      I'm Latin American, they don't even allow us to import tools:(

    • @Deorse
      @Deorse 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well about that... you see for some of us they are expensive. For the initial cost of buying every single one of those tools, I simply do not have $1500-$2000 to drop even on Harbor Freight grade metal working tools. I barely had enough money to go out a buy one of their cheapest flux coated wire fed mig welders with basic accessories and safety gear. I still don't have the money to go out and purchase an English wheel. Those other tools like what were shown in the video such as the sheet metal hammers and die sets, I can't find those anywhere, not even Harbor Freight for that matter, not even The Home Depot or Auto Zone sells hammer and die sets. I still have no clue where I'm suppose to find giant sheets of 18 to 16 gauge thick sheet metal that doesn't already have shit prestamped in it. Not exactly an item Walmart has in stock. Also you need a safe place where you can do hot works, preferably a shop. I know if I got caught attempting to do any welding out in the parking lot of where I live, I'd probably get into a lot of trouble with the base fire marshal, base police department, and the building manager. That's why I haven't even gotten a chance to use my welder yet.
      Trust me this is a long overdue project that I've been wanting to take on for the last 7+ years, I just simply don't have the money, tools or material. It is so much easier and cheaper to get wood and to take on elaborate carpentry projects than it is to get into the metal artisan, craft, and metal forgery.

      Nero Smith don't let that stop you! You be surprised with what you can make from bits you can find lying around. A simple hammer,any bit of metal as a punch and a hollowed tree stump is enough to get you going.

    • @porkpie3465
      @porkpie3465 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly right. Though this is interesting to watch as if it were a "how it's made" episode, most people will never EVER own this type of equipment and are not willing to fork over a few grand just to make a spartan helmet. Not to mention the need for ample shop space, which not every one has. On top of that, sheet metal is got dam expensive. Best to just buy the prop on ebay or whatever.

    When you were adding the bead around the face guard, how hard was it to correct where your beads overlapped each other at hard angles? It seems to me like rolling a bead to meet another would never quite meet right. Am I wrong, or is there some technique to fix it?

    Great work mate,just found you and new subs. For a great patina look try heating up to dull red and then buffing with a brass brush in angle grinder. The brass brush leaves an antiquated brass/bronze look to the work.

    How time consuming or more difficult is it to build one more authentic in thicker metal? 18 GA seems to be the metal thickness used for ancient Corinthian Greek helmet remakes. I was curious if thicker metal is possible?

      Yes -ride a motorcycle wearing one of your helmets, Can you put an inner Styrofoam helmet just like an off the shelf motorcycle helmet? It doesn't need to be DOT approved, but should have some Styrofoam . Thanks I wonder if you could purchase an inner lining or maybe I could adapt an inner lining taken from an off the shelf motorcycle helmet. Yeah, good luck trying find sheets of bronze lying around. Just trying to find plain regular pieces mild steel of sheet metal is hard enough. BTW you can't mig or stick weld bronze or brass, more than likely you're going to need a tig welder (which super fucking expensive) and lots of training and experience to learn how to properly use it to make strong, clean welds.
