Frugal people (like us) may use the same clothes or keep the same cars for a long time, but our home has always been open and hospitable, making good meals for company, giving a nice gift, etc. Cheap people do not like to share, spend on others or invite you for a meal but always have plenty of money for themselves for clothes and travel. The worst financial decision I ever made was financing new cars every 4 years. No more! The last time I did this was in 2008. Christmas of 2009, my husband was laid off. Excellent lesson learned. Paying cash for cars was one of our first forays into frugal living. It feels good to not owe anything to anyone and you save hundreds of dollars from buying with no interest. Good for you!!!

Practicing frugality causes us to slow down. When we are busy, we tend to be wasteful. There is so much provision around us if we pay attention to what is already available to us. It's freeing, not restrictive. The actions may be old fashioned, but the message is still in vogue.
I think you've mentioned it before that people wont treat you better because you're debt free or making good decisions. I agree with this 100%. The same people who look down their noses will still look down their noses. You have to do things for yourself.
I actually enjoy people looking down their noses at me. I'm 70 and I'm pretty frugal. Nobody ever mistakes me for a millionaire. I like to be in the shadows and to be underestimated. I think that a chance meeting with an elderly man changed my life. I was about 10 years old and the guy who the local kids picked on was on his knees finishing cement on a new sidewalk he had just poured. He ignored the taunts from the other kids and they left. I stayed and asked him about how he was carving the joints between the ''cracks'' between the pads. We spoke for quite a while. Us kids thought he was little more than a poor old grampa having to do the work himself all the time. Then one August day in 1962, my parents took my brother and I to the local radio station. The DJ showed us how he did his job and we were very impressed. The teletype started spewing some news on a sheet of paper. He tore it off and read it, ready to put it in his news break between the music. He was visible disturbed and went into an office. Out comes an elderly man in a suit and bow tie. The same old man the kids always taunted. He OWNED the radio station and several others. He recognized me and said ''This is a very important day. You are the first to know this news.'' Marilyn Monrow was just discovered dead in her bungalow. A few weeks later, I saw him in muddy Farmer John overalls digging a hole in a lawn to fix a collapsed clay sewer pipe. Some people from the Elks Club told my dad that the fellow was a multi millionaire, the same guy who donated money to the hospital where my mom worked to add a new wing on and that he owned the house we were renting for the Summer. That much clout and no bragging totally impressed me and it stuck with me for life.
col 3:12-14 says “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” that’s you two, Larry and Hope…thank you for faithfully posting your videos! They are so helpful and I look forward to each new one. xo
You guys are the missing piece from my childhood. We never even said the M word at home. My messy adult situation now tells me I was robbed. I need to be lovingly reparented by such amazing financial transparent people. I feel comforted by you guys. Very authentic hearts for this. I feel educated and hopeful now.
There are perhaps two ways to look at this... We are currently gifting our children money... 1) because it is a time of their lives when they can really use it.. and 2) I'd much rather give it to our well deserved adult children now than spend it all later.. on some nursing home that will blow thru my whole life savings at lightning speed. The later is NOT what I worked hard for all my life.
I'm 71 years old and I've had two major car accidents since this past January. The latest was two weeks ago. This recent accident was not my fault but the other was. I had not planned on getting a new car this year. I definitely did not plan to get a new car twice in four months. I've got no choice - I have to be very frugal. I've heard so many helpful things from the two of you. My next plan is to sell several things which I no longer need. I'm thinking twice and then a third time before purchasing anything. My next car is going to be the lowest price I can find, while making sure it is safe and will last a couple of years. Thankfully, my house is paid for. Thanks for the motivation to keep on trying !
I really appreciate your honesty and transparency. You are humble enough to admit your mistakes. You've learned from your mistakes and have gotten better, and that's what we all should do....I like your emphasis on giving. One of the best parts of frugal living is that it allows you to have money to give to the poor and needy.
I recently go a new to me car. Got one 5 years newer than what I had. It is a 2020. Traded in 2015 model and paid cash for difference. We are extremely pleased. This car only has 42000 miles on it.
