Anybody who was fortunate enough to grow up during the 70's will remember the glam era and no band showcased those times more than The Sweet. Brian as a frontman and vocalist will remain for us lucky ones as the charesmatic front man with the awesome voice and personality who propelled the band to massive sucess worldwide. HE WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

I met Brian a few times. Contrary to what some people said about him I found him to be an extremely nice man. Sadly years of substance and alcohol abuse took its toll on him not to mention he was subject to a very vicious beating at the height of his career. The Sweets talent for hard Rock vocal harmonies were every bit as good as Queen and their music style actually predates Mercury's mob.
Some of their album tracks verge on metal. Brian was a class act as a singer and a front man. For those of us who know their rock music Brian is a legend.

Hi Fus about your knowledge and it was wonderful that you met Brian. I've had comparisons between Queen and Sweet for me, they're the 70s at its best and Brian himself. He had the looks, the style and the voice. He was the package. I don't know why it couldn't. Just embrace it I'm I'm going to see if I can buy a biography to fill in the gaps. Thank you, Alan

@@MotorHomeBeepBeep My ex is one of the biggest Sweet fans in the world and knew them all. I'm mad on Slade so we made a good pair. I met Brian through her and Mick and Andy too although not in the same company as Brian. Steve I never met as he had long ago moved to the States. I remember Brian had just finished playing the old Marquee Club in Soho and we were chatting backstage. He was genial and friendly after a good gig when someone mentioned Andy Scott....
Suddenly his old scottish accent came out
"Dinae ye tak te me about that f***ing £%_^%£%%££^%£%*&£# Scott!
Their music was brilliant. Really good hard rock songs that more modern bands cover regularly.
You can hear the influence Brian and the boys had on other bands, you can hear Sweet in Queen, Def Leppard, even Iron Maiden and Priest! All my treasured LP's are signed. When Brian asked me who's my favourite band and I sheepishly said Slade, the next time I saw him he gave me a stack of his own newspaper cuttings about them!
One other point. I'm of the same generation as you and our musical heroes if they are still here are getting on. Brian was obviously frail and his handsome looks had long left him and so had his voice. I remember someone asked him "Isn't it about time you packed it in?" He said "And do what? I've done this since I was a kid what could I do work in an office?"
It's the same for Dave Hill and Don Powell, Les Gray, Alvin Stardust, Suzy Q, its in the blood. They are and were one offs not something off a Stock Aitkin Waterman or Cowell production line they had genuine talent and Brian was one of the best.
      Cheers mate. 👍

When I was a teenager I thought Brian had it all going on ❤️ Bless him, I think jealousy reared it's evil head when he was attacked at the prime of his career 😔

    • @fus149hammer5
      @fus149hammer5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@@elainebines6803 There is some suspicion that his attack was planned. The band was desperate to get away from their contract with Chinn and Chapman. They were frustrated that the songs written for them didn't reflect the true hard rock the band wanted to play. Of course they enjoyed the trappings of success but they wanted total control of their musical output. Chinn and Chapman wrote the hits but allowed the band to write the B sides which is why they were of a much heavier style of rock and to a lot of people much better songs.
Songs like Tiger Feet were originally offered to Sweet but they put their foot down and refused to record it therefore it was offered to Mud. Of course it became a massive hit for them. It's such a shame only Andy Scott is still around. Mick a marvellous drummer died of leukaemia and Steve died in 2020. His last years were particularly sad. Still living and playing in the US until his death he had became so overweight at his last shows he played sitting down backed by a band made up of kids who were barely old enough to be his grandchildren but the band was still called The Sweet.
As I said in a previous comment what else could he do? He like the rest of the band were musicians from their teens. How could they do a nine to five job that late in life?

Thank you for your great warm tribute to a man who gave so much light, but sank away in darkness. His memory and light will prevail over that darkness forever.
Hearing Ball room Blitz for the first time as an 11 year old musician?
Are you kidding me?! I was instantly in the same ballroom with them ( every time ) I heard that song. And Steves magical, under rated and diverse sounding voice, was from deep space.
The guitar tones? The voice? The phrasing? The atmosphere?
It was/ is still out of this world.
That song still rocks me to my bones,
at very high volume, 50 years later !! Not many songs have that effect on me. The Sweet were not properly credited for their creativity and song quality, although some of their songs are hard to absorb, because The Sweet were in a different time dimension, than we mear mortals were, and it was 1974 here on Earth. Lol They were sent here with a prominent purpose, and fulfilled it beyond our imagination.
Its unfortunate for me to remember Steves last days as being challengining ones, ( because I'm sure they were ), but having never net him, I was able to remember him, perhaps like he wished for his fans.
As one of the very first and real rock stars on the planet.
And look how much light and energy still shines through, long after his departure.

