch to work buy those boxes/bags that have metal and reusable plastic containers like Tupperware containers . I also have an insulated carafe on my automatic coffeeaker . When coffee is ready I switch off coffee maker saving electricity as insulated metal carafe keeps coffee hot for hours
We use a couple of Wal-Mart travel mugs for our tea. It keeps it hot so we enjoy it for several hours. We have cut consumption because we aren't dumping 1/2 cups that have gone cold. While we bought 4 on sale for $5 each we have gotten a few more at yard sales for $1. I really prefer tea and a ceramic mug for the first cup with breakfast, but the rest of the day, travel mugs.
Would love a solar light or two. For now, we are using about six landscaping lights inside at night. We charge them in the west window in the daytime. That money is just as good in our pocket as the electric company. Solar power is so under utilized. It seems like a solar panel in the back yard to hook things up to would be such a nice thing to have. Probably do and we don't know it yet.
Yes popcorn is a wonderful treat. Last three times I ate it, I broke a tooth each time. So be very very very careful. The Vet gives out really nice little cloth bags with prescriptions to take home. Too small for anything but lunch (which I eat at home) so I gave them back to use again. Recycle at prime source. ))

I actually DID have my heat at 58 one year while trying to get out of debt- but it turned out I actually had a thyroid problem. I have my heat at 67/68 while home. It's 64 when sleeping or away at work.
The other day I baked a Turkey leg in the oven. Then used it to toast Bagels [as I do not have a toast and can reheat them in the microwave when I want to eat them]. After that I baked a Cottage Pie. The oven was already heated so I thought why not get it all done at once.

It’s November 4 as I write this; I live in the Chicago area, and I still haven’t turned on my heat! But then, I live in a one bedroom first floor apartment, so I get a little radiant heat from my neighbors on three sides. Looking at the forecast-in the fifties for the next couple of weeks. I think I’ll probably be able to get away with no heat until almost Thanksgiving! :)

Yes, it is accumulative. For example, I started grocery shopping monthly and stocking up on loss leaders in the process. After a few months I had a surplus in the budget and was able to buy even more bargains. Eventually, our pantry was deep enough that we seldom paid full price for any food items. I was even able to buy six nonstick cake pans to freeze meals in with grocery money. They fit in gallon zip locks, were easy to pop the food out of, and I had a Pyrex dish the meals fit in for microwaving.
Love your tips but it's so difficult living with someone who doesn't want or can't to make to many changes. Mainly with utilities. My mom lives with me and at 88 she's cold most of the time and I have that tendency. Our furnace has been on since September. Never let the temp go below 70 or I turn blue. 😱
At 1130 on Halloween night, I came home to a house that was 53 degrees. I turned the furnace on but keep the temp to around 63 degrees in the winter. My goal was November 15th.
My objective for starting the heater was the october 15th. I live in a windy island in Québec. I had try to open it on the 8th because of a first 0°C outside. Turn out that the wind broke a neighbours tree and cut electricity 30 minutes before the planned start. Sooooo... I had only open it on the 15th of october. 🤣 objective done.
The same thing happened to us! We more or less made it to Nov. 1st before turning on the freezer. The night before everyone was getting ready for bed and it was already cool in the bedrooms. Knowing that the temperature was supposed to get close to freezing overnight, I said to go ahead and turn the heat on. We had frost the next morning so it was a good decision!
I made it to Nov 1st! 🎉🎉 It got low enough (63 inside) that the heat kicked on early in the AM the 2nd. We live in the South and my 4 kids can’t take lower than 63. LOL
In Denmark we number the weeks. And everybody...hospital, police, schools, factors...everybody. Even iPhone, Samsung and google had to add that function to the danish visionsion.....And we used for making appointment, to give a time frame for deadline...and schools holidays. Everybody knows the schools are closed in week 42 and week 7.....and week 30 to week 33 is the industrial summerholiday. It works

@daisyycanelatv... I found ceramic space heaters are the cheapest to run. I had a small one that I used all winter to heat our tiny house. Unless it got really cold out, I put the electric baseboard heaters on, very low in the bedrooms cause we'd get ice on the one pane windows. Saved us a LOT of $ though, using ceramic heaters. I live in a better home now.
We bought an infrared electric heater for a backup in case hubby and I are sick and unable to feed wood into our wood burning stove stove on our porch. The three times we have had to pull it out to heat the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room, we didn’t even see a difference in our electricity bill.
You will not believe this. I found a zojirushi lunch container at the Thrift store for $4.99. We then went out for coffee. I did not finish my coffee, I removed all the containers from the zojirushi and placed my cup of coffee inside. The coffee was still hot when I got home....Thank you. I am a believer
Went online shopping a few days ago. Discovered silicone liners, much like buckets are being sold to prevent crockpot liners from cracking. So far, I have only found sizes that fit 6-8 quart crockpots. Nothing for my brand new 4.5 quart. Would love to keep my 1.5 quart crockpot, the liner is cracked somehow, but hoping soon enough other sizes of crockpot silicone liners will be on the market. Crockpot liners expensive to replace.