Larry and Hope, I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart. God truly has brought me a gift in you both. I have been SO bad about wrapping my head around money and spending, but your videos have taught me what I need to do. The biggest problem? Dollar Tree and other store specials. "Oh, it's only $1 or now, $1.25!" Or at the grocery store, "Oh, it's only such and such". Well, by the time I get to the register, that $1 is now $50! Finally, something in my brain clicked and when I looked at all the money we have spent on those "only's", I am sick to my stomach. No wonder we have not been able to save or have money for something necessary!! Temu??? Oh, my beloved Temu! No more. We have TRUE needs and certain causes that I want to support, and the fact that my frivolous spending has prevented that is mind boggling. So, I want to once again, say THANK YOU and GOD BLESS YOU!!
One week Safeway was giving $5 with a $5 purchase. At first I thought, hmm…, $5 isn’t a lot but then I thought what I could do with $5. I looked at the sales ad, 5lb gold potatoes $1.99, bananas 2lbs $1.18, bag of lentils $1.12, and progreso canned soup $0.89, total $5.12. Worth the trip for a quick stop. I found $0.15 in the bottom of my purse and a penny in the parking lot. Jackpot!
What ever you think about attracts more of the same. I've been with you for just over a year and I've been able to pay $5,400 on a $6,500 balance transfer.. and about that what was I thinking?. I'm grateful that there was not a car accident or natural disaster that prevented me from paying this bill and transfer down because if left with a balance after the one-year interest free time the new interest would have been 29%.. I was doing a balance transfer for credit card that was 11%..looks I will make it.
It's the little and or big things that pop up during our day to day life. The unexpected expenditures that can derail our plans. For example ,car breaks down, need new tires, dental work, house repair work. This seems be a huge one. The list goes on and on. It's shocking! 😥
@@hollynauss6359 All these challenges can happen..... but that makes being financially responsible even that much more important. .. so, there is that.
My goal is to pay off the mortgage so I can retire, and your videos have helped us to save a bundle toward that goal. Unfortunately, our 125 year old house needed serious emergency work. And there went the money. Thank God we had it to take care of the situation. And although it lengthened my retirement timeline, that's okay. I still have my goal in sight and it WILL be obtained!
Thank you for your videos! I have been exhausted lately from working extra instead of letting my body rest from my back injury several months ago. I hope to be debt free by the end of the year, quicker than expected!! WOOHOO!! Praying for contentment is huge & having no spend days.
Frugality and budgeting works! Very recently I purchased an older model pickup and a newer model camping traile,r all with cash because of frugality. I am poised to begin a new chapter in my life by being frugal!
I do agree to a point my sister was very frugal she had her house paid of when she was 30 never travelled or had kids it was all about saving at 40 she died in a car crash she missed so much in life
I'm so sorry for your loss ❤ But with respect, perhaps your sister didn't want to travel or have kids? It seems kind of sad that perhaps you're remembering her only as having this deprived kind of life....I don't mean to be critical..im just wondering whether she wouldve thought of herself like that? God bless you ❤
I just love listening to your frugality. But it's hard for my household to save, cause my daughter and her 4 kids have been living with us for the last 6 years. Hard to save money... but keep those videos coming. You guys are a perfect couple 😊
Great video. Being frugal can allow you to be MORE generous and give your money where it will do the most goid rather than spend it on something you don't need.
I have a goal, when we got our house insurance bill for this new year (July-July) it was 600+ a quarter more! “Inflation” they say. BS we say! Scheduling a meeting and getting that bill RECALCULATED. BE YOUR BEST ADVOCATE.
As younger parents, I appreciate to say less no's....and the challenge ourselves more is hitting home this year!!! Thank you for being a role model couple 😁 And our most important goal is buying a mountain 🏔️ property and keep our current house for a generational home. We give to others at work, giving work time when they are out sick... unfortunately we don't spend much time in the community, so that is the only major way we give to others. We did sleep on a RV purchase and did not pull the trigger, great advice there! I have struggled to find some new frugal advice...we just choose our frugal level...some I am not willing to do, like as a woman, to not shave to save money 💰, nope ... not me. I use a safety razor to accomplish the shaving and save money.
Taking good care of the blade will make it last at least a year. So frugal. Growing up, medicine cabinets had a slot in them to drop the blades into the wall, I remember thinking if someone had to cut out the wall they would have 1,000s of blades to clean up.
