I can't dislike Brian and some of the things Love does and did were not cool in my opinion, but acting like Love was inconsequential to the band is absurd. Mike love talks rubbish by saying stick to formular , you look at Bob Dylan for example he didn't stick the formular he went from Acoustic guitar to Electrical guitar. Not only is it missing the most integral link of the band, Brian Wilson, but it’s missing Dennis, Carl and Al. Mike Love didn’t like Pet Sounds, and only wanted to chase the money. Pet Sounds is regarded as one of the best albums of all time. That should tell anyone who isn’t convinced on this issue everything you need to know.
If it weren't for Brian's great mind, then they would never have been remembered today. Pet sounds is #2 of the 500 greatest albums of all time on Rolling Stones, and that was ALL Brian Wilson's producing and writing. Even though time can't go back and finish SMiLE, at least Brian is still alive and doing his own thing.

Hell , thinking about it , David Marks was a founder and driving the surf venue .knowing what I know now , love and his band are mute to me ! You gotta include Al as a beach boy he did all of Brian's falsetto's for many years on the road and some would say that Brian's falsetto's never sounded better than when Al sang them .

Gumshoe, Brian was always in the band, until mike sued to take control AFTER Carl died! Even then Brian was still willing to tour with the "group." Brian is so much sought after these days for the incredible amount of experience he has, producing, writing, mixing and producing.

Harmonies are the key, they were complex, too much sp for love. Carl was the glue that held the band together, not mike. Carl was the music director, not mike. Other than Brian in the early years had the best voice, not mike. Carl played guitars, mike played a tambourine. Carl wrote some awesome tunes, Dennis was better at that than carl.
The Beach Boys without Brian Wilson is nothing but a knock off version. The original group is who I fell in love with. When Denny and Carl died something inside of me died. I followed them from the beginning. To be the Beach Boys you gotta have them work as a team. I am old now too. And wiser. Its time for the hatchet to be buried.Bring Brian back to the fold. Miss them very much.