What brand of rechargeable batteries do you think are good. I have had poor luck with them in the past but have thought about trying again. I also noticed it being colder in my house than last year. I do live on the lake so cold sometimes is an issue especially when winter actually gets here.

Rather than having lights on to read, we use neckights they are usb and have 3 light strengths. I also use it to walk around the house so we dont have lights on. Bought some motion semsors at regular intervals on my stais and one at the top, saves putting on the light and they dont get left on by accident. The items were from amazon. Bought a heated gillet and they sent me the wrong size, on contacting them to return it. They told me to keep it, saved £40. Aldi had a popcorn popper machine for £15 and can fill a cereal inner bag with popcorn. For smaller bags in the supermarket they charge about £3 and i can make a huge bag for pennies. Our heating still off, only went on briefly for the annual boiler service.
Ollie's - From what I've seen on line, its more of a discount grocery store rather than a full line grocery store. You will find deals there on groceries and other things but you still need to know and watch prices compared to other stores, sales, and loss leaders. Also, ypull,you'll, to check dates before stocking up.

My Aunt and I like Bath &Body wallflower they are usually 7.95 each. I have their app and the wallflower were 2.75 so I stocked up on the ones we like. Hopefully this order will get us through part if not all next year

I have certain items that I never pay full price for. Boxed cereal is one of those items. We eat a lot of it but it's a good coupon item, especially at CVS.

I also like Fetch but 25 pts = 2 1/2 cents, yes .025 cents. This is the standard amt earned on most receipts. Now instead of getting a $25 dollar gift card for 25,000 points, you have rearm 28,000 pts. I don’t earn very quickly as the extra points are mostly given on name brand food/items. I almost exclusively buy house brands. I usually hit that mark about every 8-9 months. But hey ,it’s still free. I also “rescue” receipts left behind at self checkout registers, inside grocery carts, or out in the parking lot.

Batch cooking has been a game changer for us too. With five living in out house it also helpd everyone to chose what they want and reheat it.

Another simple advice is to get moving. Take a walk, do some excercise, it is good for you! And makes you keep warm.
Real Tough Socks are the best, and are a family business. They last forever and can be darned if they start to show wear. And they don't smell on hot days.
We have a whole store that's only scratch and dents. It's not a warehouse for a particular company, but a store that sells all brands of scratch and dent appliances. I got a brand new, in the box Hot Point dishwasher. It was a discontinued style... the buttons are on the outside. The style now seems to have the knobs on the top inside. I don't care where they are, as long as they work. It was $400.
I don't have a scratch and dent washer but 15 years ago I switched to a front load washer saves tons on energy in my opinion to dry my clothes it takes over half the time to dry. My t shirts and underwear takes 20 min to dry, 15 minutes if I put a dry bath sheet in with the washed clothes.

To keep the popcorn fresh when purchased in bulk ask friends to save 2 liter pop bottles for you...fill with a funnel and toss in a 02 absorber..the bottles can be stored like cordwood and you will have it fresh for YEARS. I also love my kill a watt..it has saved me a d my friends SO MUCH MONEY

I have the silicone cupcake liner..I love it. I do a lot of cupcakes and pumpkin cupcakes from Trader Joe’s, I bake both and give cupcakes and pumpkin cupcakes to my parents, ex husband & ex mother-in-law, and my current mother-in-law. My best score ever at a scratch and dent was for an upholstered comfy chair. I had been waiting patiently for this specific chair to go on sale hoping to save a couple hundred. Sale day finally arrived and there was my chair --- missing just one of the tiny plastic no-scratch feet. It was discounted by a whopping $700......so of course, I felt free to splurge $3.99 for a package of 4 new no-scratch foot pads.
For taking lunch to work buy those boxes/bags that have metal and reusable plastic containers like Tupperware containers . I also have an insulated carafe on my automatic coffeeaker . When coffee is ready I switch off coffee maker saving electricity as insulated metal carafe keeps coffee hot for hours
We use a couple of Wal-Mart travel mugs for our tea. It keeps it hot so we enjoy it for several hours. We have cut consumption because we aren't dumping 1/2 cups that have gone cold. While we bought 4 on sale for $5 each we have gotten a few more at yard sales for $1. I really prefer tea and a ceramic mug for the first cup with breakfast, but the rest of the day, travel mugs.
Long underwear, wool socks, and flannel sheets help us save on our heating bill!
Would love a solar light or two. For now, we are using about six landscaping lights inside at night. We charge them in the west window in the daytime. That money is just as good in our pocket as the electric company. Solar power is so under utilized. It seems like a solar panel in the back yard to hook things up to would be such a nice thing to have. Probably do and we don't know it yet.
Yes popcorn is a wonderful treat. Last three times I ate it, I broke a tooth each time. So be very very very careful. The Vet gives out really nice little cloth bags with prescriptions to take home. Too small for anything but lunch (which I eat at home) so I gave them back to use again. Recycle at prime source. ))