As you talked about setting goals, you used the word accomplish. When I write my list I only use the word accomplish. The reason for this is it indicates an effort towards completion in the near term. I found setting goals could remain a distant thought. When I make a list I also categorize the list into must, should, and like. This technique has helped me achieve more than I would have otherwise. Like you, I wish I had implemented this much earlier in my life. While I have always been on the frugal side, I can think of many things I could have done to reach an even greater outcome.
I have never stop trying to live frugal life. I paid off my car than ended in an accident and totaled my car. With the used car price I bought a new car. Back in debt. However I look at it this way when my settlement money comes in I will pay off my car and buy a food truck and start a side hustle for extra income. I’m thinking positively on this road that opened and closed so fast
When we paid off two houses , the one we live in and the one which is my retirement plan and holiday house for now, I also expected a well done! from everyone. I did get that admiration from my parents and two siblings and friends. But some close to us to this day comment on how most people would buy a bigger and better house. Another mentions that they choose lifestyle over frugality ! What !!! Our house is big enough. It is in a great location with great neighbours all around. Why would we move? And as you know, frugality has afforded us peace of mind and the ability to afford the lifestyle we want. Enjoying the arts and the occasional European holiday( from Aus) on a budget of course.
My parents in Germany built two houses and forgot about family altogether so we're at no contact now long ago. They moved frugality to avarice in fact. Meanwhile, my father died, the houses rot and physics already tells you there's no 1 person being able to stay in 2 places at 600 miles distance. My parents didn't get any applause from me for their stupid decisions in life. I wish you well, if you have children.
@@Corinna_Schuett_GER Thankyou. My 2 children will get the current family home in the great beach side location when we retire. We currently take them on school holidays to the holiday house. They love it. When we retire we will most probably move to the holiday house or sell it and buy something closer to the kids who will have our current home.
@@barbarabruce7648 May your children always find a workplace near both of your houses to live in either way and always conform to YOUR will for THEIR lives. Sounds like a super plan also considering the time in between for the houses aging and needing more of repair until you retire. Not speaking of the time in between when your children will have their own families. I know THAT concept well, never complied with it.
Thankyou Corrina. Yes both of my children love our family home. It is by the beach in Sydney and the land is big enough that they can build a second house on it. That's what they plan to do in the future. They are very close. One wants to be a pilot like me and the other a Sydney symphony violinist. They are well on track to achieving their dreams. We bought the holiday house thirty years ago and maintain it well. We go there a lot as the kids love it. That's when we do little maintenance jobs on it.
@@barbarabruce7648 Then let's pray they will both achieve their goals, find a good pilot and high wage violinist profession in Sydney exclusively, never strive and find compatible partners to live in peace side by side. In the meantime, while they will undergo their education and have a family during the many years UNTIL you retire, let's pray they will not need a house to live in (perhaps a tent would be a good idea?) and that they will never change their goals and never have any problems, divorce, financial loss, sickness or death whatsoever to NOT fit into this wonderful planning of yours for their future. May they always fit into your scheme when they grow up and may the force be with you. 🙏
My husband is one for diving in and buying things esp if we need to replace. I always advocate 'sleeping on it' and it has saved us quite a bit. Looking at things when we are less pushed to buy always allows us to research and shop around. Being able to do diy is also helpful. We recently replaced our washer due to bearings failing. Cost us a bit but as we knew it was on the way out we could take time to shop around. Was miffed a bit as our neighbour is much better at diy and bought new bearings for their machine and replaced them himself. Just wish we had been able to do that as it would have saved us even more.
We are just horrible at not spending. We don't buy clothes, electronics, or things for the house. We live on an acreage and there is always some sort of expense and then of course the mortgage. Even if we make a goal 2 days later we have forgotten about it even if it is written down . This is due to the sheer business with the children and the animals. We are frugally minded....paid for cars, 2nd hand clothes, hand me downs etc, but we can't get our debt paid off. There is nothing left at the end of the month.
@@judithvallembois2744 That is one thing we have done since May 2018....tithing. When you say put money away...do you mena for savings? The trouble is there is currently nothing for savings as we are throwing it all at the debt.
