I wonder if he ever admits to being sick of playing a basic shuffle rhythm for so many blues songs. Most of SRV double trouble music was shuffle rhythm - albeit a very infectious heavy shuffle.
I saw SRV play for the last time. I then saw Kenny Wayne at the Ryman last February. Chris was playing drums for KWS. The first time I had seen him since Aug 26, 1990. It was pretty cool to see him again. Then, in April I saw Robert Cray for the first time since that August night as well.
The is Chris "Whipper" Layton to you! Met him with the Cheif Tommy Shannon at the Aragon ballroom on Texas Flood Tour we rode our motorcycles down to the brawlroom and saw an amazing man!! SRV I still miss him today!!!
I ran into Jimmy in a restaurant. He stopped by our table to shoot the breeze. Super nice humble guy. He was there with his family going to a west coast car show. It looked like his wife and daughters told him he wasn't going without them. heh.
Last time I saw these two masters, I was front row at the House of Blues on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, New Years Eve, 2001. Marcia Ball opened the show for Jimmy Vaughn. The Rev. Billy G. was in the balcony with Terry Bradshaw and some sharp dressed women! Billy came down for a couple song encore. It was an awesome night!
How many years of playing do these gentlemen have behind them? Or rather, how many hundreds of years? And yet they have the joy of playing. That's what music does. For everyone, including us listeners.🎸🎸🎹🥁
On this date in '81, saw 22,oops ZZTOP the first of 6 times throughout the years. This was the El Loco tour, in Dallas @ The Wintergarden Ballroom on John West Rd. Two shows -7:00, then 11:00. The next day Billy Bob's Texas in Foat Wuth. No opening act, that 7'o clock show was badass, l'm here ta told ya!
Jimmy looks as if he has aged 10 years overnight but the playing is still great. Lovely to see Layton on drums, who looks younger than he did back in the 80's.
Stevie was asked who his favorite guitar player was and he said Jimmy, he can lay back and show you how good he is, but me I gotta pull out every trick in the book and I'm not where he's at.
Eye worked at several of the Thundercloud Subs locations Austin mid-eighties and made Chris Layton a sandwich, though eye didn't recognize him until after he left. As eye handed his order, he had a look about him as if wondering he'd been made. Perhaps my opportunity to gush over a local star was missed, lol. Saw Stevie w/ Double Trouble at Auditorium Shores just after Lou Ann Barton had left the line-up...aah historical moments.
I not eye. Not trying to be a dick but if you’re anything like me you’ll appreciate the mistakes being pointed out. That way you never make them again. That’s the way I look at it anyway. Cheers
@benallmark9671 uh oh- grammar nazi, lol. Just glad for your interest in the best music of the southwest, hope to bump into you at one of the few shows that interest me these days.
@benallmark9671 uh oh- grammar nazi, lol. Just glad to know another lover of south Texas music. Hope to bump into you at one of the few acts interested in these days.
I am a lead guitar player, but please, guitar TH-cam... not only is Chris Layton there, but so is Mike Flanigin.... I know we think everything is about the guitar, but how about some love for the bands they are in... oh, and I have video of Chris Layton teaching me how to play Testify on drums so I could relay it to our drummer... Double Trouble were total sweethearts to my brother and I when we opened for them.
Negative comments are not needed…..or wanted. Dont see you being asked to play at Antones…and if you played worth a darn, you’d know playing live isn’t going to be perfect”tone”. Get over yourself and enjoy these guys while they are still with us…
Absolutely. There's something to be said for having your own style and playing with honesty and authenticity. Not everybody can do that. Many people just regurgitate licks.
Just go back and listen to the prime years. This isn't good. Someone needs to stick a shiv in Father Time. I'm 65 and I know the reality of the generation ahead of me and what's coming.
@@newenglandguitarman3345 I had no idea. i thought it was a refence to lester butler and company. My guess is he is a huge fan like the rest of us. Live at the king king.
Like anything with Billy Gibbons. I never have really gotten this double stop riff that he is playing at about 4:00 . I have heard him do it in a lot of solos. To me it never quite fits. 🤔
Although I respect the man because of SRV, I’ve never been impressed with JV as a player. Anything I’ve ever heard from him was so lackluster, I’m puzzled how he was able to be so well known, especially with his generic playing.
@@mattrogers1946Stevie was a good brother that was always trying to promote and help his brother out in any way he could. But I’ll never bash Jimmy’s playing. He’s not trying to dazzle anyone with shredding or speed. But neither does Keith Richards or David Gilmour. Or Mr Gibbons, for that matter.
He's older now and has either deliberately chosen to play in this slower style, or has some arm, hand, finger issues that are affecting his playing. There is no doubt that his playing now is slower and less fluid than his playing 40 years ago. But, if you go back and listen to the early T-Birds albums, Jimmie was tremendous. Fast when he needed to be, and fluid always. The T-Birds (and Stevie) almost singlehandedly revived classic blues, and Jimmie's influence is profound and far reaching. You would be hard pressed to find a straight ahead blues player in the last 50 years who would say that Jimmie was not a fantastic player. I suppose his appeal is "limited" because of the genre he works in. I'm sure he doesn't matter much to shredders, metal heads, and who knows what other up to the minute styles I can't even name. But if you like pure American blues and R&B, he's the real deal. If you know you know.....
These two boys made a lot of happiness for all...still doing it.
And a lot of money for themselves
The Immortal Billy F. Gibbons keepin' it going well into his 70s. We're lucky to have him with us.
So nice to see Chris playing drums as well! Look forward to KWS with Chris whenever we can see them! Thank you for a wonderful video :)
Chris Layton on Drums !! Hell yeah . Happy New year you guys !! 😎👍
One line Stevie said a lot.. "Chris Layton on the drums" God I miss that.
The whipper in action.
I thought that was Chris Layton.