I so loved the Beach Boys as a teenager, in the ‘60’s! Best times & listening to the “ORIGINAL BEACH BOYS” was the absolute best! They were one of my favorite groups as a kid & I have seen them preform( I am referring to the original members of this phenomenal group from the 1960’s) in concert, multiple times! Loved them so much! I have seen them numerous times through the yrs. I just saw them only a couple yrs ago, at The Eastern States Exposition ( biggest fair on east coast!) in West Spfld., Ma, Mohegan Sun Casino & various venues in area( Florida too)! Naturally with Carl & Dennis sadly passed THE BEACH BOYS will never ever sound the same, or “BE” the same, as it was in their hey days when all the originals were there! I even saw them play at Symphony Hall in Spfld., Ma when Glenn Campbell had stepped in to play guitar when I was 13 or 14! I loved their music then & still love listening to their music now! The band now w/ only one, possibly two( when I saw them through the yrs.) is great to hear those familiar songs I have always loved. It will never sound the same or be the same without the originals naturally but great hearing those first familiar cords of Fun! Fun! Fun!, SURFING USA, IN MY ROOM, or SLOOP JOHN B. Instantly I am transported back in time to innocent, happy times of my teenage yrs! Wonderful friends & such happy memories come flooding back, as I listen to those favorite songs!!! Bands have problems, tension between members, plain and simple. This band has always been mismanaged in spite of itself. But we still are die hard fans.
You obviously haven’t listened to many drummers in your world. I will concur he was amongst the finest pounders and beaters. He didn’t play the drums, he assaulted them and keeping a steady beat often was of secondary concern. Carl once candidly said that in the musicianship chain, he was the weak link and sometimes the band had to tune him out to maintain a song’s consistent rhythm.
Amazing, You never know anyone until you live with them, and sometimes not. I have most all of the original 45 RPM records including Good Vibrations. Great songs. My favorite is Don't worry Baby. I have the 1965 Beach Boys Christmas Album which my sister bought new for my birthday in 1965.
Brian is definitely not "livid" about Mike Love using the Beach Boys name....Brian knows his name alone will sell more tickets by himself than Mike Love's Beach Boys would. Also he gets a nice paycheck on royalties or back ends...any my point is that I HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt that Brian even gives a shit about Mike keeping the name...it's such a common tale...a band breaks up, one of them tours as a solo act playing the songs they wrote in their former bands...then there's the other band member who keeps the name and almost always has a new roster if not the only original member and those kinda bands are always worse than the solo artist who broke off from said band
Not exactly accurate. I've seen many comments on different posts talking about Mike Love owning The Beach Boys’ name. Actually, he doesn't own it. The company formed by the band "Brother Records Incorporated", which is owned equally by Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, and the estate of Carl Wilson, own The Beach Boys name, and trademark. (Dennis Wilson's share was bought out by the other four after his death to pay outstanding debts left behind.) However, since Al Jardine once quit the band, and was a salary employee when he came back in the early 1960s, even though he owns the name equally with Brian, and Mike he's not allowed to use The Beach Boys likeness himself, if Brian or Mike is using it at the same time. Also Mike and Al had begun a pretty bad fued over Al wanting to do some symphonic shows using The Beach Boys name in Carl's very last days. Mike vowed not to include him in his band because of that. Only Brian Wilson, and Mike Love can tour together, or separately under "The Beach Boys" name, not at the same time though. Once Carl died Brian had already begun to establish himself as a profitable touring act on his own. So it was decided (by majority vote, Brian and Carl's estate voted yes, Al voted no, and would sue Mike to be able to use the name himself but would lose the lawsuit,) that Mike would use the trademark Beach Boys name to continue touring, bringing back Bruce Johnston, and David Marks. Since that time in the late 1990s, many fans have had an issue with Mike going on the road as The Beach Boys, especially with not one Wilson brother in the band. What many people don't realize though, is the fact that every time Mike tours he has to pay money from the revenue, (17% total,) to Al, Carl's estate, and Brian who makes out the best of all, because all the money he makes on his own doesn't have to be paid to anyone, (other than musicians and touring costs.) With Mike keeping his version of the band on the road, this has made substantial money for not only Brian, and Al, but also for Carl's estate. So even if as fans we complain about it, the fact is Brian, Al, and especially Carl's estate want Mike to stay out in the road as long as he can, because once it ends they will all lose hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. Just something to think about next time you think Mike Love is a greedy opportunist milking The Beach Boys name.

Yeah as if Brian cared THAT much about Mike Love's opinion that he would shelve his greatest work for 37 years based on one comment alone. Mike's criticism didn't help, but Brian was addicted to drugs and having a mental breakdown regardless of what the other Beach Boys said.
Personally, I don't think it's the Beach Boys unless both Brian and Al are on stage with Mike and Bruce. But Mike does have the legal right to use the Beach Boys name, and Brian, Al and Carl's estate are paid from each current Beach Boys concert, even though they aren't physically participating in the concerts. There's a hope that next year for their 60th anniversary, Brian Mike, Al, Bruce and David will reunite once again for concerts and possibly a new studio album. Hope this happens!
I think Mike Love is an insecure, defensive egoist. But credit where it's due: I'd say that for a long time, Love was the lead singer. He does have the distinctive voice in many songs too. And when Love said "even the happy songs are sad" he did have a point. What Love couldn't see past was that the band had to reinvent itself, as they were becoming less and less successful. Brian Wilson was working to change that and it seems Love was in favor of keeping the formula. In 1966, it seems absurd to think that Mike Love could look at the pop music landscape and think the Beach Boys were capturing fans' imaginations like they could in 1963. But at the same time, Love was also calculating and opportunist when it came to other members of the group too, particularly later on like when he fired Al. I can see how Brian was and is pissed off about Love. Sometimes it seems like Jardine was more family than Love was.
I am a great Beach Boys fan, I grew up listening to them, Brian, and Mike need to settle there differences and get back to what is important, playing Beach Boys music...
Mike has ALWAYS wanted to play--he's the one who has been behind ALL the tours, he is the vocalist who is most recognized due to his persistent performance. many just dislike his perceived personality--they believe all the rumors, innuendo.
In Brian Wilson's interview on Larry King, he implicitly states that the Wilson family (or company they own) sold the rights to the Beach Boys name to Mike Love. Whether or not you are in the Brian Wilson camp or Mike Love camp, you can't hold it against Love for touring as the Beach Boys when it was the Wilsons themselves that sold the name to him.
The license is used by The Touring Band with conditions precedent. This is misleading information. There is a Larry King interview from about 20 years ago that dispels this one. Most of what is here is not accurate. The board members awarded Mike with the license since he fulfilled the conditions the board required and they get money from Mike touring. So long as he meets the conditions he can tour. The reunion was a separate entity created for the tour and had nothing to do with the license. It was a special event.

