Mike Wilson is a musical genius...just ask him.
Al Jardine and the Wilson brothers have been carrying Mike Love for well over half a century now. Most of the people reading this will have better pipes than that guy does.
I've always felt that carl, dennis, and al had played their roles better than mike did. Dennis was like the wild mascot of the band while carl was the glue that kept the band together. Al was the guy who help come up with riff, melodies, and often go to an old musical source. Without those 3, brian wouldn't be this genius we love. Mike is just the guy who comes up with lyrics and be the embodiment of everything that's not cool. And let's not forget bruce who is just mike's bitch.

Sometimes it takes conflicting personalities to get the most out of a creative group. Mike is the conservative beach boy, still in love with the mid-60s myth of being a young guy in California, riding the surf, driving a hot car, and meeting girls. He has kept this "endless summer" vibe alive during the band's endless touring (without Brian) over the decades. Audiences love those old surf tunes to this day! I was at a Beach Boys concert in Vancouver in the 90s and the place was packed -- largely by kids who weren't born when songs like "Surfin USA" came out. But the kids were totally into them! Without Mike Love I doubt if the Beach Boys would have survived past the mid-80s when Brian disappeared for years. I know Mike has an abrasive personality and he resisted Brian's maturing into a brilliant composer, but I still think Mike deserves credit for staying true to the band's vision and keeping it a going concern, spreading the joy of the California lifestyle around the world.

@r_man Brian and Murray conspired to sell Sea of Tunes and to cut Mike out. After Murray died in 1973 Brian was solely responsible for omitting Mike's name from the credits of the songs which they co-wrote, something which Brian said in court that he regretted very much. What it basically amounted to was Brian pocketing an enormous amount of money each year that should have been Mike's. It's difficult to say exactly how much, but Mike's royalty payments increased by about $1million dollars a year after he won his lawsuit against Brian. It seems it's by no means clear who was the bigger bastard in the relationship between Brian and Mike.

Murray was their original manager so it is very possible. But that doesn't explain Mike's nasty comments at every concert about "his genius cousin". I am greatfull to Mike for keeping the band alive and at always at a perfect performance level to this day. They always sound great.

Idk but they fired their dad as manager pretty early on so it wasn't him. I think they just figured he was part of the Beach Boys, he sung well on a lot of songs. I think by the time he really started to conflict with the band, Brian Wilson was having major issues with his head and with drugs so he didn't have nearly as much creative control and by the late 60s was no longer the main force behind the Beach Boys.

@now It was chilling to read the transcript of Stan Love and Rocky Pamplin (Brian's bodyguard who was screwing Brian's wife) browbeating Brian over using heroin and poisoning him against his brothers Dennis and Carl who they insisted wanted to drag him down and that they'd been doing it to him all along, since '66 - trying to fuck up his head and get him involved with drugs. This was in '78 when Stan Love was recording everything Brian said. Those people treated him like a child or a mental defective, all in Brian's best interests, of course. But the sick pleasure they were taking was obvious. His brothers may have shared his mania for drugs, but it's plain to me who were the greater transgressors.

@r_man Brian and Murray conspired to sell Sea of Tunes and to cut Mike out.
After Murray died in 1973 Brian was solely responsible for omitting Mike's name from the credits of the songs which they co-wrote, something which Brian said in court that he regretted very much.
What it basically amounted to was Brian pocketing an enormous amount of money each year that should have been Mike's. It's difficult to say exactly how much, but Mike's royalty payments increased by about $1million dollars a year after he won his lawsuit against Brian.
It seems it's by no means clear who was the bigger bastard in the relationship between Brian and Mike.
@@paulcasey6759 I thought Murray slighted both Brian and Love by selling the rights to the songs. I don't think Brian was a part of that. He must have owned the rights to do that. Murray was their original manager so it is very possible. But that doesn't explain Mike's nasty comments at every concert about "his genius cousin". Just pure jealousy from the guy that added high school level car lyrics to some of the best pop melodies and harmonies ever written. I am greatfull to Mike for keeping the band alive and at always at a perfect performance level to this day. They always sound great.
@@rman52 Brian testified that he was somewhat complicit in screwing Mike out of royalties. It was mostly Murray, but Brian was aware of it and repeatedly sidestepped getting involved on Mike’s behalf with Murray.

Idk but they fired their dad as manager pretty early on so it wasn't him. I think they just figured he was part of the Beach Boys, he sung well on a lot of songs. I think by the time he really started to conflict with the band, Brian Wilson was having major issues with his head and with drugs so he didn't have nearly as much creative control and by the late 60s was no longer the main force behind the Beach Boys.

So Mike Love was the front man, and a lead singer of the Beach Boys, and as i understand it wrote some of their lyrics. He wasnt a genius like Brian but crucial to the groups success. Give him his due. He could be weird and a jerk at times but he was a leader of the group.

True!! Plus with Brian being a nut bag. If it wasn’t for Mike Keeping the name of The Beach Boys going. Who know how far into obscurity they could have fallen? Mike wasn’t the genius like Brian musically, but he kept the band going and kept them visible for their revival in the 80’s.

@@kretopi123 Well, you'd count all the Beach Boys stuff he was a part of. Your point doesn't make much sense. Hardly any of the Beach Boys solo material was all that successful commercially, regardless of it's quality. Probably the best solo album any of them ever did was Pacific Ocean Blue by Dennis and even that took time to be regarded as a classic.

Everyone knocks mike love but his voice on the surfing songs works well for that type of music. He does have a knack for writing good lyrics and hooks. He's not completely talentless as most of you think.

All the Mike Love hate. I get it, they have a contentious relationship, but this is only one side of the story. Brian Wilson decided to go public with his side, but Mike Love kept his feelings private. Don't get me wrong, I love Brian Wilson, but Mike Love is also a crucial component of the Beach Boys.

@now It was chilling to read the transcript of Stan Love and Rocky Pamplin (Brian's bodyguard who was screwing Brian's wife) browbeating Brian over using heroin and poisoning him against his brothers Dennis and Carl who they insisted wanted to drag him down and that they'd been doing it to him all along, since '66 - trying to fuck up his head and get him involved with drugs.
This was in '78 when Stan Love was recording everything Brian said. Those people treated him like a child or a mental defective, all in Brian's best interests, of course. But the sick pleasure they were taking was obvious. His brothers may have shared his mania for drugs, but it's plain to me who were the greater transgressors.

It is well documented that Dennis and Mike hated each other, to the point of knock down drag outs. I have always said that Mike was one of the luckiest people on earth to be associated with the Beach Boys. He would have NEVER had made it on his own "talent".