It’s November 4 as I write this; I live in the Chicago area, and I still haven’t turned on my heat! But then, I live in a one bedroom first floor apartment, so I get a little radiant heat from my neighbors on three sides. Looking at the forecast-in the fifties for the next couple of weeks. I imagine after years of living frugally, you have a comfortable cushion now and can afford to do careful splurges. It is different for those just starting out on their frugal journey.
Yes, it is accumulative. For example, I started grocery shopping monthly and stocking up on loss leaders in the process. After a few months I had a surplus in the budget and was able to buy even more bargains. Eventually, our pantry was deep enough that we seldom paid full price for any food items. I was even able to buy six nonstick cake pans to freeze meals in with grocery money. They fit in gallon zip locks, were easy to pop the food out of, and I had a Pyrex dish the meals fit in for microwaving.
I spend most of my time in a runaway camper. Small space small bill. 💸

We have no heat upstairs except in the bathroom and turn off the furnace to 55 degrees at night and 65 in the daytime. We get oil 1 time a year.
Love your tips but it's so difficult living with someone who doesn't want or can't to make to many changes. Mainly with utilities. My mom lives with me and at 88 she's cold most of the time and I have that tendency. Our furnace has been on since September. Never let the temp go below 70 or I turn blue. 😱

At 1130 on Halloween night, I came home to a house that was 53 degrees. I turned the furnace on but keep the temp to around 63 degrees in the winter. My goal was November 15th.
My objective for starting the heater was the october 15th. I live in a windy island in Québec.
I had try to open it on the 8th because of a first 0°C outside. Turn out that the wind broke a neighbours tree and cut electricity 30 minutes before the planned start. Sooooo... I had only open it on the 15th of october. 🤣 objective done.
The same thing happened to us! We more or less made it to Nov. 1st before turning on the freezer. The night before everyone was getting ready for bed and it was already cool in the bedrooms. Knowing that the temperature was supposed to get close to freezing overnight, I said to go ahead and turn the heat on. We had frost the next morning so it was a good decision!

In Denmark we number the weeks. And everybody...hospital, police, schools, factors...everybody. Even iPhone, Samsung and google had to add that function to the danish visionsion.....And we used for making appointment, to give a time frame for deadline...and schools holidays. Everybody knows the schools are closed in week 42 and week 7.....and week 30 to week 33 is the industrial summerholiday. It works

@daisyycanelatv... I found ceramic space heaters are the cheapest to run. I had a small one that I used all winter to heat our tiny house. Unless it got really cold out, I put the electric baseboard heaters on, very low in the bedrooms cause we'd get ice on the one pane windows. Saved us a LOT of $ though, using ceramic heaters. I live in a better home now.
We bought an infrared electric heater for a backup in case hubby and I are sick and unable to feed wood into our wood burning stove stove on our porch. The three times we have had to pull it out to heat the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room, we didn’t even see a difference in our electricity bill.
You will not believe this. I found a zojirushi lunch container at the Thrift store for $4.99. We then went out for coffee. I did not finish my coffee, I removed all the containers from the zojirushi and placed my cup of coffee inside. The coffee was still hot when I got home....Thank you. I am a believer
Went online shopping a few days ago. Discovered silicone liners, much like buckets are being sold to prevent crockpot liners from cracking. So far, I have only found sizes that fit 6-8 quart crockpots. Nothing for my brand new 4.5 quart. Would love to keep my 1.5 quart crockpot, the liner is cracked somehow, but hoping soon enough other sizes of crockpot silicone liners will be on the market. Crockpot liners expensive to replace.

What brand of rechargeable batteries do you think are good. I have had poor luck with them in the past but have thought about trying again. I also noticed it being colder in my house than last year. I do live on the lake so cold sometimes is an issue especially when winter actually gets here.

We made it to Nov 1st too, I really wanted to try to get closer to Thanksgiving but the over night Temps were 32° and I was afraid the pipes would freeze, we keep our thermostat at 60°
We are hanging in there. My goal is Nov 15. One day the hubs used an area heater in his office; but the next day it was warmer. We have a planned vacation for that week, so maybe we will go longer! Lol
Rather than having lights on to read, we use neckights they are usb and have 3 light strengths. I also use it to walk around the house so we dont have lights on. Bought some motion semsors at regular intervals on my stais and one at the top, saves putting on the light and they dont get left on by accident. The items were from amazon. Bought a heated gillet and they sent me the wrong size, on contacting them to return it. They told me to keep it, saved £40.
Aldi had a popcorn popper machine for £15 and can fill a cereal inner bag with popcorn. For smaller bags in the supermarket they charge about £3 and i can make a huge bag for pennies.
Our heating still off, only went on briefly for the annual boiler service.

You will find deals there on groceries and other things but you still need to know and watch prices compared to other stores, sales, and loss leaders. There’s also all kinds of chemicals used in processed foods. Sadly out food supply is pretty tainted with all sorts of bad stuff 😢

I also like Fetch but 25 pts = 2 1/2 cents, yes .025 cents. This is the standard amt earned on most receipts. Now instead of getting a $25 dollar gift card for 25,000 points, you have rearm 28,000 pts. I don’t earn very quickly as the extra points are mostly given on name brand food/items. I almost exclusively buy house brands. I usually hit that mark about every 8-9 months. But hey ,it’s still free. I also “rescue” receipts left behind at self checkout registers, inside grocery carts, or out in the parking lot.
