  • In this video I begin work on the fruit bowl I have been commissioned to make. I mill the Maple, Sapele and Padauk into strips and then cut them into segments using my bandsaw.
Once all 160 segments are cut I glue them into rings and finally glue the rings together into a bowl blank.
I hope you've enjoyed this video and found it instructive. Thanks to all my Subscribers for your continued support. Please like and share this video and my channel to help my channel grow.

Nathan, just to be clear, the SEL (segment edge length) is the measurement of the segment that goes to the outside of the bowl? The wider piece of the segment?Thank you, and great job.Time for me to subscribe :-)

Alex Mack that’s right, the SEL is the long length of the segment once the angles have been cut. It determines the outer diameter of the ring when glued. Thank you for your subscription. I’m currently redecorating my house so haven’t been working on projects recently but will be back at it soon for more segmented turning.

Those sounds during the sped up parts are great.

it was quite a long process at the end so I put some music on, makes for an interesting soundtrack when sped up.

thank you Sean, most of them I got from work and I just use two together to make a big ring. Amazon also sells them in a variety of sizes. (4" - 12")

can you tell me how you set up your segment degree angle of cut please.

Take the number of segments that you want to use. Divide 360 by that number and then divide by 2 to get both sides

Do you have a video on your press? Looks interesting. Thanks.

I don't, but Frank Howarth has a video showing how to make one. Mine is a much simpler version inspired by his. Works just as well though, I'll show a close up of it in the next video of the finished bowl. Thanks for watching.

Nice work. How long did it take you to mill, cut the segments, and put together the rings? Did you sand the rings before you glued them? Thanks Bill

I didn't realize you had less than 1,000 subscribers. Your talent is in the ranges of men like Mike Waldt, so it won't be long before you get more recognition. Keep up the great work. Can't wait to see how that bowl turns out!

Thank you very much Jeff, that means a lot. I don't quite know how to really increase my footprint on TH-cam but it could be as simple as time and commitment to creating content. Won't be long and it will be finished, thanks for watching.

Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have helped increase exposure for many youtubers. Not sure if you use those other platforms, but they can be worth a shot if not. Time will be the biggest factor for you. Just keep the content coming and more people will come. You will get there one day! PS: If you want to try something new, see if you can get your hands on Eastern Red Cedar. You would absolutely love it!

I've never used Twitter and rarely use Instagram, I have been thinking of making an Instagram account to link to TH-cam though. Eastern Red Cedar is now on my list of woods to find and turn, I've turned Brazilian Cedar and it was divine. My garage smelled so nice for days after that.

Never turned Brazilian Cedar. I'll have to look for it. Red Cedar will also leave your shop smelling great. A lot of people make furniture with it and leave it unfinished because the scent. Just wear a respirator while sanding it. The dust can give you some allergy trouble if you breath it. Once it settles you're good! Over here it grows in most people's yards. So, if you have some trouble finding it, I might can send you a 12"-16" round blank of it later in the year

Just noticed I never replied to this. I've been lucky so far to not suffer a bad reaction to anything I've turned, fingers crossed that doesn't change. Hay fever in the summer is bad enough. I certainly wouldn't say no to a spare piece of Red Cedar if it came my way, I'd dedicate the turning to you too of course.