I bought a commercial building instead of a house with a 30 year mortgage. No debt no mortgage. 3000 ft². Cheaper than those tiny houses the people think they have to live in.
Generosity should be used wisely, you don't want to give a drunk a drink, nor be enabling the person. Speaking from experience. Please be wise when being generous, always practice discernment 😉.
My problem right now is livng pay check to pay check and digging us out of a hole ontop of keeping up with my husband's Healthcare and wanting us as a family to enjoy life here and now and at same time get out debt and get the house paid off My husband's health has gone downhill sence the heart attack and bypass surgery and we are only in our 30's..... his goal is to have the house paid off before he dies mine is not to be a widow so young or at all, but I jave no control over that indo have control over our budget and frugalness.
Dear friend if you and your husband know Jesus Christ this problem can be solved by receiving eternal life in FUTURE. 🙏 In the meantime, I might pray over the fact that a house is just not worth everything regarding responsability for a family and declining health? If you can get a smaller place to live but with more financial freedom then why waste energy and lifetime on a big home "paid off" while living in everlasting distress? Are you REALLY doing that for yourselves or for the neighbors, out of pride to not get the 'loser' image? The Bible says in 1Tim 6:6-8 "But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry no thing out. *And having food and clothes let us be content."* I pray for your husband to understand this. 🙏
Start at something small. I don't know own what choices you have made just remember that in five years you will be five years older. Start somewhere and you will be in a better place then. It might not solve everything but it will be better.
Write down everything you spend every single day. Write down your fixed costs. Mortgage/rent, electricity, water, food, insurances, car payment etc. Watch frugal channels and spend only on needs, not wants until you're our of debt
Cowgirl has to do this each and every day, the frugality way.....then be accountable for what i did or Cowboy did. S l o w ... D o w n, not running fast. Document each week what we spent , or saved, i love looking back seeing exactly how much was spent ..... you'll be amazed ❤
When I was growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money, and I always felt that I couldn’t do very many things like activities, it had really hurt me even to this day, so don’t base on how much it costs. Another thing that my mom never drove either so she was the one that was home during the day so we never went anywhere either, at the time I thought it was OK but now I know how detrimental all of those things were to my own growth and development It left a lot of scars, money is not an issue now because I have more than and I also drive, but I was not given the same advantages as my peers

Got my utilities today and I have to wonder why I bother to live at my place. $76.63 this month. The only thing I really used was $30.95 electric @16¢ pkwh. Hard to swallow $21+ for sanitation? $10.80 water $10.80 sewer credits used 0 that's right I used so little water I didn't register one credit used. . I'm very tempted to pack my car and live on the road. There's a lot of places I can see for that money. I call it a tax when it's charged use it or not. $45.68 each month just to live where anything I want to do is shot down by permit. They told me if I were caught sleeping in my camper I had 36 hours to remove it. Houses are vacant go down the street they removed the house and nothing is there. We're talking about a town that has been incorporated since before the civil war. There's so many legal issues that crop up living out your car. Carrying weapons, consuming alcohol, getting sick and needed a structure. You have to eat some crow some places so the bear doesn't eat you? $45.68 taxes $30.95 service? If I stayed in ascension parish I would have to pay ~$60 a month just for water. So I am better off here just difficult for a libertarian to accept. The flip I don't work I get money for nothing. It's nothing compared to what I earned but if frugal it's $1K a month over budget easy. So I'm keeping that libertarian lip shut as long as the liberal wallet allows me to snatch crumbs. God is great and he reminds me every day.

Not old enough to have maintenance problems yet, but not new enough to dramatically drop in value the moment you drive it off the car lot...your thoughts Larry?...im sure that at 2-3 years old you're not buying into too many problems yet?
Thank you
Practicing frugality causes us to slow down. When we are busy, we tend to be wasteful. There is so much provision around us if we pay attention to what is already available to us. It's freeing, not restrictive. The actions may be old fashioned, but the message is still in vogue.
Couldn't have said it better, Robin!
So true, it helps us be mindful, resourceful, and creative. Plus, it’s better for the planet 🌎
I think you've mentioned it before that people wont treat you better because you're debt free or making good decisions. I agree with this 100%. The same people who look down their noses will still look down their noses. You have to do things for yourself.
