  • In this video I discuss the care requirements of Cordyline australis (Cabbage tree) and I also go into detail about where its from and how it grows. Cordyline australis is a unique tree from New Zealand which can give a tropical palm tree appearance in climates which are usually too cold for palm trees. As long as temperatures in your area do not regularly go below -10C (14F), Cordyline australis is an easy to grow plant that is low maintenance and will grow well in most gardens. Cordyline australis can survive colder temperatures than -15C (5F) however all growth above the ground will usually be damaged and the plant will regrow from the remaining roots.

    I live in South Australia. I planted two pinkish/purplish ones a few years ago in direct sun and they've done amazing. They don't mind hot dry summers (I do water garden once a week in really hot weather) , and fortunately we don't get much frost here.

    hello i just watched your video on how to clean a rubber plant, very useful tip😊😊. I know you made it a long time ago but could you update us on it

    • @Gardeningat58N

      Yes, I actually just uploaded a video, it's no longer as large as I had to prune it to move house and then it suffered from frost damage, but it is regrowing well again. If you search my channel you will find a couple of other videos about it, most can be found by searching 'rubber plant' but one is on the moving house video.

    Excellent and very informative video. Thank You. At what point in the winter or forecast temperature would you apply winter protection?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, It depends on the variety, for coloured varieties ( red, pink, variegated etc) they need protection with temperatures below -3C (27F). Most green varieties are much hardier and are usually fine down to about -8C (18F) however make sure you unwrap them when the temperatures rise as they can easily rot if they are wrapped for too long and don't get fresh air. I find the hardiest green varieties get leaf damage around -10C(14F) and will loose their stems below -15C (5F), but usually regrow from the roots.

      @@Gardeningat58N Brilliant. Thank you. I planted a 6' green one last May, so hoping for some more height each year, and eventually a tall clean trunk. A few yellow spot -patches on some leaves, any specific feed recommended for them? First year it flowered and looks like it has grown multi heads, so hopefully it establishes and thrives. One thing I have noticed this March was the very young central leaves broke away from a couple of the heads. Hope that's not a worrying sign....

    Hi. My plant flowered last year and has now grown five separate trunks from a point on the main trunk 4 feet from the ground. Will the main trunk keep growing upwards so the point where the new trunks rises higher?

    Great advice on this video! do you know why they sometimes have brown spots on their leaves?? My cordyline has brown leaves on bottom and the green ones are full with spots 😔 .

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brown leaf spots are usually caused by a fungus, make sure the cordyline is in a sunny position so that it's leaves can dry quickly after a rain shower. Over or underwatering can also make the situation worse as a weak plant will struggle to fight off an infection.

    Hello! Thank you for your video! I have recently moved to a house with a huge cordyline in the back garden. It is probably 8m tall with 3 trunks and multiple branches higher up. The neighbours want to have it cut down due to it shading their garden which I obviously want to avoid. If we cut it midway through the trunks at perhaps 4m, would it grow back from that point? And how long would it take? Thank you so much!

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, if you cut the trunk it will respond by resprouting just below the cut, it may take a month or two, but will will send out several new branches from the trunk. It will be leafy again by the end of the growing season but it won't have large branches for a few years.

      @@Gardeningat58N Thank you so much for your answer - that's really helpful advice! When would be the best time of year to cut back the Cordyline? We live in the south of the UK

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aliceb1706 Ideally late spring would be best as the weather is warm enough for the plant to quickly heal and you have the whole growing season for it to re-sprout and grow new leaves.

    Great advice my Cordyline Australis leaves has turn yellow twice into top of trunk ,I cut the bad leaves away.I have the Cordyline on raised bed with 50/50 natural soil and john innes no.2 ,what would you feed it or any ideas where I'm going wrong 🤔

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like its a lack of feed or a lack of drainage. Does the raised bed have a liner? and if so does it have an unsealed bottom or plenty of drainage holes to allow excess water to flow out? John Innes no. 2 is a heavy soil based compost and tends to drain badly so this might not be helping with the drainage, Cordylines like well drained soil. If it's a feed issue sprinkle a handful of growmore fertiliser over the surface of the soil in spring, feeding in autumn or winter won't help as the weather is too cold for growth.

      @@PaulConnor100 John Innes No.1 is a seed and cuttings mix and so is very low in nutrients, so it sounds like it's a feed issue. Fertilising the bed in spring should fix the problem.
