Love a good redemption arc! We have done this at my office, only issue is that most 27" displays will also power laptops -- this only provides video, but it's quite a savings over what Apple is currently charging for the same panel.
Completely agree. I have a dock that I purchased long ago, so 1 extra cable is all I need for this display. But figuring out a way to get both via 1 cable would be really nice, and using the keyboard to adjust brightness
I don't know if I could find a shop that could acquire the part, and on top of that do the soldering required to fix it. At this point I was just trying to cut my losses and move on. When it is all said and done I should only lose a few hundred bucks (which is the likely cost of the repair)
I just did this exact project in January! I bought a unit with a toast motherboard for cheap and I struggled with the power adapter too. I ended up just cutting out the fan slits and ran the cables through there 😅 I set it up next to my working iMac Pro and the dual setup looks super clean 😎

I almost bought one, but then the 2020 iMac top end model just blows away the performance of the 2017 iMac Pro's internals, so I got the high-end 2020 one with the RX 5700XT GPU. BUT instead of panting is, much easier is getting a roll of gray cellophane tape and putting it on the chin portion. The back will still be aluminum, but from the front, mine looks almost identical to an iMac Pro.
I thought I was the only one who had a iMac pro. I just bought a Mac Studio M2 max and I will be using Luna Display to use my iMac Pro as my main 5K screen. If it were to break I will do what you did in the video. Awesome work !! Thanks
Very good video, I liked it! I did the same thing with a 2015 iMac. Here are a few things that might be interesting: 1. You should attach weights to the inside of the case so that you can adjust the tilt. The iMac only stays in one position because it is so light. 2. If you used the same video board as I did, you have NO 5K via an HDMI or DisplayPort connection. You can get 5K in the settings by using a Display Port splitter. 3. Nobody does a conversion on an iMac Pro because the purchase costs are too high, as you already mentioned. Definitely get a 2015 or 2017 iMac, they have 5K and you can get them for around €300. From my understanding, if his conversion board has DP 1.4 and he is using a MacBook Pro M1 pro or newer he is able to get 5k from a display port to thunderbolt usb-C cable without any splitter. Am I wrong?

I did this with an iMac pro about 5 years ago so you definitely aren't the 1st. I feel your pain with the power connector. I also slapped a vesa mount on the back which I highly recommend ;)
@@techno_eclipse Also another great little trick I used is to purchase a USB-c to display port cable with a USB-C power delivery port on the side. You plug the macbook charger into the side of it and then you truly have a 1 cable setup.

This is really interesting. I have a Mac Studio that I connected to a $400 plastic 4K monitor. I also have a 8ish year old 27” iMac with one of those gorgeous screens. Eventually, I bought a Studio display, but if I knew there was a way to make that iMac a functional display, I definitely would have considered that route. I don’t really need the extra ports on the monitor or the speakers. I’m sorry your iMac Pro project didn’t work as you’d hoped, but this was a cool project.
We have several 2017's laying around doing nothing and I am DYING to use them as a second reference monitor. Would DIY it as long as it's the same display resolution pre tearing it apart. Saving vid. Subbed. Thnx
I thought this would be a great plan and got a 2015 27" 5k imac. What I didn't count on is backlight bleed. There's a pink fringe around the edges of the imac display. Make sure you view the screen with an all-white background if you are getting one for this purpose. Its still mostly nice display and darker colours around the edge make it less obvious, but I'm not sure its worth the cost of the electronics upgrade and might just end up as a 27" mac mini or linux workstation.
i hope after this video with terrible tips, your marrige is broken. For 1000€ you can build Windows PC with display, mouse, keyboard and PC itself with good specs. Very bad advice from you. Do not buy Apple. Money waste. Thanks for your appinion.
“With good specs.” LOL. You clearly have different standards of what is “good.” Very few monitors can rival this 5K setup. That’s why they are expensive. Go back to your games, while we will continue doing real work.

i always wanted to do this, i am probably going to get like a 21.5 inch retina from 2014 and retrofit that to become a studio display

Can you still use the brightness button on your keyboard? And the auto brightness function that the iMac has?
You can even get the speakers to run easily. I did it with mine :)