I'm 66 years old and spent much of my teens with the likes of The Sweet, T Rex, Roxy Music Suzy Quatro and let's not forget the super group ABBA and others and consider myself very fortunate to have done so. I have CDs of all of them but mainly listen via Amazon Unlimited with many tracks being available in Ultra HD. It's the kind of stuff one doesn't tire of. Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, who wrote many hit tunes for these guys were the masters of British pop in the 70s . Better by far than Stock Aitkin and Waterman who followed in the 80s and who had a much more generic sound. Today there are some talented artists around but few, I'd say, that equal the skills of our old favorites who simply did not have the technology to cover their flaws either on disc or on stage. What you saw (and heard) was what you got. Bless them all. My life is so much richer for them.

Stumbled across your video today, loved it, absolutely brilliant. It brought back a lot of memories of my love of the Sweet when i first started out listening to music. I come from Burbank in Hamilton, just a mile from Blantyre where Brian Connelly was brought up. Our next door neighbour at the time had connections with Brian, I'm sure he was our next door neighbours cousin's foster son, he was related in some way i know that. Anyway when our neighbour realised i was into the Sweet, she had a drawing that I'd done of him signed... it was signed, BEST OF LUCK JAMES, LOVE BRIAN. He used to visit his foster parents every now and again in Blantyre, but i was never lucky enough to meet him. Sad that he was one of giants of glam rock but is only remembered by a little plaque. But he achieved his goal, sad it ended the way it did.

I was lucky enough to attend a concert by Sweet in the early 1980s at a local holiday park. The 18+ organisation had booked him and his band. He was at the bar drinking 'Snakebite'. When the Band went on, he was still at the bar, as the drummer played the introduction to Ballroom Blitz, which went on and on as he was still at the bar. He finally appeared and did a faultless set. Took me a week to get my hearing back, but it was worth it. RIP Brian, you were a total star. To the channel, thanks. Excellent video.

When I was a kid I remember me and my brothers watching Top of the Pops, and loving it when they had Sweet on, alongside others such as, Slade, T. Rex, David Bowie, Suzie Quatro, etc. Those were the days! Great music from real talented musicians and singers. I remember after watching them on the TV me and my brothers would go upstairs to the bedroom. Stick on Ballroom Blitz, or Blockbuster, and all the other hits from the time, and think we were them! 😁 We'd vision ourselves as whoever we were copying. Sweet, T. Rex, etc. Dreams of the young and innocent. Great days....Great video! Thank you! 👍

Nice tribute Alan. Brian and Sweet were my heroes as a kid in the 70's and cultivated my taste for rock music. I was lucky to meet Brian once in the late 80's when his Sweet band played Wolverhampton. It was a shame to see his health so affected but he was still getting out there and performing I'd had a few beers when he came into the bar and I got a hug and a signed beer mat from the great man. I got introduced to Brian, back in 1994, when he came down to meet a work friend of mine, for lunch at tower records in Kensington, where we worked . It was quite sad really, when he was introduced to me, he could hardly walk, and had the shakes, but he still made the effort to say hello to me, and shake my hand, even though he didn't know me,and we had not met before, I was just a friend of his friend.
But I treasure the memory of meeting the lead singer of the sweet.

That was a great presentation to Brian, and I’m so sorry to only now learn of all his misfortune and health issues..,my God, 7 heart attacks and to survive them….that was amazing, but I’m really sad he felt so unloved! If only his fans could have met and shown him how much THEY/We Loved him! But it’s the love of a family he must have meant from his very early days that’s the worst of it bless him.
I and my husband loved Sweet, and hadn’t been married long when they released “ Blockbuster “. My husband was a herdsman, having to get up so early to milk the cows on a cold dark morning wasn’t easy as we both slept deeply, so we attached a peice of string to the clocks alarm key, the other end to our record player with blockbuster ready to drop. If we didn’t wake, the alarm key would start winding in the string, the record arm would drop, and anyone who remembers Blockbuster knows it starts with like police sirens going off!….we had it turned up a bit but also having elderly neighbours used to make us BOTH leap out of bed to turn it off! Lol….but it was a cracking record, abd helped us enormously in those early days!! Thankyou Brian and the Sweet"…Rest in Peace, but know you ARE LOVED! Godbless 🙏🙋‍♀️💕😘😘😘🥰. Thankyou motor home….you did well finding and sharing with us. Happy memories of a great band! 👏🏻👏🏻
