Their "IFIXIT Australia PTY LTD" ABN was registered back in 2012. They are trading as the business "Juicy Crumb Systems" as of August 2021. Maybe it's some sort of inside joke and they registered the company name prior to the American "iFixit" company having a presence here in Australia.

Alas, it’s not affordable. They’re asking US$249 for the *cheapest* board.

I don't think they can. Controller boards for display panels have been sold for years now. There's a wealth of TH-cam content around repurposing displays from otherwise damaged laptop and turning them into external monitors. In the Apple camp, Luke Miani did something similar with an iMac, turning it into a 4k display some months ago, so I guess there is no problem.

    @TimurTripp2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

This is amazing. I'd like to see a version for the iMac 5K as it can save people (myself included) so much money vs. buying a new Studio Display! The panel in our aging iMacs is still nearly as good as Apple's $1,600 display and it frustrates me so much that it can't be used as a standalone display, especially now with Apple's attempt to discontinue MacOS support for early models of iMac 5K. Unlike the 2011 it may not be a standard DisplayPort connector inside which is a problem though, at the time the DisplayPort standard couldn't handle 5K. I believe they got around this by using 2x DisplayPorts for the one display but I could be wrong.

This is a prototype. The current board which you will see in another video shortly is all on board. This is a proof of concept only to prove that it works. All of the boards shown in the video have already been re-designed and included in the board. The shipping boards will not simply be a bunch of cheap parts glued to PCB - So please throw in a dollar and support the project =)

It’s a very good up cycle.
The need to make some sort of brightness knob for the newer Apple cinema displays as they can no longer have their brightness adjusted due to it being in the os and that being removed.

Apple knew what to do with monitors...we need more with this exact design!! One piece of front glass over a screen with large bezels. Everyone thinks they want smaller bezels...this is so wrong!!! The bezel and smooth front glass are absolutely beautiful.

I have a 27 inch 2009 imac that has 32 G of ram and a 512 SATA drive. It works wonderfully, other than how it fries my external drives so I can't edit photos. Also can't upgrade OS so I can't upgrade Adobe programs. Of course XD The computer experts locally said it sounds like a power supply issue and isn't worth fixing, but having paid to upgrade this already I'm possibly in denial that this is the end of the road. You said you installed an M1 in your 2011 computer. Do you think I could do something similar with this? Thanks for the video! I am interested in learning how to work on these myself.

It's sad that it will probably take the EU to mandate that companies no longer let all in one computers be manufactured without the capability to be used as a stand alone monitor. Typical Apple. As much as I love their products their throw away attitude leaves a lot to be desired.

Edit: too expensive. $250 USD just to prevent e-waste sadly isn't worth it. Plus it'll probably be more expensive once you can just buy them.
I don't think it's viable but I really wish there was an option to steal one thunderbolt port but still allow the iMac to function as normal.
The rubber grommets from the HDD mount could be used to lift the board higher.

3:03 No wonder why the GPU on that motherboard is failing!
The GPU's heatsink is poorly designed and the heatsink fins are too far away, so heat build up is a given.
The cooling fan on the GPU is also poorly optimized as the air from it has to go under (or through...) the DVD drive before it reaches the heatsink fins.
Overall, a terrible GPU cooling design and it's no wonder why the GPU was failing.

$386USD-$588USD for this board? The idea is very good, but for this price range there are very well calibrated monitors out there. I think the pirated/clone boards will start emerging pretty soon at a reasonable price.

it's a cool idea but the price makes it a non-starter for me. like $400 (canadian) by the time it gets in my hands. that gets me a pretty nice monitor that's higher res than 1440p.

I can't bear to toss this beautiful monitor, but your mod costs more than a brand new monitor. I hope you can make it around $150 in volume because there are so many of these old computers lying around.

seems interesting, but it s not.
The kit costs like a new better monitor + the broken imac can be sold and has a value higher than a new 1440p screen + cables are ugly + + + and the most important thing : you can replace the broken gpu with another (or repair it for cheap)