Exactly!
A friend of mine used to say why go out when you run a restaurant? At the time I was cooking both Indian curries and Aussie dishes 😊
col 3:12-14 says “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” that’s you two, Larry and Hope…thank you for faithfully posting your videos! They are so helpful and I look forward to each new one. xo
Thank you for your kind words!
❤ Amen
Awe, thank you so much Lyn.
You guys are the missing piece from my childhood. We never even said the M word at home. My messy adult situation now tells me I was robbed. I need to be lovingly reparented by such amazing financial transparent people. I feel comforted by you guys. Very authentic hearts for this. I feel educated and hopeful now.
God bless you. You're not alone, that's for sure
I gave gifts that were far to generous. Now that we are retired, we had to cut back. It’s easier to scale up than down.
Same
There are perhaps two ways to look at this...
I appreciate you guys so much so kind down to earth willing to listen and don't put people down ❤
Thank you, Lori!
Thank you for you comment, CG. You're learning a very important lesson that took Hope and I years to tackle. Good for you.
Great job!
Excellent!!
You got out just in time. Say no to credit!
It's the little and or big things that pop up during our day to day life. The unexpected expenditures that can derail our plans. For example ,car breaks down, need new tires, dental work, house repair work. This seems be a huge one. The list goes on and on. It's shocking! 😥
Same here.
I sometimes barely make it with a job 😕 and 3 more side hustles.
When the emergencies total more than the emergency fund and the ability to refund that emergency fund can't keep up.
Attitude may not be EVERYTHING... but it sure is a BIG part of the picture. Good for you. 👍
Thank you for your videos! I have been exhausted lately from working extra instead of letting my body rest from my back injury several months ago. I hope to be debt free by the end of the year, quicker than expected!! WOOHOO!! Praying for contentment is huge & having no spend days.
Attitude is everything.
Frugality and budgeting works! Very recently I purchased an older model pickup and a newer model camping traile,r all with cash because of frugality. I am poised to begin a new chapter in my life by being frugal!
I do agree to a point my sister was very frugal she had her house paid of when she was 30 never travelled or had kids it was all about saving at 40 she died in a car crash she missed so much in life
I'm so sorry for your loss ❤
But with respect, perhaps your sister didn't want to travel or have kids? It seems kind of sad that perhaps you're remembering her only as having this deprived kind of life....I don't mean to be critical..im just wondering whether she wouldve thought of herself like that? God bless you ❤
I just love listening to your frugality. But it's hard for my household to save, cause my daughter and her 4 kids have been living with us for the last 6 years. Hard to save money... but keep those videos coming. You guys are a perfect couple 😊
Can you get them involved with saving too?
Always wonderful to see you both. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
Thank you, Barbara!
You guys are truly a power couple.
Great video. Being frugal can allow you to be MORE generous and give your money where it will do the most goid rather than spend it on something you don't need.
Well said.
Thank you all so much. I really appreciate your advice and love your channel. ❤️🙏🏻👍🏻
Larry and Hope you were young and human. When I was young I had impossible goals.👋💕🙂🇦🇺
Happy Christmas 🎄
Hello from Bristol, Va.
Thank you again for inspiring & encouraging me to keep on keeping on the frugality path!❤
You are so welcome, Rebecca! Thank you.
“Look for another river.” Love it. So encouraging. ❤️
Thank you, Christina.
Thank you for the reminder about generosity. It's an area I need to grow in. Actually, many areas I need to work on.
You two do absolutely model “big umbrella” openness. I appreciate you both for that.
Thanks! That means a lot to us.
I have a goal, when we got our house insurance bill for this new year (July-July) it was 600+ a quarter more! “Inflation” they say. BS we say! Scheduling a meeting and getting that bill RECALCULATED. BE YOUR BEST ADVOCATE.
if you make a point of blessing someone better koff than you, this knocks jealousy and envy out of the ball park.
I'm eagerly awaiting a video on Larry's review of retirement 😊
Your messages are so informative and common sense! I love the weekly plan/gratitude/accomplishment task. Very useful. Thanks!🌷🌷
Thank you, Corrie!
Thank you for this timely video! We appreciate you two!
