Cordyline australis, commonly known as the cabbage tree, is an iconic plant found in many gardens, especially in New Zealand. I look at this plant and other cordylines that can be used in landscaping. We also briefly delve into the traditional uses of the plant used by Maori and European settlers, discovering how its common name originates.

Thank you for this intro to the New Zealand Cabbage tree. Just discovered/ identified lurking in the back garden in a pot. Very much neglected and clinging to life....now that I have identified it am now set upon a mission to restore it to good health. Many thanks for your helpful advice, much appreciated.