Brian was the a big force during the first 5 or 6 years of the band but after that he spent most of his time debilitated because of drug abuse and mental illness. Mike’s lyrics made Brian’s eccentricity marketable in the early days. And he kept the band going through all the massive problems the Wilson Brothers had. The Wilson’s were messed up, unpractical people. Through most of the BB’s touring years Brian wasn’t there. So how can you say, it isn’t a concert without Brian. He hardly toured with them and the other brothers are now dead. It’s got to be hard hitching your career into a “genius” that’s unstable.
A judge ruled that Mike Love has a right to use the name... do I agree with all rulings from judges? No, although it is what it is and I like the fact that Mike Love played for and supported President Trump and am very disappointed in Brian Wilson on that note, but whatever... Brian Wilson is beyond genius and I respect him a great deal for what he and the rest gave us in their music.

Brian Wilson is my hero! That said, if Mike Love wants to carry on the Beach Boys, I think that's fine. Still, I imagine it might make BW feel sad and hurt his feelings, because he loved his brothers, and his relationship with them, so very much. But BW has so much amazing work of his own going on, to me it seems like a natural progression. Sure the Beach Boys wouldn't be TBB without BW. That's a given. They wouldn't have existed without him. But ML was a critical member of TBB too. Go Brian Wilson!

This is where youre wrong. Getting older isnt always a self evufent virtue. Also, the Beach Boys stayed together for too long. They shouldve went into solo careers.
By now the entire sun' n' surf thing is nostalgia-becoming-history, and all "surf music" played live is by way of tributes like the Beach Boys and "ghost bands" like The Ventures and The Glenn Miller Orchestra. Anyone performing it therefore is required to get it as period-correct as possible, without obvious anachronism. Mike's Beach Boys do a reasonably good job, but I'm sorry to say Brian Wilson is so damaged by his excesses he has to be led onstage with a walker, and can't sing more than a few words without drifting into incoherent mumbling. There has to be a soundalike singer onstage with him to pick up the vocals instantly and often. A cringeworthy embarrassment, with no dignity whatever.

And a further funny thing is that the essential "surf sound" was invented by The Fireballs, who never got on the surf bandwagon (or is that "woody wagon?) and who went pop-rock later on with singer Jimmy Gilmer. But that entire muted-Strat-mixed-clean thing was first done by Fireballs lead guitarist George Tomsco.
I think their promo posters should read. "THE BAND THATS LEGALLY ALLOWED TO CALL THEMSELVES THE BEACH BOYS" The Love Johnston concerts really aren't bad but they simply arent the Beach Boys. The blends are far inferior and both Loves and Johnstons voices are failing. I really Love Brian but it we're honest with ourselves, he should have stopped touring years ago. The last 2 shows I saw were embarrasments. Not the band but Brians performance. They were pitiful. So glad I got to see the Pet Sounds 1st tour and Smile. Those were amazing shows !!!! But after that things just went to hell.

Al Jardine is my favorite of the bunch.