One of the greats....Rev Willie G Jimmy can't play and never could.

Chris Layton on drums & Mike Flanigin on vocals/ B-3
Finnegan lol 🤠🎹

Still praying for Jimmie…I’m sure he misses his brother in a big way!
My exact thought adding wishing Stevie was playing too
Austin Blues power

JV master? Think you mean his brother. ;-)
Thank you very much for recording and posting this for us all....
Thanks for posting this! Love it!
That is called having fun! What a jam!
I fell in love with Jimmie’s playing in the early 90’s. Him not trying to impress you is really impressive!
Why does his left hand look like its working more to hit chords or notes then most players?
Excellent two of my favorites !!!! 🎸🎸
God Bless Ya Both.
😊Mine too!
Awesome 😎 brought a big smile on my face after work 👍
Billy's 75 and still got it goin on......love these guys. Jimmy awesome too.
saw em the next day in ft worth! killer concert!!!
Layton on Drums!!! Total restraint here playing traditional Blues!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
It can't possibly be any more Texan than that...
I love the blues!!!!
Chris Layton's unmistakeable Jump Shuffle!
These two guys have known each other pushin 60 years. They need to d this more often.

Chris Layton, Mike Flanigin and another guitarist opened for ZZ Top at the Pearl in Vegas a few months ago. Great show.
Awesome display of some Texas Blues!
It’s taken me 30 plus years but I’m finally starting to understand why Jimmie Vaughn was Stevie’s favorite guitar player.
Billy, classy guy. Love this jam
That was truly cool.
So damn awesome
This must be one of the better retirement homes in America.
It's a bog-standard Friday night in Austin. Also, David Grissom has a residency on Tuesday nights at a bar in a strip mall.
Yep, some pretty basic sh*t being played here. Jimmie looks a bit long in the tooth, and Billy has always looked that way...
Thank you ❤
Wanna move to Texas❤
Sounds amazing.
Merry Christmas indeed!

2 grandes !!!!!!!!!
Jimmie looks pretty good!
Up close and personalble, nice.
EXCELLENT !
I sure wanted to go see this show, just couldn't find the time.

This song is called bad boy by Eddie Taylor. Legend of the highest order
Got it goin' on at Antones! Just a little blues
Who remembers the Red Devils?

I was just about to ask who that was on drums, because I liked what I was hearing, and then I saw him. . . Chris f'ing Layton!
I've got no one to talk to but the blues
I got dem dirty ol' sports bar blues ...
Can anybody tell me what kind of guitar Billy is playing here ?
Spelt Jimi Von

Anyone know the story with Billy's guitar? Looks like it has a Gretsch logo and Flanigin played in The Red Devils. ???

Arguably the two BEST living American guitarists, if not in the WORLD. I'm surprised that stage didn't just tip-over, with so much talent on it!

Was there a bass player? Or was the keyboard playing the bass parts?

Bad Boy by Eddie "Playboy" Taylor.

Geez, Billy, enough of the hyperload of prop amps!
Magnatone probably sets them up for every gig as per his endorsement reqs.