Bless you, Glenda!
Giving is better than receiving
Thank you both for being "big umbrella" people!
We contacted Creekmur wealth management because of your channel!! Best decision ever!! There was A LOT we didn’t know!!
I am always looking for new frugal ideas. Love when you share ideas from the viewers.
Thank you!
Google and you tube shows you about how to do everything !
Thank you for this big picture on frugality :-))
Great video. I really appreciate your insights ❤
Will have a vacation next month a couch curtains
I think frugality relates to intelligence. Smart people are frugal people. Tend to be anyway. Question for you - do your glasses match on purpose?
The matching glasses was a total accident.
Put away money at the beginning of the month. God will help you if you ask. Ask for wisdom and help in each situation. Tithing works! Best wishes!
@@judithvallembois2744 That is one thing we have done since May 2018....tithing. When you say put money away...do you mena for savings? The trouble is there is currently nothing for savings as we are throwing it all at the debt.
Giving buffer discretionary spending is important
Great content as always Larry and Hope (:
good video-keep ém coming
I bought a commercial building instead of a house with a 30 year mortgage. No debt no mortgage. 3000 ft². Cheaper than those tiny houses the people think they have to live in.
Generosity should be used wisely, you don't want to give a drunk a drink, nor be enabling the person. Speaking from experience. Please be wise when being generous, always practice discernment 😉.
Love this ,,
I have most of my needs not wants andi am happy taking care of what i have and also eating what i have
Well said
My problem right now is livng pay check to pay check and digging us out of a hole ontop of keeping up with my husband's Healthcare and wanting us as a family to enjoy life here and now and at same time get out debt and get the house paid off
My husband's health has gone downhill sence the heart attack and bypass surgery and we are only in our 30's..... his goal is to have the house paid off before he dies mine is not to be a widow so young or at all, but I jave no control over that indo have control over our budget and frugalness.
This is an excellent video. Really important life stuff. Brilliant.
Prioritize ❤😊
Frugality is an individual journey there is no right or wrong

I made so many mistakes and poor decisions. Where to even start?
Start at something small. I don't know own what choices you have made just remember that in five years you will be five years older. Start somewhere and you will be in a better place then. It might not solve everything but it will be better.
Write down everything you spend every single day. Write down your fixed costs. Mortgage/rent, electricity, water, food, insurances, car payment etc. Watch frugal channels and spend only on needs, not wants until you're our of debt
Thank you for the reminder. Money does not provide respect. April
Cowgirl has to do this each and every day, the frugality way.....then be accountable for what i did or Cowboy did.
S l o w ... D o w n, not running fast.
Document each week what we spent , or saved, i love looking back seeing exactly how much was spent ..... you'll be amazed ❤
Can you send me the ebook please. thank you.

Hello, everyone.hi,ware family
Hey, Rochelle! It's good to see you!
tough month ahead- i may end up homeless
When I was growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money, and I always felt that I couldn’t do very many things like activities, it had really hurt me even to this day, so don’t base on how much it costs. Another thing that my mom never drove either so she was the one that was home during the day so we never went anywhere either, at the time I thought it was OK but now I know how detrimental all of those things were to my own growth and development
It left a lot of scars, money is not an issue now because I have more than and I also drive, but I was not given the same advantages as my peers
Larry looks too young to be retired 🤗
Whatever you think about attracts more of the same
Your dress looks fresh & crisp. Your husband could do with a fresh crisp shirt. I say this with love & caring.😍
@UnderTheMedium, do you and Hope still use the Fetch app to scan receipts? I watched a Dec 2022 video of yours called "How Do Frugal People Save Money Every Month?", but of course the Fetch code for getting 5,000 points on the first receipt scanned is no longer active.
Is this still a good app to use to scan receipts on the go? THANKS
Yep. I still use Fetch all the time. So sorry you missed the 5000 points. They'll be sponsoring another video in July. But, I don't know how many points they will offer. We do have our own affiliate referral code which should get you 100 points. REFERRAL CODE: 3FUV4U at www.fetchrewards.com/
I have money and I still dumpster dive for fun, food, just a shame to see animals thrown out because of an arbitrary date.
I’m hoping you meant items or food rather than animals… though that is awful too.