The Beach Boys is the only band I know of to have a "villain" and unfortunately have that villain win.
They called it Pet Sounds because Mike Love said that Brian’s songs & recordings were like his “pet sounds”
Amazing, You never know anyone until you live with them, and sometimes not. I have most all of the original 45 RPM records including Good Vibrations. Great songs. My favorite is Don't worry Baby. I have the 1965 Beach Boys Christmas Album which my sister bought new for my birthday in 1965.
Brian is definitely not "livid" about Mike Love using the Beach Boys name....Brian knows his name alone will sell more tickets by himself than Mike Love's Beach Boys would. Also he gets a nice paycheck on royalties or back ends...any my point is that I HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt that Brian even gives a shit about Mike keeping the name...it's such a common tale...a band breaks up, one of them tours as a solo act playing the songs they wrote in their former bands...then there's the other band member who keeps the name and almost always has a new roster if not the only original member and those kinda bands are always worse than the solo artist who broke off from said band

Not exactly accurate. I've seen many comments on different posts talking about Mike Love owning The Beach Boys’ name. Actually, he doesn't own it. The company formed by the band "Brother Records Incorporated", which is owned equally by Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, and the estate of Carl Wilson, own The Beach Boys name, and trademark. (Dennis Wilson's share was bought out by the other four after his death to pay outstanding debts left behind.) However, since Al Jardine once quit the band, and was a salary employee when he came back in the early 1960s, even though he owns the name equally with Brian, and Mike he's not allowed to use The Beach Boys likeness himself, if Brian or Mike is using it at the same time. Also Mike and Al had begun a pretty bad fued over Al wanting to do some symphonic shows using The Beach Boys name in Carl's very last days. Mike vowed not to include him in his band because of that. Only Brian Wilson, and Mike Love can tour together, or separately under "The Beach Boys" name, not at the same time though. Once Carl died Brian had already begun to establish himself as a profitable touring act on his own. So it was decided (by majority vote, Brian and Carl's estate voted yes, Al voted no, and would sue Mike to be able to use the name himself but would lose the lawsuit,) that Mike would use the trademark Beach Boys name to continue touring, bringing back Bruce Johnston, and David Marks.
Since that time in the late 1990s, many fans have had an issue with Mike going on the road as The Beach Boys, especially with not one Wilson brother in the band. What many people don't realize though, is the fact that every time Mike tours he has to pay money from the revenue, (17% total,) to Al, Carl's estate, and Brian who makes out the best of all, because all the money he makes on his own doesn't have to be paid to anyone, (other than musicians and touring costs.) With Mike keeping his version of the band on the road, this has made substantial money for not only Brian, and Al, but also for Carl's estate. So even if as fans we complain about it, the fact is Brian, Al, and especially Carl's estate want Mike to stay out in the road as long as he can, because once it ends they will all lose hundreds of thousands of dollars per year. Just something to think about next time you think Mike Love is a greedy opportunist milking The Beach Boys name.

Yeah as if Brian cared THAT much about Mike Love's opinion that he would shelve his greatest work for 37 years based on one comment alone. Mike's criticism didn't help, but Brian was addicted to drugs and having a mental breakdown regardless of what the other Beach Boys said.

Personally, I don't think it's the Beach Boys unless both Brian and Al are on stage with Mike and Bruce. But Mike does have the legal right to use the Beach Boys name, and Brian, Al and Carl's estate are paid from each current Beach Boys concert, even though they aren't physically participating in the concerts. There's a hope that next year for their 60th anniversary, Brian Mike, Al, Bruce and David will reunite once again for concerts and possibly a new studio album. Hope this happens!

I think Mike Love is an insecure, defensive egoist. But credit where it's due: I'd say that for a long time, Love was the lead singer. He does have the distinctive voice in many songs too. And when Love said "even the happy songs are sad" he did have a point. What Love couldn't see past was that the band had to reinvent itself, as they were becoming less and less successful. Brian Wilson was working to change that and it seems Love was in favor of keeping the formula. In 1966, it seems absurd to think that Mike Love could look at the pop music landscape and think the Beach Boys were capturing fans' imaginations like they could in 1963. But at the same time, Love was also calculating and opportunist when it came to other members of the group too, particularly later on like when he fired Al. I can see how Brian was and is pissed off about Love. Sometimes it seems like Jardine was more family than Love was.
Mike Love's ego is almost as huge as Brian Wilson's genius.

