New Officiant here! Need some advice as to when do you have the couple and witnesses SIGN the marriage license. Also, do you have a marriage certificate there as well that the couple will take home with them. Where you are from, who returns the license back to the county clerk’s office, the couple or the minister?
Hey Anita, not all jurisdiction require the couple to sign at the ceremony - some states/counties have the couple sign at the courthouse when they pick up the license. But assuming they have to sign it at the wedding, I try to do it immediately after the ceremony. Things can get a little hectic with photos, cake, dances, etc. So there's a magical moment just seconds/minutes after the kiss where you can round the couple up. Be tough, be assertive and get it done otherwise you might be stuck listening to a rambling, 30-minute best man speech. :) I almost always return the license back to the clerk's office as part of the service I provide my clients. 2 reasons: 1.) The clients love not having to go back to the clerk's office and will therefore love you more. 2.) I get to show my face at the office - you might get referrals from the clerks on occasion.
