  • Is there a plant for exotic for garden cultivation than a palm tree? Huge evergreen leaves, thick textured trunks and sometimes exotic fruits make palm trees a highly desirable plant for many gardeners. Growers around the world search out special palms species to add to their garden to create a tropical style.
This video looks at some of the Palms growing in Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens in Dorset, UK (Zone 9b). The gardens curator David Pearce talks through a selection of hardy palms that are able to provide tropical foliage in gardens that experience cooler winters. These cold tolerant palm trees will thrive in temperatures below freezing and could be eventually grow into tree sized proportions! We also look at rare palm trees, some of which are growing surprisingly fast or showing unexpected tolerance to colder weather. Amongst these rare and select species you’ll find enormous palm leaves, silver foliage and naturally smooth stems that transport you straight to the tropics.

Great video. That guy is very knowledgeable about palms. Windmills are right up my alley here and are one of, if not the most cold hardy trunking palm for the southeast US. I thoroughly enjoyed this, thanks for sharing! 😊❤

I have several of the Fortunei in my yard, all around my house, as they're native here. The Butias are also all around the neighborhood, including town hall and the elementary school. I have noticed several other palm types up and down the coast, but haven't figured out what they are yet. Maybe now that I've seen this, I'll be able to identify them if they're one of these types. I'm going to try to strip one of my Fortunei and see how it looks.

Martianus should not be anywhere close to fortunei in terms of hardiness.... a bit of caution is well needed.
    The brahea is magic though.
Make a few more like this craig. Love this one!

Really good video guys. The brahea the outstanding palm in the collection. Just superb. Followed closely by the martianus. I'm growing a fortunei x Martianus up here outdoors to see whether it'll tolerate our temps, the standard martianus wont. Hopefully some martianus features will develop but with some more of the fortunei mother plant toughness

Great video. When I visited I thought the Brahea was a stand out palm even better in real life.
As lots of the palms are so close and the Trachys self seed I wonder if Martiianus has crossed with the Fortuneiis and self seeded.

To answer his question, canary island date palms do produce edible, and reportedly tastey, fruits. They are, however, unlikely to fruit in the UK due to our climate.

@@GrowParadise It might seem off topic, but do you happen to know if colocasias can set seed in the UK? I just got a few pink chinas and was wondering if growing multiple types could lead to hybrids. Would it be viable in an unheated, but insulated greenhouse setting?

    • @natewilson2378