I've heard Mike Love's solo albums. None of the genius is there.
In Brian Wilson's interview on Larry King, he implicitly states that the Wilson family (or company they own) sold the rights to the Beach Boys name to Mike Love. Whether or not you are in the Brian Wilson camp or Mike Love camp, you can't hold it against Love for touring as the Beach Boys when it was the Wilsons themselves that sold the name to him.
The license is used by The Touring Band with conditions precedent. This is misleading information. There is a Larry King interview from about 20 years ago that dispels this one. Most of what is here is not accurate. The board members awarded Mike with the license since he fulfilled the conditions the board required and they get money from Mike touring. So long as he meets the conditions he can tour. The reunion was a separate entity created for the tour and had nothing to do with the license. It was a special event.

This video also missed out how Murry Wilson screwed the band over by selling their catalog out from under them for far less than it was worth.

Everybody that keeps saying Brian Brian Brian….give it a rest. Brian was the a big force during the first 5 or 6 years of the band but after that he spent most of his time debilitated because of drug abuse and mental illness.
Mike’s lyrics made Brian’s eccentricity marketable in the early days. And he kept the band going through all the massive problems the Wilson Brothers had. The Wilson’s were messed up, unpractical people. Through most of the BB’s touring years Brian wasn’t there. So how can you say, it isn’t a concert without Brian. He hardly toured with them and the other brothers are now dead.
It’s got to be hard hitching your career into a “genius” that’s unstable.

Not long after the Beach Boys made it big, an interviewer asked Mike Love about Brian Wilson. Love said, "Brian Wilson IS the Beach Boys." Many of us didn't know that at the time, but Mike Love was being honest. Brian WAS the Beach Boys. Take away Brian Wilson and there never would have been a 'Beach Boys' band. Take away Mike Love and you have a void that could have been filled by any number of singers. Glenn Campbell was a touring member of the Beach Boys in 1964-'65.

Brian Wilson is my hero! That said, if Mike Love wants to carry on the Beach Boys, I think that's fine. Still, I imagine it might make BW feel sad and hurt his feelings, because he loved his brothers, and his relationship with them, so very much. But BW has so much amazing work of his own going on, to me it seems like a natural progression. Sure the Beach Boys wouldn't be TBB without BW. That's a given. They wouldn't have existed without him. But ML was a critical member of TBB too. Go Brian Wilson!

Also, the Beach Boys stayed together for too long. They shouldve went into solo careers.
By now the entire sun' n' surf thing is nostalgia-becoming-history, and all "surf music" played live is by way of tributes like the Beach Boys and "ghost bands" like The Ventures and The Glenn Miller Orchestra. Anyone performing it therefore is required to get it as period-correct as possible, without obvious anachronism. Mike's Beach Boys do a reasonably good job, but I'm sorry to say Brian Wilson is so damaged by his excesses he has to be led onstage with a walker, and can't sing more than a few words without drifting into incoherent mumbling. There has to be a soundalike singer onstage with him to pick up the vocals instantly and often.

Funny thing is the Beach Boys didnt even do surf music for long. They were more doo wop with rock n roll tha actual surf rock music.

And a further funny thing is that the essential "surf sound" was invented by The Fireballs, who never got on the surf bandwagon (or is that "woody wagon?) and who went pop-rock later on with singer Jimmy Gilmer. But that entire muted-Strat-mixed-clean thing was first done by Fireballs lead guitarist George Tomsco.

I think their promo posters should read. "THE BAND THATS LEGALLY ALLOWED TO CALL THEMSELVES THE BEACH BOYS" The Love Johnston concerts really aren't bad but they simply arent the Beach Boys. The blends are far inferior and both Loves and Johnstons voices are failing. I really Love Brian but it we're honest with ourselves, he should have stopped touring years ago. The last 2 shows I saw were embarrasments. Not the band but Brians performance. They were pitiful. So glad I got to see the Pet Sounds 1st tour and Smile. Those were amazing shows !!!! But after that things just went to hell.
